Human Intelligence vs Computers

In this module, we explore intelligence. More specifically, we engage with theories on intelligence and question whether human intelligence can be found in computers. For your initial post, review the video The Turing Test: Can a Computer Pass for a Human?—Alex Gendler and answer the following questions: Is Turing’s test the right way to approach the idea of intelligence? In other words, if you have a conversation with a computer and you believe that you are talking with a human, would that computer be intelligent? Why or why not?

How are human thinking and machine computing similar in function of memory? How are they different?

Do you think it’s possible for computers to ever think or be as intelligent as humans? Why or why not?

How do either of the concepts of human intelligence or artificial intelligence apply to any of the following programmatic course themes:

Self-care

Social justice

Emotional intelligence

Career connections

Ethics

Children Consumerism

According to the film Consuming KidsLinks to an external site., children’s consumption levels are rising at an alarming rate. Respond to the discussion forum by answering the following questions: What impact will rampant consumerism have on children’s well-being and on society as a whole? Is there a reason for concern?  Do you agree that we have become a nation that places a lower priority on teaching our children how to thrive socially, intellectually, even spiritually, than on training them to consume? Explain why or why not. Finally, what are some ways that a less commercial childhood experience can be constructed?

Cyber Security Encryption

An unsecured network poses a risk of internal and external compromises. Users in human resources (HR) typically transmit sensitive information across the network. The network should encrypt HR data in transit. Using the configurations and topology you added to the WLAN Configuration Design Template in Week 3, add security and segregate internal traffic.

Secure the network to:

    • Minimize the risk of intrusions
    • Identify attempted intrusions
    • Limit visibility of HR traffic on the network

Modify the WLAN Configuration Design Template to include:

    • Configuration changes to the existing devices
    • Introduction of other devices required to meet security objectives

Cyber Security Encryption

Cyber Security Encryption

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation for management to explain from a security standpoint the changes you will make and the reasons for those changes. Ensure you do the following in the presentation:

    • Describe basic security concerns as they relate to wireless networks.
    • Assess the security vulnerabilities, including active protocols, to the unsecured network.
    • Describe your selection of devices added to the network and their role in meeting the security needs of the network to include a justification of the WIPS or WIDS and encryption method selection.
    • Determine how new devices changed the network design and affected configuration settings to include sensors used to monitor the network.
    • Provide a rationale for your choices.

Cyber Security Encryption

Note: Other applications like Adobe Spark, Microsoft Sway, or Microsoft Office Mix can be used instead of Microsoft PowerPoint. Create a “media-rich” presentation by including voice-overs, graphics, interaction, and other techniques to create a dynamic multimedia presentation. Be sure to include supporting images and appropriate backgrounds and styles. All references must be attributed, cited appropriately throughout the document, and adhere to APA guidelines. Do not copy images unless author permission is obtained or copyright-free images are used. Format any citations according to APA guidelines.

Pharmacy and Dietetics Careers

The lecture from our registered dietician touched on the point that a dietician and a nutritionist are very different in terms of their training and educational background. More specifically anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, there is no formal license or standard certification process for this designation.  However, as you now know, the path to become a registered dietician is much more complicated and comes with extensive educational, training and licensure/certification requirements.  Most people are surprised to find this out!

Pharmacy and Dietetics Careers

Pharmacy and Dietetics Careers

I’d like you to reflect on the difference and address each of the following questions:

(a) Did this information surprise you or did you already know the difference between the two designations?

(b) Have you or someone close to you had any personal experience with a nutritionist that you now question?

(c) Will you look more closely at what kind of professional endorses the supplements, vitamins, etc. that you consider taking? Feel free to post any other thoughts related to this topic. Responses may be only one paragraph, but no more than two.

Writing Nursing Advocacy Letter

  1. Choose a topic that interests you.
  2. If you are unsure what to advocate for or against, look at professional organizations for inspiration:
    1. APHA
    2. ANA
    3. Maryland Public Health Association
  3. Look for advocacy groups that are working on the issue. We don’t have to recreate the wheel.  See what strategies the advocacy groups are supporting. For example: Brady and Gifford non-profits focus on gun policy.
  4. Decide if you want to make change within an agency, at the local, state or federal level. Find the decision maker appropriate to that level. Click here to find your elected official.
  5. If you are writing to a legislator, look at that person’s website to see their position on the issue. Please do not ‘preach to the choir’—that is, if they already support the issue, it does no good to throw more facts at them.

  1. If you are addressing a national issue, and your legislator aligns with your proposed action, consider looking at the committee that would hear a bill about your issue.
    1. If there is a proposed bill that has not been active, you can ask the chair of the committee to bring it back up in committee.
    2. Click here to check for federal bills.
  2. If you are addressing a state issue, the Maryland General Assembly meets January- April of each year.
    1. You can see if state bill on your issue was unsuccessful in 2018, and ask your legislator to re-introduce it in 2019.
    2. Click here to check for state bills.
  3. For evidence to support your proposed action, use the One Search through HS/HSL for the broadest results. If you are still having trouble finding articles, the premier journal for public health research is called The Nation’s Health.

Writing Nursing Advocacy Letter

  1. Reminders from the rubric:
    1. Include your ‘Ask’ clearly and concisely in the first paragraph. In busy offices, staff may not read the entire letter.
    2. In the same vein, keep the letter one page. References can be on a second page.
    3. Include your credentials. All of you are BSN Candidates (and add whatever other credentials you have). This adds a professional weight to your voice. Use APA referencing style.

Case Study – Chief Complaint Constipation

History and Present Illness:

Marie, A 58-year-old woman with a complicated history which includes chronic low back pain, bipolar disorder, mixed anxiety, and depressive disorder presents to her PCP, a PA, complaining of constipation for several months. She reports her constipation has been intermittent and become progressively worse over the past few weeks. Currently, she reports her bowel movements occurring about once every 4 days; she describes her stools as hard and painful and she occasionally notes bright red blood on the toilet paper after she wipes. She does not feel she successful in completely evacuating her bowels. She denies melena, abdominal pain, bloating or excessive gas, loose stools, or fecal incontinence. She admits she is fearful of taking medications and has not tried any over-the-counter treatments for fear of side effects. She denies any changes in her regular medications and no short-acting narcotics for breakthrough pain. She endorses a regular diet (lean protein, fruits/vegetables, grains) without changes; she does however admit to poor water intake, about 20 ounces daily; she denies caffeine or alcohol use. She confirms her stress level has not increased; she admits to daily anxiety that limits her activities but reports she feels her anxiety is at baseline. She denies ever having had a colonoscopy due to anxiety about the procedure and potential outcomes. She reports that her chronic low back pain has been stable for the past 6 years on her current medication regimen; she has been on the same dose of extended-release morphine sulfate for the past 4 years. She fears discontinuing morphine sulfate will result in an exacerbation of her back pain. She denies exercising, attending physical therapy or being followed by a pain management specialist.
