Research Study Proposal

Instructions

Research Study Proposal Part 1 (Do this on brain injuries due to combat)

In this class, you will complete a Research Study Proposal. In this hypothetical research study proposal, you will investigate a social-psychological issue of your choice. The Research Study Proposal is divided into three pieces:

Research Study Proposal Part 1 focuses on the global direction of your final proposal. That is, you will be introducing your topic for research. You will need to provide a narrative rationale for why the topic is important enough to research. In so doing, you will need to include research questions, hypotheses, variables, participants, and methodology (i.e., this piece will be expanded in Research Study Proposal Part 3). For more specifics for each, please note the information below.

Research Study Proposal

Requirements: Research Study Proposal Part 1

  • Proposed Topic
  • Describe the study’s topic and focus (1-page minimum).

o This piece would include the statement of the problem and background information. Think of this piece as an introduction.

  • Research Question
  • Develop a narrowly defined research question that clearly outlines what question you are seeking to answer to would add something new to the literature. You can find ideas for this by reviewing the researcher recommendations for future research; this is found at the end of research articles.
  • You should only have a single research question that includes the variables you will be measuring.
  • Hypothesis/Hypotheses
  • This should be a clear answer to your research question and should not be more than a single sentence long.
  • This should include a hypothesis and a null hypothesis (1 sentence for each).
  • Be sure that your null hypothesis is identical to your hypothesis with the exception of the word “NOT” added in.

Research Study Proposal

  • Variables
  • List each of the variables you plan to study in your research. These should be specific and measurable. They must also be clearly stated in your research question.
  • Participants (1/2 page minimum)
  • Describe participant demographics (race, gender, age, religion, SES, area of the country in which they live, etc.).

o Each demographic must be individually explained and justified. A simple “Everyone can participate” will not be sufficient.

o Ensure that your sample will be reflective of the population you wish to study (i.e., population under study) and that you will be able to generalize your results to the overall population you are studying.

  • Present the criteria that will be used to determine inclusion or exclusion from the study.

o What is the process for selecting/recruiting participants?

o What is the rationale for selecting them?

  • Sampling Method
  • Discuss the proposed sampling method and the rationale for selecting it (1-page minimum).
  • Include the number of participants you will have in your sample and a justification as to why you choose that specific number (i.e., this should be developed from and supported by previous research).

Your paper must also:

  • Be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 full pages, size 12 font, Times New Roman, double spaced with 1-inch margins, NOT including the Title and References pages.
  • Be in APA 7th edition format, including a title page and reference page.
  • Incorporate a minimum of five supportive peer-reviewed, scholarly citations and references to support content and conclusions

Article Review Instructions

You will write two article reviews for this course. Each review is worth 15 points. The review should be 1-2 single-spaced pages in a 12-point, Times New Roman font. It is in your best interest to submit your review before it is due so you may check your originality report and correct any spelling and grammatical errors identified by the software program.

The purpose of the review is to provide students knowledge of how research is conducted and reported. The main part of your review needs to include the following information. Please comment on these aspects of the article as part of your review. Provide only the briefest summary of content. What I am interested in is your critique.

Reference. Listed at the top of the paper in APA style.

Introduction. Read the introduction carefully. The introduction should contain:

  • A thorough literature review that establishes the nature of the problem to be addressed in the present study (the literature review is specific to the problem)
  • The literature review is current (generally, articles within the past 5 years)
  • A logical sequence from what we know (the literature review) to what we don’t know (the unanswered questions raised by the review and what this study intended to answer
  • The purpose of the present study
  • The specific hypotheses/research questions to be
  • State the overall purpose of the What was the main theme of the paper?
  • What new ideas or information were communicated in the paper?
  • Why was it important to publish these ideas?

Methods. The methods section has three subsections. The methods sections should contain:

  • The participants and the population they are intended to represent (are they described as well in terms of relevant demographic characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, education level, income level, etc?).
  • The number of participants and how the participants were selected for the study
  • A description of the tools/measures used and research design
  • A detailed description of the procedures of the study including participant instructions and whether incentives were given.

Results. The results section should contain a very thorough summary of results of all analyses. This section should include:

  • Specific demographic characteristics of the sample
  • A thorough narrative description of the results of all statistical tests that addressed specific hypotheses
  • If there are tables and figures, are they also described in the text?
  • If there are tables and figures, can they be interpreted 11stand alone” (this means that they contain sufficient information in the title and footnotes so that a reader can understand what is being presented without having to go back to the text)?

Discussion. The discussion is where the author “wraps up the research”. This section should include:

  • A simple and easy to understand summary of what was found
  • Where the hypotheses supported or refuted?
  • A discussion of how the author’s findings compares to those found in prior research
  • The limitations of the study

The implications of the findings to basic and applied researchers and to practitioners

Article Review Instructions

Critique.

In your opinion, what were the strengths and weaknesses of the paper or document? Be sure to think about your impressions and the reasons for them. listing what the author wrote as limitations is not the same thing as forming your own opinions and justifying them to the reader.

  • Were the findings important to a reader?
  • Were the conclusions valid? Do you agree with the conclusions?
  • If the material was technical, was the technical material innovative?

Conclusion.

Once you provide the main critique of the article, you should include a final paragraph that gives me your overall impression of the study. Was the study worthwhile? Was it well-written and clear to those who may not have as much background in the content area? How does it relate to other weekly readings?

APA Format Review

If you are unfamiliar or a bit “rusty” on your APA format, you may want to use the tutorial available through the APA website which is listed on your syllabus.

SMART Goals PMHNP

For this assignment, you will work on setting goals for yourself using the SMART method. You will find an explanation of this method in the module that will guide you in your goal-setting process. You will list a minimum of five professional goals that you would like to accomplish during the clinical experience in this term. For each goal, you must provide an explanation of how the goal is representative of each of the SMART characteristics: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. Be sure to answer the following questions for each goal summary: Can you measure it? Is it attainable? Is it realistic? What is the time frame you have set for completing that goal?

Format: Each goal summary should be at least 100 words – totaling 500 words for this assignment (added to the speaker notes). The presentation is original work and logically organized, formatted, and cited in the current APA style, including citation of references.  The presentation should consist of 10-15 slides (excluding the introduction and reference page).

SMART Goals PMHNP

SMART Goals PMHNP

SMART Goals Rubric

Specific

To set a specific goal you must answer the 6 Ws:

Who? Who is involved?

What? What would I like to accomplish?

Where? Where is this happening?

When? When do I start/finish?

Which? Identify requirements and constraints

Why? Why am I doing this? Specific reasons, purpose or benefits!

Measurable

Goals may have several short-term and on-going measurements so that you can see how you are doing in your aim to achieve your goal.

A non-measurable goal: I want to learn how to sing.

A measurable goal: I want to learn 5 arias by Friday, November 12th

SMART Goals PMHNP

Achievable/Ambitious

A goal should stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it, and it will need a real commitment

from you. Think about what is achievable and what you want to do.

Relevant

Realistic goals should have you push you, but not break you!

Timely

What is your time frame? Putting an end to your goal, or target dates to work towards, gives you a sense of accomplishment as you move toward achieving your goal. With a time frame comes more commitment to achievement! APA.

Wilkins’ Clinical Practice – Dental Hygienist

Apply information from the chapter and use critical thinking skills to complete the competency exercises. Write responses on paper or create electronic documents to submit your answers.

  1. As you evaluate Mrs. Eltheia Shore, you note that she presents with a significant amount of supragingival, subgingival, gingival, and fissure biofilm. Educate her about the factors that can contribute to biofilm accumulation and the surfaces most commonly affected. Describe the strategies used for the detection of biofilm.
  2. You are providing patient education for Alison Alverez and her 10-year-old son, Juan. Juan has multiple carious lesions, and his mother is very interested in preventing more from occurring. Juan drinks soda daily. He purchases a 32-oz. bottle on his way to school and sips the soda every chance he gets. Juan’s mother remembers hearing something about acids in the mouth and wants to know more about this. Describe your approach to patient education.
  3. Your patient, John Weston, is wondering about calculus formation. He is trying to understand the exact time frame of the process. Help him understand calculus formation by defining pellicle, biofilm, and calculus, and discussing the influencing factors. Make a list or draw a picture that describes calculus formation in terms of minutes, hours, and days.
  4. While scaling in the mandibular right quadrant, you are having varying degrees of difficulty detecting and removing the calculus. Describe the three modes of calculus attachment. Explain how each mode affects detection and removal.

Wilkins' Clinical Practice - Dental Hygienist

Wilkins’ Clinical Practice – Dental Hygienist

  1. Your 1:30 pm. patient, Fawez Sadarage, 47 years old, presents with a stain on all the second and third molars caused by tetracycline. Describe the stain that you might see and list some follow-up questions you will ask Mr. Sadarage. Indicate why you would ask the questions.
  2. The patient in the scenario posed in Question 1 presented with generalized gray-brown stain on the second and third molars. Why weren’t all teeth affected?
  3. At what age do you think the patient took the antibiotic?
  4. Several strategies will help you recognize and identify stains that you observe during the assessment of the oral cavity. Explain the types of stains (color and cause) that can be identified using each of the strategies listed below

Medical history

Questions about industrial occupation

Questions about dietary habits

Dental history

Dental charting (eg, endodontic therapy, restorative materials)

Everyday Ethics

Wilkins’ Clinical Practice – Dental Hygienist

Before completing the following learning exercises, it may also be useful to review the Dental Hygiene Ethics discussion in Chapter 1, the Ethical Applications in the introduction pages for each section in the textbook, as well as the Codes of Ethics in the textbook Appendices.

Robert returned to the dental office of Dr. Taylor after 3 years of working in Northern Quebec, Canada. At the age of 30, Robert was exhibiting signs of early periodontitis with gingival inflammation and moderate subgingival calculus. Susan, the dental hygienist, educated Robert about biofilm and suggested improvements for his personal daily brushing and flossing regimen. After debriding two quadrants with local anesthesia, Susan suggested that rinsing with chlorhexidine for the first week, after brushing before going to bed, would help the healing.

Dr. Taylor agreed with Susan’s recommendation and wrote the prescription. A few days later Robert called to complain about the “awful brown stain on his teeth and horrible taste of the mouth rinse.” He further indicated that he had stopped using the product and wanted to come in and have the stain removed immediately. Training Session Presentation

Ensure you provide speaker notes for each slide to fully address scoring guide criteria.

Training and educating those within an organization who are responsible for implementing and working with changes in organizational policy is a critical step in ensuring that prescribed changes have their intended benefit. A leader in a health care profession must be able to apply effective leadership, management, and educational strategies to ensure that colleagues and subordinates will be prepared to do the work that is asked of them.

As a master’s-level health care practitioner, you may be asked to design training sessions to help ensure the smooth implementation of any number of initiatives in your health care setting. The ability to create an agenda that will ensure your training goals will be met, and will fit into the allotted time, is a valuable skill for preparing colleagues to be successful in their practice.

This assessment offers you an opportunity to develop and implement effective educational strategies.

To help ensure a smooth rollout and implementation of your proposed policy and practice guidelines, design a training session presentation for one of the role groups in the organization that will be responsible for implementation.

Training Session Presentation

Training Session Presentation

Provide a brief summary of your strategies for working with your chosen role group.

Explain the impact of the new policy on the group and the importance of the change to improve quality of care.

Explain how the group is important in implementing your proposed policy and practice guidelines and why you chose this group to pilot your proposal.

Determine appropriate instructional content and explain to the group the learning activities and materials they should expect during the training session.

Prepare an annotated agenda for a two-hour training session.

During this training session, you will want to ensure that the individuals you are training understand the new policy and practice guidelines. You will need them to buy into the importance of the policy in improving the quality of care or outcomes and their key role in successful policy implementation. You must help them acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in implementing the policy and practice guidelines.

Training Session Presentation

As outcomes of this training session, participants are expected to:

Understand the organizational policy and practice guidelines to be implemented.

Understand the importance of the policy to improving quality or outcomes.

Understand that, as a group, they are key to successful implementation.

Possess the necessary knowledge and skills for successful implementation.

The strategy summary and annotated training agenda requirements outlined below correspond to the scoring guide criteria, so be sure to address each main point. Read the performance-level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed. In addition, be sure to note the requirements for document format and length and for supporting evidence.

Summarize evidence-based strategies for working with the role group to obtain their buy-in and prepare them to implement the new policy and apply the associated practice guidelines to their work.

Why will these strategies be effective?

What measures might provide early indications of success?

Explain the impact of the new policy and practice guidelines.

How they will be implemented?

How will they affect the daily work routines and responsibilities of the role group?

Justify the importance of the new policy and practice guidelines with regard to improving the quality of care or outcomes related to the role group’s work.

Training Session Presentation

How will the policy and guidelines help improve the quality of care or outcomes?

Explain the role group’s importance in implementing the new policy and practice guidelines.

Why is the work and buy-in of the role group important for successful implementation?

How could you help the group feel empowered by their involvement during implementation?

Determine appropriate and effective instructional content, learning activities, and materials for the training session.

How will each proposed activity on your agenda support learning and skill development?

Can you complete the training within the allotted two hours?

Deliver a persuasive, coherent, and effective audiovisual presentation.

Be sure that the information and arguments you present are aligned with the needs of your audience.

Review the organization of your slides for clarity.

Proofread your slides to minimize errors that could distract the audience or make your message more difficult to understand.

There are two parts to this assignment, each with a different due date. Part I is your contributions to the collaborative Google Slides document. Part II is the reflection writing you will submit.

Part I: Collaboration Assignment Contributions

This assignment will be completed using a collaborative set of Google slides (the link to the slides is below). ,Although you are adding to the same set of slides, you are working individually on the assignment when it is convenient for you to do so. This is not a group assignment, but rather a collective effort to compile resources that can help you throughout the semester.

As noted above you and your classmates will be using a shared Google Slides document to create a repository of helpful resources for you all to reference throughout the semester.,

1. Research Phase 1: Start by doing some web-based research on best practices for preparing for and presenting speeches. This can include tips on how to manage time ways to address procrastination how often to practice ways to practice etc. ,You can choose strategies, advice and best practices that you feel are beneficial to your own process for preparing and presenting speeches.

2. Research Phase 2: Consider what effect if any speaking in public has on you personally., This includes both physical (e.g., shaky voice, red face, pacing, poor eye contact) to emotional (e.g., negative self-talk, self-sabotage, avoidance). Conduct a web-based search to find tips and techniques to help mitigate these physical and/or emotional side effects.

Collaborative Google Slides

3. Google Slide Contribution: Using however many slides you deem appropriate and in whatever format and font you think is best, add the following information to the Class Collaboration Google Slides Document

Links to an external site. The PowerPoint  Download PowerPointOpen this document with ReadSpeaker docReaderI provided in this week’s learning materials can act as an example of how you can structure your information in the Google Slides document.

  • Provide a minimum of (3) overall best practices with some detail about each
    • Cite the websites you retrieved this information from using the APA format at the bottom of the slide it appears.
  • List a minimum of (3) side effects (emotional or physical) you experience either during or at the thought of speaking in public. For each of the (3) emotional and/or physical side effects you list, include at least (2) remedies, strategies, and/or best practices to reduce the impact each effect has on you or your speech.
    • Cite the websites you retrieved this information from using the APA format at the bottom of the slide it appears.
  • You must cite a total of (3) websites for this assignment. While three is the minimum, I encourage the use and citation of additional websites.
  • Place your first and last name on each of your slides.
  • Do not edit or delete others’ slides.
  • Try to limit replicating / duplicating advice provided by others.

The prevalence of arthritis in the United States is 1 in 100,000 children. However, 1 in 10 children in Lyme, Connecticut, developed arthritis between June and September 1973. Allen Steere, a rheumatologist at Yale University, investigated the cases in Lyme and found that 25% of the patients remembered having a skin rash during their arthritic episode and that the disease was treatable with penicillin. Steere concluded that this was a new infectious disease and did not have an environmental, genetic, or immunologic cause.
  1. What was the factor that caused Steere to reach his conclusion?,
  2. What is the disease?,
  3. Why was the disease more prevalent between June and September?,

2)  Newborn babies are tested for phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited disease. Individuals with this disease are missing an enzyme to convert phenylalanine (Phe) to tyrosine; the resulting accumulation of Phe can cause mental retardation, brain damage, and seizures. The Guthrie test for PKU involves culturing Bacillus subtilis, which requires Phe to grow. The bacteria are grown on media with a drop of the baby’s blood.
