Case study Assignment. Case studies are an important part of most graduate programs as they reveal more readily the concept or theory discussed in a real-world context. Consider the chapters you have read from Hill text that present a case study of an organization. In each of these chapters, the way organizations incorporate various values (ex. love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.) is described in real-world scenarios. This helps us see how the value, reactions to the value, and outcomes from demonstrating the value might be displayed—and thus, presents a rich case for learning best practices and enables us to take God with us to work and everywhere. Case Studies are stories that develop a person, or a group of people, or a company over a specific time period (ex. day, week, month, year).  A case study analyzes what occurred during this time period.

Case study Assignment

For your Case Study Paper, you have selected an organization (BOMBAS) and Biblical value (KINDNESS) that the organization has displayed (ALREADY SELECTED IN OUTLINE). Write a story and develop a person or a group of people at this company.  Remember you have to write a story that shows the example of this company displaying this Biblical value.  You won’t be writing just about the company.  Write a case study where a person or group of people displayed a Biblical value.  Tell the story.  Back up the actions of the people or group in the company with scholarly references, the text, and with the Bible (this is the most important part). Discuss and expand on how this Biblical value connects to the organization and the story. Case study Assignment.  The purpose of this is for you to be able to identify Biblical values in an organization.  Remember, Biblical values can certainly be displayed in secular workplaces; after all, all truth is God’s truth! Above is information about the case study.  You have already completed the outline for this.  If you want to make any changes to your outline, get this approved by your professor prior to submitting this case study.  The outline and case study should all be on the same company.

Instructions

Follow your outline that you did earlier in this course.  Be sure to review any revisions required from your professor.  Each Roman Numeral section from your outline usually equals at lease one paragraph in the case study.  Each section of your case study should have a subheading and at least 1 paragraph.  Do not use the Roman Numerals in the Case Study. Each paragraph should have at least 5 sentences and at least 2 different references.  The case study paper must be 8–10-pages (not including Title Page, Abstract, or Reference page) and must include at least 5 scholarly resources in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible (New International Version or King James Version).  The Case Study Paper is to be written in third person and must be in current APA format. Do not use first or second person in this outline or in the case study. Please do not use direct quotes in the outline.  Only use direct quotes for Bible verses and famous quotes or dialogue.

Case study Assignment. Before submitting the case study, your outline topic (BOMBAS) and Biblical value (KINDNESS) must be approved (ALREADY APPROVED).  Once this is approved, any changes must be approved by the professor. Your case study should have a title page, abstract page, case study pages (based on the outline you created), and a reference page. Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. Use APA referencing style.

Presenting a Research Plan. Scenario: Your supervisor has approved your research question and plan for studying some aspect of diversity and/or collaboration in a community group. Now it is time to conduct your literature review and develop your hypothesis and research plan.

Assignment: In the first Touchstone, you developed a research question and prepared a preliminary bibliography for your literature review. You will now conduct your literature review, formulate your hypothesis and research plan, and develop a set of notecards that summarize your work.

Requirements: You must create 8-11 notecards using the touchstone template below. Your notecards will include: introduction card, research question card, literature review (4–6 cards), hypothesis card and operational definitions card (if needed) and a research method card.

Presenting a Research Plan

Directions

Step 1: Revise Touchstone 1

First, return to the community group description, research question, and proposed bibliography that you submitted in Touchstone 1, and make any necessary changes based on feedback from the grader. You will likely want to refine your reading list based on the feedback you received and what you learned about diversity and collaboration in Unit 3.

Step 2: Conduct a Literature Review

Next, complete your reading for your literature review. Reminder of attributes of good readings for your literature review: They are academic, scholarly works about research findings or they are reliable journalistic reporting based on scientifically credible and reliable data. They should have been published in the last 20 years—unless they are a landmark work on the topic and provide important background or as a comparison. They look at different sides of the argument and a variety of perspectives. As you complete each reading, take notes. Some of the questions you could ask about each reading include: Who wrote this article? Is it the researchers themselves, or is it a journalist writing about their findings? Where was it published? Is it a scholarly publication like an academic journal, or is it for a popular audience? If the publication is for a popular audience, how would you characterize the audience? Presenting a Research Plan. Do they have an academic affiliation? Are the researchers sociologists, or are they of a different discipline? When was the research conducted? What question were the researchers attempting to answer? How does this question/topic relate to my question/topic? What methods did they use to study their question? What conclusions did they draw from their results? How do their conclusions impact my research question, hypothesis, or research plan? As you did for your first Touchstone, you will include five key elements for each source, with each element separated by a period: Author’s name(s), Publisher and publication date, Title of the source, in quotation marks, Page numbers (if applicable), Source’s location for web-based texts (URL)

Step 3: Formulate a Hypothesis, State Your Operational Definitions, and Choose a Research Method

Next, formulate a hypothesis for your research question and choose a sociological research method appropriate for testing your hypothesis. While you won’t be conducting the research, you will write up a description of how you plan to conduct your research. (HINT: Refer back to Lesson 1.3.5: Formulating a Hypothesis, Lesson 1.3.6: Collecting Data: Quantitative Approaches , and Lesson 1.3.6: Collecting Data: Quantitative Approaches for help.) A formal hypothesis states the relationship between two variables—one is independent (IV) and one is dependent (DV). It must also be formatted as an If/Then statement, for instance: If people eat chocolate (IV), then they will get pimples (DV). If people go to the gym (IV), then they will be fit (DV).

Operational Definitions

Operational definitions identify important concepts related to the research. For example, If your community organization includes students, are they K-12? College? Medical? Or are students defined as: young adults between the ages of 18-21 who are attending a particular college or university?

Research Method

Deciding on a research method will also take some thought and planning: Will you use qualitative or quantitative research or a combination? How will you engage subjects or find your data? What kinds of tools and assessments will be used to gather the data?

Step 4: Prepare Your Notecards

Presenting a Research Plan. Finally, incorporate Steps 1-4 to prepare a set of notecards for your proposed research study. Use the template provided to create 8-11 notecards that present the work you completed in Steps 1-4. Use APA referencing style.

Guatemala Case Study. The following controversial case was reported in a local newspaper. It involved a father from Guatemala who exposed the hand of his 5-year-old son to an open gas flame as punishment for stealing a packet of gum. School staff noticed the bandage on the boy’s hand and having learned from him how he sustained the injury made a report to Child Protective Services. Citing, “we find ourselves in the cross-current of customs and habits,” the judge reduced the charge from a felony with punishment of up to 6 years in state prison to a misdemeanor and fined the father $100.00. Guatemala Case Study. The prosecutor proposed state prison for the father, and others commented that exposing a child’s hand to an open flame is not an accepted form of punishment in Guatemalan culture or in the Latin culture generally. The parents reported being unfamiliar with American culture, but now have learned their lesson and plan to be better parents. It was the father’s first time being charged with child abuse, but during the court hearing, the judge rejected the notion that several incidents of the father hitting the child with a belt could be interpreted as child abuse. After reading the case study for unit 3, do you think the judge was too lenient in the case? How is this a good example of cross-cultural conflict? Would you have reported this case to Child Protective Services? Why or why not? Make sure to ask question for peers.
