Empathy is the ability to understand and connect with another person’s emotions, experiences, or perspectives. It goes beyond sympathy by requiring active listening, emotional awareness, and a willingness to support others (Clark et al., 2019). Visuals can powerfully communicate empathy because images often capture unspoken moments of connection and compassion.
In the first image, a person is seen with their arm around someone who appears distressed. This act of physical and emotional support demonstrates empathy through presence and comfort. The supportive individual is not trying to “fix” the problem but instead is offering reassurance and connection. Researchers describe this as an essential form of emotional attunement—being with someone in their feelings rather than pulling them out of them (Decety & Fotopoulou, 2021). The shared body language and closeness signify that the person is not alone.
In the second image, a nurse holds a patient’s hand. This conveys tenderness and compassion within a healthcare setting. Empathy in healthcare improves patient outcomes, enhances trust, and reduces emotional distress (Reiss, 2017). Here, the caregiver’s hand placement and attentive posture show understanding of both the patient’s vulnerability and their need for human connection. This is a reminder that healing is not only physical—it is also deeply emotional.
