Rhetorical Analysis – Journal Article

Choose a peer reviewed journal article from your field. You are looking for an article that has either made a new discovery or is reporting on primary research the authors have conducted using an IMRD structure. A literature review (summary of the research on a topic), as described in the handout on Blackboard, will not work well for this assignment. When you submit this worksheet, you must include a copy of the article. A link will NOT be sufficient. PDF, Word, or other “savable” files are acceptable. I will be reviewing your source article first and then your worksheet.

Read the article carefully until you have a good understanding of it and then answer 10 of the following questions. Use complete sentences, and insert your answers into this document. Please clearly identify your answers with an alternative font color or treatment, such as bolding or italics. Be specific and give examples.

  1. Based on class lecture and discussion, what is this article’s purpose?
  2. What is the article’s title? Where was it originally published and when?
  3. What is the article about and what is its thesis statement?
  4. Who wrote this document? What are their credentials? (What does the article tell you? What can you assume is true about this author or authors? What does additional research tell you? The first author’s credentials is sufficient for research outside of the article itself.)

Rhetorical Analysis - Journal Article

Rhetorical Analysis – Journal Article

  1. Who is the audience of this article? Who are the primary readers? Describe them.
  2. What characteristics do these readers have based on language use, content, and format/organization choices? What does the writer seem to take for granted about the reader’s knowledge of the subject matter, methodologies, or conventions?
  3. Look at the introduction. What does the author/s say about relevant research that came before this project?
  4. In the introduction, what does the author/s say about how this project is different than other research?
  5. In the introduction, what sources are cited and how are they used? What are their purpose in this section?
  6. In the methods/materials section, what do you observe about the author/s description of the methods they used?

Rhetorical Analysis – Journal Article

  1. In the methods/materials section, what kind of sources does the writer cite? How many?
  2. What function do these citations perform in the methods/materials section?
  3. In the results section, on which data and analysis do the researchers-writers concentrate?
  4. In the discussion section, how do the researchers expand the context of the article away from the data collection site(s) to bring in larger issues and perhaps more places and a larger time span? Give an example.
  5. Describe the article’s document design and the article’s use of graphics.
  6. What claims about cause and effect are made?
  7. What correlations are drawn?

Rhetorical Analysis – Journal Article

  1. Pay attention to the qualifying language the writers use in expressing implications in the discussion section. Write down a few of the qualifying words or phrases. (Some common terms include “seems,” “may,” “possibly,” “probably,” “sometimes,” and many other related words or phrases.
  2. Think about the terms from question 18 in stating the implications. Do they affect your reaction to the implications? Do they appear to express the appropriate level of confidence? What changes would you suggest?
  3. What kind of data is offered to support claims? Qualitative? Quantitative? Give a couple of examples.
  4. What tense, mood, and voice are the verbs in? (Do they change from section to section?)
  5. What are the nouns like? (specialized jargon? common nouns?) Give a couple of examples.
  6. What are the adjectives like? (concrete, specific measurements? generally descriptive?) Give a couple of examples.
  7. What is the average length of sentences? Are the sentences mostly simple, compound, or complex?
  8. Give a general summary of whether you feel this article is effective in communicating the discovery with its audience or not and why. Use APA referencing style.

Media’s Influence on Death

During week 2 we investigated the media’s influence on death.  For this assignment you will research two different individual memorial websites.  The memorial websites you will research are only those websites that allow an individual or a family to create a memorial for an individual that is deceased, not for a deceased group, or to hold a virtual service for the deceased. Use the enclosed template for this assignment.

You will answer the following in two separate sections for each memorial website you pick, which is already provided for you on the template.  Answers are to be completed in detail with support from each website.  Not just a sentence or two or yes/no answers. You need to explain for each question with details, examples, and the like. This means you will need in-text citations and a resource page to support your assertions. Do not use long quotes in this assignment.  The assignment does ‘not’ require you to make a memorial either.

Media's Influence on Death

Media’s Influence on Death

  • List the website name and address
  • Does the website clearly state its objective(s) for participants?  If not, what you do you believe are the objectives for each memorial website?
  • Is the website free and easily accessible?
  • Is the website user friendly or difficult to use?
  • What are the features to each memorial website you chose?  Are there extra features available at a financial cost?
  • What is posted on each individual’s memorial website, e.g., pictures, text? Be sure to explain.
  • How does the website support religious commitment and ritual along with dealing with the dying process and grief?
  • How do you believe the media has played a role with influencing the memorial websites you chose?

Media’s Influence on Death

Then you will conclude the assignment with a paragraph explaining your thoughts for creating, or not creating, an online presence for a deceased person on a memorial website.  Be sure to explain your reasoning. Use APA referencing style.

Here are some examples of websites to investigate.

You will need to Google the site you are interested in for the assignment.

  • Forever Missed
  • Never Gone
  • Christian Memorials
  • Memories
  • Remembered
  • Gathering Us
  • Find a Grave
  • My Keeper
  • My Farewelling

Psychology Case Study Homework

Please find an article or news story about some whistleblowing situation. Please do not use high-profile cases like Snowden or Manning. If you can find the same story described by different sources all the better. I need to be able to verify the account.

Then, using the attached worksheet discuss the case. Specifically, after telling me a sentence or two about the case, you will identify all of the key stakeholders and how you feel they were negatively impacted. For example, if someone released company records and emails to blow the whistle, discuss whose emails and how the information led to actions against them. If no one was negatively impacted, then why use it for this case study?

Psychology Case Study Homework

Discuss the final outcome (see directions) and most importantly, use your moral compass to describe or explain why you feel someone’s actions were morally wrong. Again, if there was no wrongdoing, why was some whistle blown?

Finally, imagine you are in a leadership position. What could you reasonably do to keep the situation from happening again, to prevent the need for someone to feel a need to blow the whistle? Depending on the situation, you may feel the real wrongdoer is the whistleblower. If so, then describe why what the company/government did or is doing is justified, again using your moral theories.

This case study will be evaluated using the attached grading table. Please use this to your advantage to check your work before submitting. Be sure to apply at least one ethical system in depth, including the application of at least 3 specific aspects of that system to the analysis of all parts of the worksheet/case study.
