Natural Disaster Counselling

Review a professional resource ( peer-reviewed journal or text) on counseling following a Natural Disaster.

The review must provide the following (hummm…these look like headings in a paper to me; hint, hint):

  1. Source reference in APA 7th reference style,

1b. Citations as necessary (this is only an issue if you reference other’s article information in your summary, otherwise it is assumed that the summary is strictly dealing with the single article / text referenced). Summarize the article well,

  1. Note strengths and weaknesses of the article,
  2. and the Benefit / Negative (pro/con) to the student as a counseling professional. There is no page limit. Cover all of the required points well / thoroughly and all will go well.

I prefer if you can do so with efficiency and brevity, perhaps even eloquence. But I have no minimum or maximum limit of pages (that is an archaic structure that limits self-expression).

Upload a document of your summary in .doc or .docx format

As we are using TurnItIn to combat AI and plagiarism, you are recommended to turn in your paper early, return to the assignment after TurnItIn has reviewed your submission, and then use the TurnItin analysis to improve your paper.

Part: 2 (

Select one of the websites listed at the end of Chapter 1 and review it for the group: (1) Give the correct web address (especially if the link in the book is out of date); (2) Describe any helpful resources on the site; (3) Strengths & Weaknesses of the site; and(4) your overall impression/reaction to the site (10 pts). ) ~~Respond to 2 other classmates’ postings for full credit. Response credit follows Discussion rubric available on Canvas. Remember: 1) The discussion deadline for all initial discussion posts and response posts is 11:59p CT on the Sunday that marks the end of each class week (see syllabus for discussion deadlines). 2) You must respond meaningfully (no simple “I agree” replies) to 2 classmates for full credit on discussion posts (6 pts for the original post, 2 pt each for each response to the discussions.

Natural Disaster Counselling

Remember:

1) The discussion deadline for all initial discussion posts and response posts is 11:59p CT on the Sunday that marks the end of each class week (see syllabus for discussion deadlines).

2) You must respond meaningfully (no simple “I agree” replies) to 2 classmates for full credit on discussion posts (6 pts for the original post 2 pt each for each response to the  discussions).,

3) Also remember that the Rubric for Online Discussion Posting (in the Files section of this course) deducts points for discussion or response postings late in the timeline for the week’s discussion assignment as last day/last hour postings restrict other student’s opportunity to read and respond to your posting or to read your responses to their postings., As discussions are most beneficial when the discussants are able to interact in the discussion I am using the Discussion Rubric to engender a greater opportunity for them to do so., So please be aware that posting within 12 hours of the discussion deadline will deduct 33% of the available points and posting within 4 hours of the deadline will cost from 66%-90% of the available points.,

4) No discussion or response points will be gained if the discussion post, or the response posts are after the discussion deadline.,

  1. Helpful Resources:
The American Counseling Association (ACA) website is a great resource for anyone who is either pursuing a career in counseling, looking for counseling, or both (as counselors reach out for support too as a part of selfcare). One of its key features is a searchable database that allows users to find counselors in their area, with options for in-person or online sessions. Users can even filter their search by insurance provider, which is half the battle. There is an option to become a member, which comes with some great discounts and perks.  The membership is set up on a tier, so you’re only paying for what you need – whether you’re a student or a professional.  The website also has links to other publications where you can find the latest news, journals, articles, and updates; although some of these are only available through the membership The ACA website also provides opportunities for continuing education, offering online courses that provide credits for counselors. These courses are available to both members and non-members, making it easy for professionals to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

The American Counseling Association (ACA) website is user-friendly, making it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. A helpful feature is the frequently asked questions section, which provides guidance if you’re unsure about what you need. Initially, I was skeptical about the membership requirement, concerned that it might be another expensive subscription. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the membership prices are very affordable, ranging from $105 to $189 annually, depending on your needs.
One potential area for improvement might be the addition of a community events search feature, allowing users to find local health and wellness events by zip code. While the website does have an events section, it is primarily focused on ACA-specific events.

Overall Impression/Reaction:
What I appreciate most about the American Counseling Association (ACA) website is its accessibility. Not only is membership affordably priced, but also, the website’s valuable resources, educational materials, and information are available to everyone, regardless of membership status. Its extensive list of resources covers a wide range of topics related to counseling and mental health, making it a useful tool for anyone looking to learn more about these subjects.

I liked the site because it offers a tremendous amount of information on the history of the organization, its mission statement, how it aids others who are suicidal, and the training that people can acquire. There are a lot of resources on suicidal loss, prevention, help for the military, schools, autism, and a 988 overview.

Lastly, it assists in getting crisis training and specialization along with how to respond to a suicide or crisis risk. The more information and training one can acquire, the better we become as counselors.
