Comeau Family – Case Analysis

Read the following scenario:

You are a nurse employed in a community health care centre. You meet the Comeau family for the first time. This family has recently moved to Montreal. Mr. Comeau is an electrical engineer. His wife is a stenographer who is currently staying at home with their children: Marcel, age 4 and Antoinette, age 2. Mrs. Comeau’s mother Mrs. Beaupre has also come with the family for this clinic visit. Mr. and Mrs. Comeau and the children are fluently bilingual but Mrs. Beaupre shyly admits, “her English is not too good.” You notice however that she follows the conversation and laughs and smiles when everyone else does. The family is well dressed and groomed. They appear healthy and seem to be at ease with each other. The parents and grandmother are patient and affectionate with the children who are actively exploring the clinic room. Soon, both children settle quietly on the floor because Mrs. Beaupre brings a few toys out of her handbag.

Comeau Family – Case Analysis

The family has come to the clinic for two reasons. The first one is about their children’s eating patterns and diet. They are “such picky eaters” Mrs. Comeau exclaims. Marcel does not like milk unless it is chocolate milk and Antoinette, a petite little toddler, “eats like a sparrow” according to Mr. Comeau. The second reason was that Mrs. Beaupre, who lives with them, has not yet met anyone her age in their neighborhood. Mr. and Mr. Comeau think it would be a good idea to get information about programs for seniors that Mrs. Beaupre could participate in. Mrs. Beaupre smiles at the children, as her daughter and son-in-law speak about this. Use APA referencing style.

    1. What questions would the nurse in this situation ask to guide her inquiry into the assessment of this family’s health? With each question that you list, what answer might be given, based on what you know about the family from the details provided in the scenario?
    2. Once the family’s responses to the questions of inquiry have been obtained, how would you begin planning for the promotion of this family’s health? What would the process look like? How would it feel for the nurse and the family? What goals do you think could be developed, as a result of this planning process?
    3. What family nursing theory, framework, or tools could guide you in the assessment of the family in this scenario?
