PSYC775 Teaching Philosophy Assignment

Overview

The purpose of the Teaching Philosophy Assignment is to generate an initial Teaching Philosophy statement. As described in your textbook, a teaching philosophy is a “description of how you see yourself as a teacher, and especially what you do and do not value in the teaching domain” (Bernstein et al., 2020, p.227). Although teaching philosophies are working documents that will change over time, it can be helpful to consider your personal philosophy of teaching before creating or planning a particular course.

Instructions

You will be writing a teaching philosophy statement focusing on the level of higher education/college teaching. Because many of you may not have prior teaching experience, your philosophy statement does not need to include details related to past teaching methods or experiences, but rather a discussion of what you value educationally and the methods you would use if you were an instructor in the future. Teaching philosophies are personal and subjective. Therefore, the specific content of your statements will vary depending on your individual experiences and values. To help you formulate your teaching philosophy, below is a list of some general questions you may wish to consider when you are composing your statement:

PSYC775 Teaching Philosophy Assignment

PSYC775 Teaching Philosophy Assignment

  • What are your motivations for teaching?
  • Why do you believe teaching is important?
  • What are some of the positive qualities, teaching methods, or relational skills you have seen in prior teachers you have had?
  • What teaching methods do you believe are the most effective and valuable?
  • In your opinion, what are some effective ways to assess student learning?
  • What are some ways you would choose to evaluate your own teaching performance?
  • What are your future teaching goals?
  • How do you hope your future students would describe you as a teacher?
  • What specific skills would you hope your students would gain from your class?
  • What is your vision of an ideal classroom climate?

PSYC775 Teaching Philosophy Assignment

Keep in mind these questions are provided as a guide and you do not need to answer them all in your assignment. If you need further ideas or help with your statement, please see the additional guides/websites for constructing a teaching philosophy statement, which can be found on the Teaching Philosophy Assignment page under Teaching Philosophy Resources. Because these statements are so personal, there is no one “right” way to construct a philosophy statement. Your focus should be on thinking through your educational beliefs and experiences and trying to get these thoughts and ideas on paper in a cohesive and organized way.

Assignment requirements include:

  • Your statement must be 1–2 pages (double-spaced). Brevity is important in a teaching statement. An APA-style title page is required and is not included in this length requirement. You do not need to include an abstract.
  • Your statement must include a specific discussion of your personal beliefs about teaching. It should not simply be a general literature review on teaching practices. It also should not simply be a list of prior teaching experience (e.g., a resume or CV).
  • Your statement is not required to contain citations, but if it does, you must include an APA style reference page for any sources used.
  • First person is allowed for this assignment.
  • Your paper must be submitted as a Word document.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

PSYC775 Syllabus Draft Assignment

Overview

In this module you will begin thinking about a hypothetical course you would like to teach in the future. For the Syllabus: Draft Assignment, you will create a draft version of a syllabus for a specific hypothetical course. Before beginning your syllabus draft, you will need to choose a textbook for an undergraduate psychology course and you will use that textbook for this assignment and throughout the rest of the term for future assignments.

Instructions

Once you choose your textbook and create the syllabus, you will not be able to change your chosen book/hypothetical course for the remainder of the term, so try to pick a subject within the field of psychology that interests you. If you have access to an undergraduate psychology textbook, you are free to use it for this assignment/term. If you do not have access to an undergraduate psychology textbook that you want to use, a list of approved open-access textbooks can be found on the Syllabus: Draft Assignment page under Syllabus: Draft Resources. These books are free to access in full online. If you are not using one of your own previous textbooks, you must choose one from this approved list. Keep in mind that you will not need to read this textbook in full, but rather use it as a guide for assignments throughout this term.

PSYC775 Syllabus Draft Assignment

PSYC775 Syllabus Draft Assignment

After choosing your textbook and course subject area, you will begin to draft a mock syllabus for your hypothetical course. Your syllabus should be for a residential course, although you may incorporate some online components if desired. Your syllabus draft must contain the following sections/pieces of information:

  • Course Information – Course number and title of your course
  • Class Information – Days, time, and location of class meetings
  • Instructor Information
    • Your name, office location, and preferred contact information
    • Your schedule of office hours
  • Course Description – Provide a brief paragraph that gives a general overview of the course subject or main topics.
  • Course Objectives/Learning Goals – Provide a list of 3–5 learning goals for your course. Be sure to start each objective with a learning verb, such as those described in Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • Required Materials – List any required materials for your course. This section must at least include an APA-style reference for your textbook choice. Any other materials you list must also be in APA style.
  • Course Schedule – Provide a typical 16-week semester schedule for your course. For this syllabus draft, your schedule must include the week number (e.g., Week 1, Week 2, and on through Week 16) along with the topics/chapter readings covered for that week. You do not need to include any assignment information at this time (you will submit this later in the term).
  • Grading Scale – Provide a grading scale that indicates what point ranges will correspond to which letter grades.

PSYC775 Syllabus Draft Assignment

  • Classroom PoliciesBriefly outline policies covering each of these areas:
    • Attendance
    • Late work
    • Classroom behavior/expectations (include details like cell phone use, talking, eating, respect for others, etc.)
    • Academic honesty (include possible repercussions for violations)
    • Accommodations policy (include a statement regarding access to accommodations for those with disabilities)

Feel free to include any other classroom policies desired

You may format your syllabus in any way you choose, as long as it contains all the necessary information. For information that is hypothetical (e.g., course number, location of class/office), you may provide mock information for the sake of creating a complete syllabus. You are also welcome to include any additional information desired in your syllabus beyond the required elements. If you are using another syllabus as a guide, do not simply copy and paste policies, descriptions, goals, etc. You should demonstrate that you can create and articulate these elements in your own words. As stated above, this syllabus draft does not need to include any information regarding what assignments will be given to students and when they will be assigned. This will be completed later in the term. APA.

Search & Seizure Case Study

Overview

The Fourth Amendment is one of the cornerstones of our freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. It protects people against unreasonable search and seizure of their person, property, and belongings. Law enforcement officers must work to ensure they do not violate the Fourth Amendment while performing their duties. They have a responsibility to protect people’s rights and not invalidate evidence for any future court cases.

In this assignment, you will analyze a case study based on an actual case to determine whether police officers’ search and seizure actions related to suspected illegal drug activities were constitutional. Here is the case study you will analyze in your assignment.

Search & Seizure Case Study

Case Study

In the Los Angeles Brentwood neighborhood, neighbors have notified the police that they have seen vehicles coming and going from one specific home. The incidents occur between 11:00p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The neighbors believe drug activity may be taking place. The local police division assigns officers Williams and Martinez to investigate possible drug activity at that location.

Search & Seizure Case Study

Officer Williams contacts the neighborhood’s regular trash collection service and asks it to put the contents of the subject’s (defendant’s) garbage left at the curb in plastic bags so as to not mix the subject’s garbage with others. He also asked the trash collector to turn the subject’s bags over to him at the end of trash day collections. The trash collector did as Officer Williams requested. Officer Williams’s partner, Officer Martinez, searched through the garbage and found items indicative of narcotics use. Officer Williams and Officer Martinez then listed the information obtained from the trash in an affidavit to support a warrant to search the defendant’s home. Officer Martinez and Officer Williams encountered the defendant at the house later that day upon execution of the warrant. The officers found quantities of cocaine and heroin during the search and arrested the defendant on felony narcotics charges.

Note: As you complete this assignment, it will be helpful to you to read the actual case on which this case study is based: California v. Greenwood.

Search & Seizure Case Study

Instructions

Write a three- to four-page analysis of this case study in which you:

  1. Explain in your own words the Fourth Amendment, which governs the officers’ actions.
  2. Determine which of the following doctrines apply to this case study: plain view, abandonment, open fields, or border searches.
  3. Be sure to support your determination by citing specific case law and/or contemporary cases.
  • You may find the CQ Supreme Court Collection database useful as you conduct your research. You will also find this database and other useful ones under Strayer’s B.S. in Criminal Justice library resource page. Click on Specialized Databases.
  • This less than two-minute video, called Finding Supreme Court Cases Relating to Specific Amendments, shows you how to search for cases by amendment.
  1. Assess the constitutionality of the officers’ actions in the case study.
  2. Use three sources to support your writing.
  • Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate.
  • Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment.
  • For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.
  • You may use your textbook as one of your resources.

PADM 700 Annotated Bibliography

Overview

The foundation for sound scholarship is a solid command of the academic literature in your field. A scholar builds this foundation by reading and evaluating one academic source at a time.

Over time, you will read many, many sources. It is vitally important for you to keep a record of what you have read, along with important annotations so that you remember how each source is relevant to your research. These citation records include:

  • Basic bibliographic details: Author, Title, Publication Name, Date, Page Numbers.
  • A brief summary of the source: What was the key argument? What were its strengths or weaknesses? Was anything in the piece applicable to your future research?
  • Tags or Keywords: You should consider how to organize your sources so that you can easily recall sources that are relevant to various research projects you may be managing, and sources that are relevant to different parts of a research project.

PADM 700 Annotated Bibliography

PADM 700 Annotated Bibliography

This Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment will introduce you to the process of identifying, recording, and annotating sources for later use. It will also introduce you to a citation management tool called RefWorks that is available to all Liberty University students. A link to RefWorks is included in the assignment prompt for Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment.

NOTE: If you are already accustomed to using another citation manager, you are not required to use RefWorks, but you are strongly encouraged to do so.

For this assignment, you are required to submit an Annotated Bibliography in which you:

  • Identify at least ten sources that are relevant to a public policy issue that you may be interested in researching for your dissertation.
    • State and briefly describe, in a few sentences, the public policy issue you intend to explore in this assignment.
      • Note that these sources can be used for your Research Paper: Literature Assessment Assignment, so be thoughtful in selecting them.
        • Create an entry for each source in RefWorks, or your chosen citation manager.
  • Annotate each source with a summary of at least 50 words. (If you use RefWorks, write your annotation for each source in the “Abstract” field of your record for that source.)
    • Each annotation should state the central thesis of the source being cited.
    • Each annotation should explain how the source’s author(s) support their thesis.
    • Each annotation should evaluate the relevance or applicability of the source to your research interest.

PADM 700 Annotated Bibliography

Produce an Annotated Bibliography document according to current APA format. (See the Liberty University Writing Center for a sample Annotated Bibliography – a link to this is included in the Resources section in this assignment’s prompt.)

  • Ensure that you have a properly formatted Title Page with your name, the course name, the instructor name, and the date of your document.
  • Ensure that your citations are properly formatted and alphabetized.
  • Ensure that your full annotation of each source is included beneath the source’s citation.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
