Mental Disorder

Your final paper is your opportunity to apply everything you have learned in the course to an issue you are passionate about! You will apply either CBT or a related therapy covered in this course (REBT, Mindfulness, Trauma-Informed CBT, ACT or DBT) to a specific mental health condition.

  • Paper should be at least 8 pages in length, excluding title page and References section
  • Please use APA 7 style, including writing in 3rd person (no use of me, I, etc.) a title page, page numbers and section headings.). Mental Disorder
  • Demonstrate graduate level writing, including strong organization of ideas and appropriate grammar.
  • Start with a brief introduction section, including a thesis statement that covers the scope and purpose of your paper.
  • Presenting Problem
    • Select a presenting problem, preferably a mental disorder classified in the DSM-5-TR., Describe the prevalence and diagnostic features., Explain this disorder or issue as if the reader is not familiar with it.,
    • Please also include strengths or opportunities associated with this condition., For instance, an individual with a diagnosis of Bipolar II disorder might be able to harness the increased energy and activity associated with hypomania to engage in the therapeutic process or creative problem-solving.
  • Modality
    • Summarize the history and key elements of the therapeutic approach you selected. Provide a basic overview of this treatment modality.
  • Evaluate the evidence-base for this issue.
    • Is the intervention you selected an evidence-based and effective treatment for the problem you identified?
  • Walk the reader through each step of the helping process. Share specific steps the therapist would take to:
    • Engagement
      • Rapport building, how the first session would be structured, etc.
      • Include considerations for creating a trauma-informed environment
    • Assess
      • Please note what standardized assessment/screening tool you would use to diagnose the condition. Be sure to also consider the biopsychosocial-spiritual perspective.
    • Treatment Plan/ Goal Setting
    • Intervene
      • Describe in detail what activities or exercises will happen,
      • Diversity and Inclusion Discuss specific modifications or considerations you would apply to promote inclusivity and equity with diverse clients., To make this section more detailed and specific, please select one specific demographic to consider (gender, sexuality, race, religion, age, disability, etc.).
    • Evaluate Progress
    • Terminate
  • End with a Conclusion section that ties it all together. Mental Disorder
  • Your assertions and the information you provided should be supported by literature. Please cite, using both in-text citations and a References section, at least five empirical sources such as peer-reviewed articles or textbooks.

First, post a rough draft of your final paper to the discussion thread below.  You will receive points for posting a reasonably complete draft, but the draft will not be graded by the instructor. The idea here is to help you work ahead, familiarize yourself with the rubric, and get feedback. Your rough draft does not have to be perfect, but the more complete it is, the more beneficial your peer review will be. However, if all you have is an outline, or some but not all sections complete, that is okay.
