Safety Training Program

SAFETY FIRST: CASE STUDY

BNSF Railway is a North American freight transportation company with over 32,000 miles of routes. BNSF Railway hauls agricultural, consumer, and industrial products and coal. BNSF Railway puts safety above everything else it does, including productivity. BNSF Railway recognizes that safety is based on having well-trained employees who share BNSF Railway’s vision for an injury- and accident-free workplace and who are willing to look out for one another. Thanks to its employees’ commitment, a carefully maintained network and equipment, and well-prepared communities, BNSF Railway is a safety leader in the rail industry.

Safety Training Program

Approaching Others About Safety (AOAS) is a training program for all BNSF Railway employees. Four hundred and fifty BNSF Railway employees train their peers. Employees serve as trainers because page 200BNSF Railway believes they are in the best position to keep themselves and their peers safe.

The goal of the program is for BNSF Railway employees to be confident about giving feedback to each other about safe behavior and avoiding unsafe situations. Employees need to learn the value of providing feedback when they see unsafe behavior or situations, including positively recognizing when someone is working safely or correcting them when they perceive another employee is at risk. Training should focus on the types of exposures that tend to result in the most injuries, including walking/path of travel around trains, rails, and equipment, pinch points between the railway cars, and climbing or descending locomotives and railway cars.

Safety Training Program. Describe the different types of instructional characteristics that this program should have for learning and transfer to occur and for a decrease in injuries and accidents to result. Would these characteristics vary depending on who was attending the program (e.g., managers, train crew, employees who maintain track, structures, or signals)? If so, how would they vary? Explain how a community of practice (COP) could be beneficial for this program.

Behavior

Overview

Before researching a behavior, it is important to first identify and define it. All experiments must have a behavior (dependent variable), at least one participant, and a setting where they take place. For this assignment, you will start writing the Introduction and the Methods section of your hypothetical behavior analytic study. Consider an area of research that interests you. Then, select a specific action, population, and setting for your hypothetical study.

Instructions

Complete the following sections of your hypothetical behavior analytic study. Use the Hypothetical Behavior Analytic Study Template [DOCX] to complete this assignment. For each assignment you will add new sections.

Behavior

Introduction

Select and operationally define a dependent variable (action). Your operational definition should be brief (1¿2 sentences), objective, clear, and complete.

  • Objective refers to unambiguous description of the actions; void of mentalistic words. An operational definition that meets the objective criteria is one that is observable and measurable.
  • Clear refers to what a person says or does; the topography is clearly defined in such a manner that two observers will have a high agreement when the behavior is observed.
  • Complete refers to the boundaries of what is included and excluded. To discriminate the boundaries of the operational definition, include examples and nonexamples with minimal differences.

For more information about writing an operational definition, review the following information in your Applied Behavior Analysis text.

  • Hawkins and Dobes’s three characteristics (top of page 70).
  • Morris’s three criteria for testing a definition (page 70).

Discuss the social significance of the actions and why your research should address it.

Methods: Participants and Setting

Identify the participants that were targeted in the hypothetical study (diagnosis, age, other important information) and the setting where the study took place. This will be the start of the methods section (participants and setting).

Additional Requirements, Behavior

Your assignment should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Writing is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: References and citations are formatted according to current APA style guidelines. Review Evidence and APA Links to an external site. For more information on how to cite your sources.
  • Resources: A sufficient number of scholarly or professional resources.
  • Length: 2–3 double-spaced pages, not including the title page or reference page.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 points.

Competencies Measured, Behavior

By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Apply techniques of behavioral measurement and data display.
    • Select and operationally define an appropriate action for a hypothetical behavior analytic study.
    • Explain the social significance of the behavior chosen.
    • Describe the participants and setting used in the hypothetical study.
  • Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology.
    • Demonstrate an academic writing style through well-organized prose that follows assignment guidelines.
    • Demonstrate compliance with current APA style, citation, and referencing guidelines. Use APA referencing style.

Country Report 2.

The starting point for this assignment is your first country report. This time, choose a product or service that you might sell there. The choice of product will not be graded (there are no wrong options) so choose one that is interesting or easy to talk about for you.

Country report 2.

Start your report with a sentence of the type “I want to sell (your product choice) in (country).” This is meant to keep you focused on information that is relevant for that product category. You will redo your old country report in light of your newly acquired knowledge about culture and your choice of product. This will mostly mean adding new information and using the right terms and concepts to discuss culture. It may require that you delete old information if you feel it doesn’t belong in your new country report.

Think the type of actionable, relevant information that a manager would want if they knew nothing at all about the country and tasked you with putting them up to speed. It should be a short (approx. 3-4 single-spaced pages) bullet-point report of facts, two or three visuals are acceptable if relevant. Country Report.

This time you are expected to use your knowledge of international marketing, in particular the lessons in the recent modules, to craft the report. Make sure to update your PEST Analysis based on any changes or new information. At the end of the report, add an OT (Opportunities-Threats) table based on the updated PEST. The submission must also include references, cited at the end of the write-up.

Country Report 2. The challenge of this assignment is in summarizing an entire human community and reducing it to a considerably short list of sentences, numbers and visuals. You will be graded on how well you summarize a culture through a sound and validated set of dimensions such as the ones learned in this course. Use APA referencing style.

Scholarly Activity MKT

Throughout this course, you have learned about the elements of a marketing plan. This assignment will allow you to research the marketing methodology of a specific brand of an existing publicly traded company. Using a publicly traded company will give you access to more information to complete this assignment. Remember: Some publicly traded companies offer many branded products. For example, see Proctor and Gamble. It would be unfathomable to think that Proctor and Gamble, with revenue over $80B and 100K+ employees, only employs one marketing strategy. Thus, selecting a brand would be a better use of your time.

Scholarly Activity MKT.

Scholarly Activity MKT. Include the sections below in your marketing plan:

  • Introduce your company and brand.
  • Competitive Analysis: Who are your company’s competitors, and how are they differentiated? Identify two or three strengths and two or three weaknesses of your company brand compared to a minimum of two competitor’s brands.
  • Marketing Strategies: What are the marketing strategies used by your company to manage the global customer brand? Use the four Ps in your analysis, which are listed below.
  • Product: Begin with a theoretical definition of a product. What is the product/service offered by your company? How did developing these new products affect the marketing strategy?
  • Place: Begin with a theoretical definition of place. What are the distribution channels used by your company/brand?
  • Price: Begin with a theoretical definition of price. What is the pricing strategy used by your company brand?
  • Promotion: Begin with a theoretical definition of promotion. What are the traditional and digital methods of marketing and promotion used by your company’s brand? Explain a minimum of three traditional and three digital methods.
  • Competitive Advantage: Identify whether your company brand has a competitive advantage in each area of the four Ps. Remember that your company brand could have a competitive advantage in one area and not in another. Include supporting rationale.

Scholarly Activity MKT. Your submission must be in Level 1 and Level 2 APA headings. You must include at least five scholarly sources (no blogs, no Wikipedia), and three must be peer-reviewed sources. Your scholarly activity must be at least six pages long, not counting the title page and references page. APA format is required. Use APA referencing style.

Management Philosophy.

After 19 years of service, Paul was appointed as the warden of a small mixed-security prison in a rural community. He oversees 105 inmates and 51 staff members in a facility designed to hold 100 minimum and medium security prisoners. Over 80 percent of his correctional officers have three or more years’ experience on the job, and the treatment and education programs are run by qualified professionals with long work histories at the facility. Generally, Paul is happy with his job and doesn’t mind dealing with a few inexperienced correctional officers who tend to make minor mistakes. He occasionally gets some tough prisoners, but they settle down quickly because of the fair policies enforced by Paul. The overall environment of the prison is peaceful.

Management Philosophy

One day he had lunch with his friend Stephen, who is the warden of a large maximum-security prison located outside a metropolitan city with a high crime rate. Stephen oversees 720 inmates and 130 staff members in a facility designed to house 375 prisoners. Due to overcrowding and budget cuts, the prison offers limited treatment and education programs, most of which are staffed by volunteers. The majority of the inmates are repeat offenders with lengthy sentences, and 20 percent of them are serving life without the possibility of parole. Major disciplinary infractions occur on a daily basis. Although the overall atmosphere of the prison is orderly, there is constant tension between the staff and inmates, and maintaining security is an ongoing struggle.

Stephen’s views about his job are completely different from Paul’s. Stephen finds his job overwhelming, thankless, and stressful. This is surprising to Paul because both of them underwent the same training, worked together as fresh officers, and use similar managerial techniques. Paul begins to wonder how situational determinants are affecting his and Stephen’s ability to be effective leaders and managers.

  • Assess the reasons for the different patterns in the relationships that the two wardens have with their subordinates.
  • How can Paul and Stephen’s management philosophies affect the work patterns in their respective facilities?
  • How could work pattern and size of the organizational unit affect Paul and Stephen differently? How could it affect the desired management philosophy?
  • How could the prisons that Paul and Stephen work in differ with regard to crises? How could this influence their management philosophy? Use APA referencing style.

One of the obstacles to defining the role of a leader is the difficulty in defining what leadership entails. Think about the role of leadership in the criminal-justice system and answer the following questions in a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document:

The Role of Leadership

  • How can you differentiate between the role of a leader and a manager in the criminal justice system with reference to the following:
    • Operational functions of the organization, such as budget planning, recruitment and hiring, infrastructure maintenance, and performance reviews
    • Relationship with subordinates in the organization
  • Are there any overlaps between effective leadership and effective management roles in the criminal-justice system?
  • Does being an effective leader in the criminal justice system conflict with being an effective manager?
  • Are leadership responsibilities tied to official job descriptions in criminal justice or could a criminal justice agent of any position be a leader? Why?
  • How do the different ways of interpreting and defining a leader’s role influence effective leadership? Explain with reference to the various definitions of leadership as a specialized role and a shared influence process.
