Positive Classroom Behavior Strategies

Take some time now to answer the following questions. Please note that the IRIS Center does not collect your Assessment responses. If this is a course assignment, you should turn them in to your professor using whatever method he or she requires. If you have trouble answering any of the questions, go back and review the Perspectives & Resources pages in this module.

Positive Classroom Behavior Strategies

  1. Identify and briefly discuss two things educators should understand about student behavior.
  2. Briefly describe the ABC model.
  3. Identify and briefly discuss the two ways in which antecedents influence student behavior.
  4. You learned about three types of consequences.
    1. List the three types of consequences and briefly explain how each type can be used to change student behavior. Positive Classroom Behavior Strategies
    2. Explain why using reinforcement should be an educator’s primary strategy for changing behavior in the classroom. Positive Classroom Behavior Strategies
  5. Read the scenario below and analyze the student’s behavior in relation to the reinforcement.Cooper is a very social fifth grader who enjoys interacting with his peers and teachers. For the most part, Cooper positively engages in various class activities. However, when the teacher poses questions to the class, he frequently calls out, interrupts, and speaks over his classmates—even after receiving multiple reminders to raise his hand and wait patiently. When Cooper acts out the teacher quickly acknowledges his response before asking the student who was called on to repeat the answer.,
    1. Using the table below identify Cooper’s behavior as well as the antecedent and consequence that may be influencing his behavior. Antecedent Behavior Consequence .,
    2. Discuss the features of reinforcement that you think are increasing the likelihood of Cooper’s disruptive behavior.,
    3. Describe how the teacher can adjust the reinforcement to assist Cooper in unlearning the disruptive behavior and learning the desired behavior. (i.e. raising his hand and waiting patiently).,
    4. Describe at least two ways in which the teacher could determine that Cooper’s desired behavior has been generalized.,

Organizational Response Data Breach Crisis

Scenario:
Our company, TechNova Solutions, a mid-sized IT services provider, has experienced a major data breach compromising sensitive client information. News of the breach has reached media outlets, and clients are demanding transparency and immediate action.

Data Breach Crisis

Organizational Response:
Drawing on Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) by Coombs, our first response involves categorizing the crisis as a preventable crisis, given that it stems from internal system vulnerabilities. This classification requires us to adopt a rebuild strategy—apologizing sincerely and offering compensation where appropriate.

1. Immediate Communication:
Within the first 24 hours, the CEO will issue a public statement accepting responsibility, detailing what is known about the breach, and outlining immediate actions taken. This aligns with Stakeholder Theory (Freeman, 1984), ensuring that all stakeholders—clients, employees, regulators—are prioritized and engaged.

2. Crisis Management Team Activation:
A cross-functional Crisis Response Team (CRT) has been activated. Guided by Contingency Theory, which supports flexible approaches depending on the situation, the CRT includes representatives from IT, Legal, Communications, and HR to ensure a coordinated response.

3. Transparency and Accountability:
We are engaging a third-party cybersecurity firm to conduct a full audit and will release their findings publicly. Drawing from Institutional Theory, this step demonstrates compliance with industry norms and regulatory expectations, rebuilding trust through legitimacy.

4. Internal Support and Culture Reinforcement:
To support our internal community, we’re hosting open forums, offering counseling, and reinforcing a culture of transparency and learning. According to Transformational Leadership Theory, empowering and engaging staff during a crisis fosters resilience and commitment.

5. Long-term Strategy and Learning:
We will adopt High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles by institutionalizing continuous learning, improving risk management protocols, and developing a proactive incident response framework. Training and simulations will become quarterly practices to prevent recurrence.

Conclusion:
This crisis, though damaging, presents a strategic inflection point. By responding with honesty, speed, and strategic foresight—guided by SCCT, Stakeholder Theory, and Transformational Leadership—we aim not only to restore trust but emerge as a more resilient, transparent, and responsible organization.

Develop a 2–4 page Policy Proposal that seeks to improve the outcomes for your chosen healthcare issue and target population.

Collapse All

Introduction

Note: Each assessment in this course builds on the work you completed in the previous assessment. Therefore, you must complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Cost and access to care continue to be main concerns for patients and providers. As technology improves our ability to care for and improve outcomes in patients with chronic and complex illnesses, questions of cost and access become increasingly important. As a master’s-prepared nurse, you must be able to develop policies that will ensure the delivery of care that is effective and can be provided in an ethical and equitable manner.

Policy Proposal

Professional Context

As a master’s-prepared nurse, you have a valuable viewpoint and voice with which to advocate for policy developments. As a nurse leader and healthcare practitioner, often on the front lines of helping individuals and populations, you are able to articulate and advocate for the patient more than any other professional group in healthcare. This is especially true of populations that may be underserved, underrepresented, or are otherwise lacking a voice. By advocating for and developing policies, you are able to help drive improvements in outcomes for specific populations. The policies you advocate for could be internal ones (just within a specific department or healt care setting) that ensure quality care and compliance. Or they could be external policies (local, state, or federal) that may have more wide-ranging effects on best practices and regulations.

Scenario

The analysis of position papers that your interdisciplinary team presented to the committee has convinced them that it would be worth the time and effort to develop a new policy to address your specific issue in the target population. To that end, your interdisciplinary team has been asked to submit a policy proposal that outlines a specific approach to improving the outcomes for your target population that’s negatively impacted by health inequity. This proposal should be supported by evidence and best practices that illustrate why the specific approaches are likely to be successful. Additionally, you have been asked to address the ways in which applying your policy to interdisciplinary teams could lead to efficiency or effectiveness gains.

This assessment will build upon your previous Analysis of Position Papers for Vulnerable Populations assessment. If, for some reason, you wish to change your specific issue or target population, contact your faculty for approval.

Instructions

For this assessment, you will develop a policy proposal that seeks to improve the outcomes for your chosen healthcare issue and target population. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your assessment submission addresses all of them. You may also want to read the Biopsychosocial Population Health Policy Proposal Scoring Guide and Guiding Questions: Biopsychosocial Population Health Policy Proposal [PDF] to better understand how each grading criterion will be assessed.

  • Propose a policy and guidelines that will lead to improved outcomes and quality of care for a specific issue in a target population negatively impacted by health inequity.
  • Advocate the need for a proposed policy in the context of current outcomes and quality of care for a specific issue in a target population negatively impacted by health inequity.
  • Analyze the potential for an interdisciplinary approach to implementing a proposed policy to increase the efficiency or effectiveness of the care setting to achieve high-quality outcomes.
  • Communicate proposal in a professional and persuasive manner, writing content clearly and logically with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Integrate relevant sources to support assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.

Example assessment: You may use the Assessment 2 Example [PDF] to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like.

Submission Requirements

  • Length of proposal:2–4 double-spaced, typed pages, not including title page or reference list. Your proposal should be succinct yet substantive. No abstract is required.
  • Number of references:Cite a minimum of 3–5 sources of scholarly or professional evidence that support the relevance of or need for your policy, as well as interdisciplinary considerations. Resources should be no more than five years old.
  • APA formatting:Use the APA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX] to help you in writing and formatting your proposal.

Competencies Measured

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Design evidence-based advanced nursing care for achieving high-quality population outcomes.,
    • Propose a policy and guidelines that will lead to improved outcomes and quality of care for a specific issue in a target population negatively impacted by health inequity.,
  • Competency 2: Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of interdisciplinary interventions in achieving desired population health outcomes.,
    • Analyze the potential for an interdisciplinary approach to implementing a proposed policy to increase the efficiency or effectiveness of the care setting to achieve high-quality outcomes.,
  • Competency 3: Analyze population health outcomes through the lens of social justice structural racism, or health inequity and their implications for health policy advocacy.,
    • Advocate the need for a proposed policy in the context of current outcomes and quality of care for a specific issue in a target population negatively impacted by health inequity.,
  • Competency 4: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.

The Major Group Project assignment constitutes 12% of your grade.

All work you submit for this class should be written in clear prose, meaning that your comments should be comprised in complete, lucid sentences using proper syntax, spelling, and grammar. If you do not take your work seriously, then neither will others. All facts, numbers, statistics, etc. must be cited, as well as any idea that did not originate with you. Using the work of other writers without proper attribution is considered plagiarism, and will result in disciplinary action.

Scarcity Morality and Economic Efficiency

The members of Groups were pre-determined at the start of the class. Within your team the Professor selected one or more member(s) to be the Leader(s) of your Team. Thereafter, the project starts out by having students structure their own team and coming to a consensus as to whom will handle a certain facet of the Project.

Please note that there is one grade for each Team Project paper. More importantly, the grade posted for each member of the respective group is based upon the Team grade and the individual student’s participation on the Project. Too often in Group projects, you have only a few who do most of the Work. Each Group Team member will post an Evaluation Report detailing the efforts or lack thereof for each member. See Assignment: Groupwork Peer Evaluation.

During this age of isolationism, it has become increasingly apparent that a few wish to go it alone and not to interact with others.  Social skills need to be honed in order to survive the real world of Business.  Some of the best outcomes in the corporate and business environments are developed by teams/boards/panels/task force, etc. Remember, in the counsel of many, there is wisdom; and not only wisdom but making what may seem a daunting task and turning it into an enjoyable experience. In order to prepare for this experience, you will be partaking in Group Projects in this course.

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Prov. 11 14, KJV).
