Why Quality Matters

Option 1

There are a number of resources for both industry professionals and consumers that analyze and publish quality metrics. Examples include: Hospital Compare – published through Medicare.govJ.D. Power – well known for its car reviews, and Quality Magazine and Quality Digest – two resources used by OM professionals.

  • Locate and post a link to a quality review resource that is used in your industry (select one that is different from what has already been posted by your peers).,
  • What information do these resources provide about how they collect and analyze data and develop reports and (if applicable) rankings?,
  • Which metrics are most frequently used in assessing quality failures and the impact these failures have on costs?,
  • How can this resource be used by OM professionals to support quality improvement initiatives? Why Quality Matters,

Option 2

Quality failures have impacts that go beyond costs. Quality failures can erode an organization’s competitive advantage.

Locate and post a news story from the last six months published in The Wall Street Journal or another reputable source about an internal or external quality failure.

  • Briefly summarize the issue including what went wrong and whether it was a performance quality or conformance quality issue.,
  • What was the impact on costs to the organization and/or its customers?,
  • How did the organization address the issue? What steps did they take to either correct the problem or provide a resolution to customers?, Were these reasonable and fair? Explain.
  • What steps could have been taken to reduce or prevent this failure?

Analyzing a Larger Conversation

In Essay 2, you will use rhetorical analysis techniques to make informed comparisons between the reading you selected for Essay 1 and an additional reading chosen from the list below. Start with the idea that both authors are addressing a shared issue, but that their rhetorical situations – their occasion for writing, their sense of audience, and their purpose with regard to the issue – may be very different.

Analyzing a Larger Conversation

You should discuss and compare the two readings in terms of these and other rhetorical elements. Build your analysis on specific evidence from both readings. Are the authors trying to do the same thing, or different things? Are their audiences or occasions for writing different? If they’re both part of the same conversation, what accounts for any differences in purpose and rhetoric? Analyzing a Larger Conversation

For Essay 2, you will use the reading from your first essay, but you will connect it to another reading from the list below. Once you have worked through the two readings’ connections to one another and to a larger conversation about a significant issue, you will offer your response. As in the first paper, this response should be rooted in an analysis of your own position as a reader and comparisons to their assumptions about their audiences. Is there something neither author covers that is important to you today? Be careful what sorts of claims you make here; since you will not have the opportunity to cite credible evidence of your own or bring in new factual material, you will have to respond based on your own experiences and your analysis of the readings. Analyzing a Larger Conversation

You may choose one of the following essays to connect to the reading you analyzed for Essay 1 and respond to. Not all pairs will work, so be careful in making your choice when picking which reading to connect to the Essay 1 reading you have worked on already. You may not use anything beyond your two readings as sources.

Business & Strategic Decisions

An important aspect of starting a successful business is making strategic decisions. Using the information provided in the scenario, you will identify external opportunities and threats. You will write value statements that align with the vision and mission of the company and consider how different transaction approaches fit with the vision and mission. Establishing a culture of continuous improvement will also need to be explained. Using the attached “Ansoff Growth Matrix” template, you will classify future areas of growth that will complement your knowledge of critical thinking for business growth.

Business & Strategic Decisions

SCENARIO

Two colleagues (Diego and Maya) start a new, U.S.-based, custom-design shoe manufacturing and storefront retail business called “CustoMayD Designs” using a combination of a 3D manufacturing process (also known as additive manufacturing) and premade kits. Diego has extensive marketing experience and Maya is the technologist.

Diego knows that consumers want customized products, and even with the growth in online product availability, consumers still desire an engaging in-person retail experience. Diego is convinced that providing customers the opportunity to walk out of the store with custom shoes that feature built-in orthotic insoles in addition to allowing customers to view the 3D printing of some shoe components will increase awareness for the new company and increase sales. The company will use recycled and organic materials and adopt zero-waste processes. Business & Strategic Decisions

Using an automated 3D manufacturing process allows for making a significant proportion of shoe components closer to the customer, which results in a shorter supply chain that distributes manufacturing, reduces lead time, limits shipping, and is more sustainable. In addition, the company has the option of using a high-tech transaction approach that uses automated sales and payment kiosks, or the company can choose a high-touch approach that does not use automated kiosks and has more employees present in the store. Business & Strategic Decisions

CustoMayD Designs Vision Statement

Creating a better everyday life for disadvantaged communities by providing employment and shopping opportunities through locally manufactured, customized, affordable products.

CustoMayD Designs Mission Statement

We invest in local production sites that use sustainable practices to provide an affordable, customized shoe experience that transforms how consumers feel about their footwear.

 Critical Thinking

For this discussion, make an initial post (a couple of paragraphs or so) that explains the skill of synthesis, and then elaborate on how you use this skill in your everyday life. Include an image or attachment in your post to demonstrate how synthesis works or how you have used it. See my initial post for a good example. After you make your discussion post, be prepared to discuss your example and perhaps provide others.

Discussion Board Painting & Drawing [Initial post due Wednesday, two responses to your peers are due on Sunday]

For this discussion board, you have a choice! Pick one of the two options below.

Option 1: Creative Process Option

When artists are drawing, they use a variety of methods to suggest shaded and light areas. For this discussion board, I’d like you to experiment with some of the drawing techniques explained in the chapter. Don’t worry about whether your work is “good” or “bad”. This is an opportunity for you to experiment with materials and techniques. Students in the past have found this exercise therapeutic.

Discussion Board Painting & Drawing

  1. Review the chapter to see how artists suggest shaded and light areas in drawing., Some of these methods include cross-hatching varying the weight of the pencil charcoal or pen., When using wet media (like ink) artists add an increasing amount of water to suggest lighter areas.Discussion Board Painting & Drawing,
  2. Study the images in the textbook. Figure out what each artist did to suggest dark and light areas.,
  3. Pick a method you’d like to try.,
  4. Assemble your materials. Regular pencils and pens are fine! If you have charcoal pastels India ink or other artist drawing tools you are welcome to use them.,
  5. Spend 20 minutes making a small drawing using that technique (cross-hatching rendering etc). It can be something from your imagination or a drawing of something you see in front of you (like a cup or a piece of food). ,Be sure to use one of the methods in the text to suggest dark and light areas!Discussion Board Painting & Drawing,
  6. Attach your image to your post. (You will probably not be able to embed this one),
  7. In a few sentences describe your process., What was challenging? What was easy?, Did you enjoy the process of drawing?, Why or why not? Do not state which method you chose.,

Option 2: Video research option

  1. Find an interesting and relevant 3-15 minute video (or two) that shows a painting or drawing technique that is interesting to you.

Some good sources for videos include

  • YouTube: www.youtube.com

  2. Completion of work associated with program competencies. ,
  3. Work associated with completion of the student’s capstone project change proposal.,

Individual Success Plan

Students will use the Individual Success Plan to develop an individual plan for completing practice hours and course objectives. As a part of this process, students will identify the number of hours set aside to meet course goals.

Student expectations and instructions for completing the ISP document are provided in the “NRS-465  template.

The Individual Success Plan is a clinical document that is necessary to meet clinical requirements for this course. Therefore, the form should be submitted with the preceptor’s hand-written signature. A typed electronic signature will not be accepted.
