Syrian and Ukrainian Migration
For this chapter’s case study, we will discuss migration to Europe from Syria or Ukraine. For this week’s discussion board, I want you to imagine that you have been asked to prepare a briefing for the European Commission’s Migration and Home Affairs department. Based on your knowledge of European history, and world geography, and the articles you’ve read, which of the following policies would you select as the best approach to migration to Europe from Syria or Ukraine?
- Allow all migrants from Syria or Ukraine to enter Europe.
- Only migrants who pass detailed background checks should be allowed. Those who do not pass background checks will be deported back to Syria or Ukraine.
- Europe should prohibit migrants from entering Europe and should instead support safe refugee camps in or near Syria or Ukraine.
- Europe should prohibit migrants from entering Europe and should instead intervene in Syria and Ukraine militarily.
- Europe should proportionally allocate a set number of migrants for each country based on economic and demographic factors.
