CMH Assignment C

Assessment- Clinical supervision and reflective practice in the mental health sector

Assessment type – Essay

Word limit/length – 2000 words

Overview

This assignment provides an opportunity to consider how you might develop your capacity as a reflective practitioner, and how clinical supervision (a form of reflective practice) can contribute to better outcomes for service users. Whilst talking about psychiatric nursing, Phil Barker (1994, in Lakeman 2000) suggested that clinical supervision served two main functions, to protect people in care from mental health professionals and to protect mental health professionals from themselves. Clinical supervision has long been an essential element of psychotherapy training and practice and is encouraged if not mandated for most mental health professionals. This is your opportunity to explore clinical supervision in some depth and to hopefully become an informed and sophisticated supervisee. Lakeman, R. (2000). Advanced nursing practice: experience, education and something else. Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, 7(1), 89-94. doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2850.2000.00257.x

CMH Assignment C

Learning outcomes

This assessment task is aligned with the following learning outcomes:

Critically explore the concepts of empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence in the provision of mental health care and how these can be sustained and developed through reflective practice and clinical supervision in order to improve mental health outcomes.

Assessment details

CMH Assignment C. With reference to scholarly literature and research evidence, argue that clinical supervision and reflective practice are essential to achieve positive outcomes for service users in mental health care. Ensure that your essay shows the link between clinical supervision and reflective practice to the concepts of empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence. Remember that a key aspect of this assessment is to reference scholarly literature and research evidence. This assignment differs from previous assignment, in that it allows you to consider your own reflective practice and look at the impact of clinical supervision on consumers of mental health services. Clinical supervision is common but is not mandated for all mental health professionals, so you may wish to visit the Australian Clinical Supervision Association website for background information if you are unfamiliar with this practice. By exploring the concepts of reflective practice and clinical supervision, and then reflecting on the impacts of clinical supervision, your experience as a supervisee will hopefully be enriched.
