Grammar and Code Switching. As we discussed earlier, grammar is sometimes conditional. In other words, what might be considered appropriate grammar and language for one scenario will not be effective or even acceptable in another. This ability to alter between various languages, dialects, and/or grammars, depending on the situation, is known as code-switching. In order to explore the concept of code-switching further, read the NPR article “How Code-Switching Explains The World”Links to an external site. and respond to the questions below.

Grammar and Code Switching

What are some of the reasons why people might find themselves code-switching? Be specific, providing a particular example from the article in order to help you reinforce your claim. What are the benefits of adopting a variety of languages and/or voices for different scenarios? How might this help someone to better navigate the world and/or various social situations? Are there any drawbacks to the phenomenon of code-switching? In other words, could people experience prejudice and/or other obstacles by displaying this adaptation? Lastly, describe a scenario that required (or still requires) you to code-switch. Why do you find it necessary to code-switch for this particular scenario? Have you ever experienced any problems and/or difficulties because of this? Please answer the questions in MLA format, and make sure to include a tittle.

Crime and Society. Prior to beginning work on this assignment, watch Crimes of the Powerful, available through the Films on Demand database in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library. Additionally, read Chapters 5 and 6 from the textbook. Our justice system tends to focus on street crime, often ignoring much more significant problems such as white-collar, corporate, and state crime. The video also discusses euthanasia, although the point of this reference is to illustrate how the law can be used as a tool for social change. The video also discusses moral values with a focus on media coverage of harm to children. Laws have changed in direct response to these incidents and the resulting media coverage. In effect, this coverage becomes an engine for social change. The video ends with a discussion of crime theory, reminding us that many criminological theories fall short when applied to people with wealth and high status. Write a paper discussing the myths and realities of crime.

Crime and Society

Imagine asking 100 strangers to describe a criminal. Predict whether those descriptions would be likely to focus on street criminals, or the variety of topics covered in the Crimes of the Powerful. Evaluate how society defines crime. Do not provide a definition – instead, explain how the definition is reached. Present a clear statement about a particular crime, something we know to be absolutely true. Crime and Society. Illustrate how we know that this is an accurate statement. Present an example of a widely-held myth or misconception about crime and society. Determine how we know that this is a myth. Explain why this myth is so difficult to abandon. Joanna Case Study. Joanna, a psychiatrist, has a busy clinical practice. She is widely recognized as a leader in reducing the number of psychotic episodes that patients with schizophrenia experience. Her treatment modalities are largely informed by her research. She has performed numerous clinical trial studies combining various antipsychotic and other medications to achieve longer intervals without episodes. She has cultivated a trusting relationship with her patients as many have seen her for more than five years as she has provide hope and relief to a great number of them.

Joanna is enrolling participants into a randomized placebo-controlled study with a promising new drug to treat schizophrenia. Although two other psychiatrists in her practice are referring patients to the study, she also decides to offer the protocol to patients in her practice that meet the inclusion criteria.

Joanna Case Study

As part of the consent process, she explains to patients that there is a 50-50 chance whether they are placed in the group receiving the investigational drug or in the group that receives the placebo (sugar pill). She tells them that those who are given placebos will not be offered standard-of-care medicine so that important drug-placebo differences can be identified. Joanna Case Study. Joanna also tells them that rational decision-making does not seem to be affected during short periods of medication-free intervals, according to the most recent research. She does acknowledge that studies have had mixed results about the increased risk of suicidality, however.

One of Joanna’s patients, a potential participant named Duncan, asks how long the study is supposed to last. Joanna knows that Duncan has failed other attempts of reducing the length and severity of his schizophrenic episodes. She also believes that he may be a good candidate for the study—as long as he’s not in the placebo group.  There’s no guarantee that he’ll receive the treatment, or do well on it. If he doesn’t enroll, then his clinical care will go on uninterrupted. If he does enroll, this new experimental drug may be his best shot at receiving an effective treatment so that he can lead a more normal life.

Joanna Case Study. Joanna asks if Duncan is interested. Duncan responds, “Whatever you think is best. You’re the doc.” Use APA referencing style.

Questions:

  1. How many different kinds of conflicts of interest does Joanna have?
  2. How concerned should she be that her patient(s) might not grasp the risks of participating in a drug trial?
  3. In your own words, what is a therapeutic misconception?
  4. What do you think motivates patients like Duncan to respond “Whatever you think is best”?
  5. Should clinical researchers be allowed to enroll their own patients in a study?

Constructivist and Post-Positivist Views. After reviewing this week’s resources, explain, in your own words, the differences between constructivist and post-positivist approaches to research. In particular, include the following in your written analysis: Identify and document constructivist’s views. Identify and document post-positivist’s views. Provide an example of a study (other than that given by Mertens) that uses a constructivist approach. (You can use examples from a study you have come across in previous courses). Provide an example (other than that given by Mertens) that uses a post-positivist approach. (You can use an example of a study you have come across in previous courses). Reflect on these two approaches. Do you think the approaches are antagonistic (i.e., you can only believe in doing research one way and not the other) or are the approaches just different ways of answering different research questions? There is no right or wrong answer for this.

Sample Paragraph for Clinical Paper-I (Contemplation)

Jack was backing out of his driveway one night, after having consumed a six-pack of beer. He was angry when he realized there was no more vodka in the house, so he got in his car and zoomed down his driveway in reverse. Health Behavior Journal. He suddenly heard a sickening thud against the back bumper. He slammed on his brakes and raced around to the back of his car. He saw his dog Cocoa, lying unconscious. Jack and his wife, Janelle, brought their dog to the emergency vet, and to their relief, their dog survived the accident.

Health Behavior Journal. The accident jarred Jack into reality; he realized, for the first time, that his drinking is a problem, and he has hurt his family and many other people with his drinking. He does not rush to sign up for AA, however; he still is not sure he wants to stop drinking. This leads to many more arguments between him and Janelle, with Janelle tearfully asking, “Don’t you care about us, Jack? You almost killed Cocoa. It could have been one of our children at the end of that driveway. Why won’t you stop drinking?” She doesn’t understand that Jack loves his family but is afraid to stop drinking, since he has been dependent on alcohol since he was 18. He turns to alcohol whenever he is stressed or depressed, and when he drinks, it feels as though he has wrapped a warm blanket around himself. He is afraid he will feel lost without alcohol, not knowing how else to cope with the stress in his life. Jack continues to drink, but he feels nothing but self-loathing every time he picks up a can of beer, telling himself he is nothing but a “weak-willed loser”. He even cried himself to sleep last night. Use APA referencing style.

Technology – Students with Disabilities. For this assignment, you have been assigned a student named Victor. For Victor, you must identify current and emerging assistive technologies to enable him to participate in high-quality communication interactions and achieve his educational goals. In addition, you will need to provide an adequate rationale for the use of this technology by describing how it will assist the student with disabilities to overcome his learning barriers to meet his/her educational goals.

For Victor, you are to do the following: Identify 6 technologies in a numbered fashion, following the directions for the type of technologies that must be included, and include the information using the bolded headings. You must include the bolded headings in your document followed by your response. Technology – Students with Disabilities. You MUST carefully review your document for quality of writing, use of professional language, and writing mechanics. You must be sure to include some technologies that cover the learner’s goal. See specifically under the learner the types of technologies you must include.

Technology - Students with Disabilities

When you identify the technology to be used you must include each of the following; Name of Technology and its URL: Include the name of the technology, its URL and a brief description. Type of technology. (e.g., software, online learning tool, app, hardware/device, etc. Technology Description: Briefly describe the technology. Be sure to include the features that would be useful to learning.  Write this well enough so that someone could read it and get an overall understanding of what it is and how it works. Technology – Students with Disabilities. How does this technology help overcome the learning barrier(s) and meet the learning goal(s): You must describe specifically what barrier(s) this technology will help the student overcome and how it will help him/her meet his/her learning goals. This is a critical part of the assignment in that it demonstrates your understanding of the usefulness of the technology.

Profile: Victor, Student aged 12.

Learning needs

Victor has a diagnosis of severe learning disabilities, with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Reading Challenges: He is a reluctant reader and because of this when he has to read to gather information to write his composition papers, he is slow and doesn’t always gather the most important information. Writing Challenges: He finds handwriting difficult. His written work is messy and often illegible with very poor spelling. Beyond his handwriting challenges, he has trouble writing or composing papers, that is, he his poor written expression. Technology – Students with Disabilities. He often writes incomplete sentences, has errors in syntax, grammar, and spelling. He often doesn’t know what is important to write. Sometimes his paragraphs lack a main idea, etc. During writing and composition time, he often becomes withdrawn. He is self-conscious about his difficulties and resists working with the teacher’s aide. He has a history of anxiety and now his school attendance has reduced. Academic performance in comparison to her peers has been falling steadily.

Learning goals

  1. Increase and improve his written expression.
  2. Improve his reading for content to better compose papers.
  3. Increase accuracy and complexity writing, improve legibly and spelling.

Assignment: Identify and present in a numbered fashion 5 technologies to help Victor overcome his learning barriers and meet his learning goals. Be sure to include Software, hardware, and/or Web 2.0 tools, low-tech solutions but not simply websites to find information. There should be technologies to support his reading to help him when composing papers, his handwriting, and his composing papers. Technology – Students with Disabilities. Some technologies could support more than one of the challenges.  You can’t have all the technologies support just one of his challenges (e.g., spelling).  For example, you can’t only have reading support technologies or only compositing support technologies, etc. You must include a variety of technologies.

Important: You must include one technology that the teacher would use to facilitate Victor’s learning.  That is, what technology could the teacher use to teach Victor (and the others in his class) improved reading and/or writing skills. Use APA referencing style.
