What is your Narrowed Research Topic?

The Ethical, Societal, and Scientific Implications of Legalizing Genetic Modification and Cloning in Humans

Why have you chosen this topic? How does this topic affect you personally? (It does.) Be specific.

I have chosen this topic because genetic modification and cloning have the potential to revolutionize medicine and human health. The idea of eliminating genetic disorders, extending human lifespan, and enhancing physical and cognitive abilities is both fascinating and controversial. This topic presents a vision of the future where chronic diseases and genetic limitations become obsolete. However, genetic cloning cannot be taken lightly, and there are concerns about the disastrous implications it could bring. By exploring this topic, I hope to find strong arguments that consider both the potential benefits and the ethical concerns.

Narrowed Research Topic

What kind of foundational or base knowledge might your team need before starting your research journey?,

  • Scientific Basis: Understanding the different techniques through which cloning or genetic modification can be carried out.,
  • Historical Context: Reviewing past cloning experiments including the most famous one Dolly the sheep.,
  • Ethical and Legal Considerations: Examining the concerns raised by bioethicists, religious groups, and politicians regarding this issue.,
  • Public Perception: Investigating media reactions and understanding public fears regarding this new technology.,
  • Current Regulations: Reviewing the existing laws on this topic in the USA Europe and China.

How much do you already know about the topic?

I believe I understand the basic concepts behind genetic modifications and cloning. Additionally, I am aware that in the past, experiments have been conducted on cloning animals, as well as some attempts at genetic modifications in humans. However, I need to delve deeper into the ethical debate, legal frameworks, and the social consequences if this technology is adopted on a global scale.

Narrowed Research Topic

Offer at least three potential perspectives to explore in your research.

  • Scientific and Medical Advances: The potential to eliminate genetic diseases such as cancer. Applications in regenerative medicine and organ transplantation. Preventive medicine or a definitive cure for multiple diseases.
  • Ethical and Social Concerns: The debate over “designer babies” and the implications of genetic inequality. Religious or philosophical arguments against genetic modification. Concerns about harmful genetic modifications or the loss of genetic diversity.
  • Political and Legal Considerations: Comparing the different regulations among the three major global powers: the USA, the EU, and China. Potential changes in these regulations. The role of governments and international organizations in regulating genetic modifications and cloning.

Narrowed Research Topic

Ask yourself: Who is impacted by this topic? Who cares about this topic? Who researches this topic, or works in this field? Who might be making things better or worse?

  • Individuals with Genetic Disorders.
  • Scientists and Medical Researchers.
  • Ethicists and Religious Groups.
  • Lawmakers and Government Agencies.
  • Pharmaceutical and Biotech Companies.

Theories of Crime and criminal justice can be defined as statements about relationships, particularly between an independent variable and a dependent variable. Academics refer to formal theories in order to establish testable hypotheses; for our consideration, formal criminological theories offer many suggestions about where crime originates and how it persists. For instance, broad categories of juvenile justice policy might be founded on developmental/life course theories of crime onset.

Theories of Crime

In policy analysis however, “theory” could simply represent the conceptual logic that underlies how the program is intended function similar to a flowchart that links the program’s content to its expected outcomes. A program for educating DUI offenders might theorize that recidivism could be reduced by explaining the costs and consequences of driving while impaired.

For Paper #2, locate two academic journal articles from peer-reviewed criminology/criminal justice journals that evaluate a policy or program. Your objective is to describe how theory and policy are linked in both examples:

First, identify the policy or program featured in each article. What type of crime is it intended to address? What is the context for the policy or program?

Theories of Crime

Second discuss how the program or policy is theorized to work. ,What is the mechanism by which it achieves its objectives?, Is the policy or program based on a formal criminological theory? Describe it briefly.,

Third what are the major findings from the articles? Did the policies/programs show an effect?,

Lastly in light of the findings from the articles, did the theories upon which your example policies/programs were based appear sound?, In other words: does it appear that the policies/programs were appropriately conceptualized? Why or why not?

Theories of Crime

Remember, the purpose of this short paper is to discuss theory. Your paper will be graded, therefore, based on your written linkage between policy/program theory and evaluation. It is not necessary to provide extensive detail about the programming that goes beyond the major objectives listed above. Keep your writing focused on theoretical elements in your chosen examples.

Utilize information from your two example articles to help support your points, citing the original work as needed. Throughout your paper, you may find it helpful to use compare and contrast statements in order to show similarity or differences in the two example articles you select. Also, remember to provide APA-style citations for your source articles, where appropriate.

Professional Presentation: Addressing Healthcare Disparities in a Particular Population

For this Competency Assessment, you will prepare a PowerPoint presentation to educate professionals in your healthcare field on healthcare disparities experienced by vulnerable populations, with attention to one particular population that you choose and with interventions you recommend to address healthcare disparities and improve health equity and outcomes for the focus group.

Healthcare Disparities

To Prepare:

  • Review the outline of required content under “To Complete Your Competency Assessment.” Keep in mind that the purpose of your presentation is to educate fellow professionals in your particular healthcare field. You will begin with a general review of the social determinants of health, common healthcare disparities, and common causes of those disparities. Then, you will move to the example of a specific population to bring to the attention of your fellow professionals.
  • Identify the focus population. This may be a group in your community or region and/or a population of particular interest to your professional role. The focus population should be a vulnerable group based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, or other determining factor(s). Be sure to choose a population for which you can find reliable information.
  • Gather key data about the population to create a brief profile of this group.
  • Identify one (1) or two (2) major healthcare disparities experienced by the focus population to address in your presentation. Concentrate on healthcare disparities that are having the greatest impact on this group and for which you can recommend interventions.
  • Explain causes of these healthcare disparities at the societal level, such as issues of economics, education, environment, and social views, including racism and other types of prejudice. Look for examples of the impact on the focus group in terms of patient/client experience and quality care.
  • Identify up to three (3) specific interventions that could reduce or remove one (1) or more of the major healthcare disparities for your focus population. Provide examples of how the interventions can improve health equity and outcomes for the focus group.
  • To promote advocacy, consider how to conclude your presentation with a call to fellow professionals to address healthcare disparities.
  • Access the PowerPoint template to prepare your presentation. Review the following resources for support in developing your presentation and adding audio narration:
  • Note: There is no specified time limit for your narrated presentation. However, keep your audience’s interest and attention in mind. Refer to the professional presentation skills in the rubric for guidance.

To Complete Your Competency Assessment

Create a PowerPoint presentation of 9–11 slides with narration, plus title and reference slides, to include the following:

  • Explain how social determinants of health influence individual healthcare experiences and perspectives.,
  • Describe common examples of healthcare disparities.,
  • Describe societal influences that cause common healthcare disparities.,
  • Identify a specific vulnerable population—based on race ethnicity gender sexuality disability or other determining factor(s)—who experiences healthcare disparity. ,Provide a brief profile of this group based on the social determinants of health.,
  • Analyze causes of one (1) or two (2) major healthcare disparities experienced by the focus group.,
  • For each major healthcare disparity experienced by the focus group, explain the impact on patient/client experience and care.,
  • For each major healthcare disparity experienced by the focus group explain up to three (3) recommended interventions.,
  • Explain how the recommended intervention(s) can improve health equity and outcomes for the focus group.,
  • Conclude with a call for advocacy to motivate your professional audience to address healthcare disparities for other vulnerable populations.
