Urban Space Representation
Description
Plans for urban space are also representations of space. They draw on prior narratives and construct frameworks for understanding. Like advertisements they “sell” ideas. They embody points of view and direct attention. CHEERS (Cleveland Harbor Eastern Embayment Resilience Study) has developed a website to inform the public and to gather opinions about alternative approaches to the Cleveland waterfront. www.clevelandmetroparks.com/about/cleveland-metroparks-organization/planning/cleveland-harbor-eastern-embayment-resiliense-stud The public can view representations of three alternative approaches. 1) Connect with Nature, 2) Touch the Water, and 3) Play at the Shore. These are presented in short videos with oral descriptions and representations. Look at them all. Choose one.
Urban Space Representation
Write an analysis addressing the following points: 1) What kind of prior knowledge does the presentation assume the readers have. In other words, what are its strengths and weaknesses in terms of the intelligent lay reader who is a nearby resident but doesn’t have a planning or design background. 2) How effective is the presentation is directing readers’ attention? What elements would you improve? Are there any omissions that the intelligent lay reader would notice? 3) Now finally, who are the most likely users of the plan you have chosen to analyze? Assess it in terms of its potential to meet the goals of involving users in making and remaking spaces in which they have a place. Mention specific aspects. This should be 1000 words. Include a word count at the bottom of the page.
