Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle and Willa Cather’s Neighbour Rosicky present two such characters. Rip Van Winkle, a man living in pre- and post-Revolutionary America, and Anton Rosicky, an immigrant farmer in Nebraska, appear vastly different at first glance—Rip is idle and escapist; Rosicky is responsible and kind. However, upon deeper exploration, they reveal striking similarities. Both men are defined by their relationships with others, driven by a desire for freedom and simplicity, and shaped by the challenges life presents. Through their connections with others, their underlying adventurousness, and the trials they face, Rip Van Winkle and Anton Rosicky ultimately reflect a shared humanity despite their divergent paths.

Both Rip Van Winkle and Anton Rosicky are characterized by their relationships, though the quality of these connections varies. Rip is well-liked by his neighbors and the children of his village, who admire his storytelling and good humor. Irving writes, “The children of the village… would shout with joy whenever he approached.” Despite this friendliness, Rip’s most significant relationship—his marriage—is defined by dysfunction. Dame Van Winkle is frequently portrayed as nagging and domineering, though it is clear that Rip’s habitual laziness and refusal to care for his own household responsibilities contribute to the strain. His preference for spending time with others over engaging in domestic duties suggests an avoidance of meaningful accountability.
In contrast, Rosicky’s relationships are deeply rooted in affection and responsibility. He is a devoted husband and father who finds joy in caring for his family. Unlike Rip, who avoids conflict and labor, Rosicky willingly sacrifices his comfort to ensure the well-being of his children and wife.
