Population Health Problem Solution

Introduction
In your first three assessments, you applied new knowledge and insight gleaned from
the literature, from organizational data, and from direct consultation with the patient,
family, or group (and perhaps with subject matter and industry experts) to your
assessment of the problem. You’ve examined the problem from the perspectives of
leadership, collaboration, communication, change management, policy, quality of care,
patient safety, costs to the system and individual, technology, care coordination, and
community resources. Now it’s time to turn your attention to proposing an intervention

Plato or Aristotle Philosophical Notion

  • drill down into one section or set of sections covering a topic and explain what you feel the reader should be getting from the words of Aristotle. Also, elaborate on whether you see his description, theory, or conception as tenable in today’s world.
  • For example, in Book II, sections 5-7 are considered together to offer a definition of moral virtue. Note that you may need to find an edition that has a proper outline or take your best guess on what sections go together to detail some concept.
  • On the Soul By Aristotle Book 2

Plato or Aristotle Philosophical Notion

Writing Assignment

  • Identify a film that, through a plot line, scene, or a section of dialogue, effectively illustrates a key philosophical notion of either Plato or Aristotle. For example, your film might illustrate class structure, notions of truth, constructs of justice – virtually any philosophical school of thought or philosophical idea discussed by either Plato or Aristotle. Once you’ve identified your film you should
    • Give a brief synopsis of the movie.
    • Indicate clearly the notion you’re exploring and how the film supports that idea/belief of either Plato or Aristotle. Then, consider how this same belief now plays out in today’s society.
    • Be sure to use passages from one or more dialogues to backup your assertions.

Plato or Aristotle Philosophical Notion

  • The Details
    • The paper is to be no less than 1100 words, not counting the works cited page.
    • You should support your discussion by engaging reliable scholarly sources. Use A minimum of three reliable resources in addition to the film you’ve selected.
    • Your paper is to be completed using MLA or APA formatting. This includes in-text citations and a Works Cited/References page. If you choose to use APA, be consistent and include a proper cover page.

A Few Examples

Plato or Aristotle Philosophical Notion

  • To get you started, here are a few movies to consider:
    • “The Croods” – a cave family that survives because of a sheltered life – you will see much of Plato’s “The Republic” as the story develops. In this you will see the theme of justice government and just man.,
    • “Man of Steel” – Superman – you will once again see much of Plato’s “The Republic” as the story develops. In this you will see the theme of justice government and just man,.
    • “The Matrix” movies – Plato’s allegory of the cave in the movies along with Socrates and the Oracle of Delphi.,
    • Other suggestions: Any movie that depicts a class system and/or extreme censorship to maintain order or that “reality” is beyond what we see for Plato.,
    • Any movie depicting the benefits of being a virtuous person or that there is nothing beyond what we can see as reality for Aristotle.,

Here is a link to more movie ideas if you are seeking more choices. Keep in mind all may not be related to Plato or Aristotle: https://mubi.com/lists/essential

LBT Health and Social Context

Lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LBT) individuals face unique challenges related to gender, sexuality, health care, and social inclusion. Their experiences are shaped by societal norms, political climates, and structural inequities that affect their well-being. Understanding gender and sexuality concepts, the social and political context, social determinants of health, barriers to health care, and health disparities is crucial for addressing the needs of this population and improving health outcomes.

LBT Health and Social Context

Gender and Sexuality Concepts

Gender and sexuality are complex constructs that influence identity, relationships, and societal roles. Gender identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of being male, female, both, neither, or somewhere along the gender spectrum, while gender expression relates to how individuals present their gender through clothing, behavior, and mannerisms. Transgender individuals experience a gender identity that differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, while cisgender individuals align with their assigned sex.

LBT Health and Social Context

Sexual orientation, which is distinct from gender identity, describes a person’s enduring pattern of romantic or sexual attraction. Lesbian individuals are women who are romantically or sexually attracted to other women, while bisexual individuals experience attraction to both their own gender and other genders. In addition to these identities, some individuals do not identify strictly as male or female but instead as non-binary, gender fluid, or genderqueer. These identities challenge traditional gender norms and exist along a broad spectrum.

Social and Political Context

LBT individuals exist within a broader social and political landscape that shapes their access to rights, protections, and opportunities. In some countries, they benefit from anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality, and legal recognition of gender identity. However, in many places, laws criminalize same-sex relationships, restrict gender-affirming care, or fail to provide protections against workplace and healthcare discrimination.

Homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia contribute to social isolation, mental health struggles, and economic instability. Many LBT individuals face family rejection, which increases risks of homelessness and financial insecurity. The political climate also affects access to healthcare. In regions with conservative policies, gender-affirming care and reproductive health services for LBT individuals may be restricted or banned. Public health initiatives that do not explicitly include LBT individuals contribute to health disparities and reduced health-seeking behavior.

Social Determinants of Health Affecting Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. Economic stability plays a significant role, as LBT individuals, particularly transgender people, experience higher unemployment rates, wage gaps, and workplace discrimination. A lack of financial security can lead to housing instability and food insecurity, negatively affecting health. In the education sector, bias in institutions, bullying, harassment, and the absence of LBT-inclusive curriculums contribute to lower academic achievement and school dropouts.

LBT Health and Social Context

Healthcare accessibility is another pressing issue, as many medical professionals lack training in LBT health needs, leading to subpar care or outright denial of treatment. The fear of discrimination prevents individuals from seeking necessary medical services. Social support is also a crucial factor in well-being. Family rejection and lack of affirming networks increase rates of mental health issues, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation. LBT individuals benefit from inclusive social environments that promote resilience.

Safe and inclusive housing remains a significant concern, particularly for transgender individuals who face high rates of homelessness and housing discrimination. Limited access to safe shelters and gender-inclusive housing options increases vulnerability to violence and poor health outcomes.

Barriers to Health Care

LBT individuals face systemic barriers that reduce access to quality health care services. One major obstacle is the lack of provider knowledge and training. Many healthcare professionals receive little or no education on LBT health concerns, leading to misdiagnosis, inappropriate care, or outright bias. Some providers refuse to offer services, particularly for gender-affirming treatments.

Discrimination and stigma in healthcare settings further discourage LBT individuals from seeking medical care. Many report negative experiences such as verbal harassment, misgendering, or denial of services. These experiences contribute to a reluctance to seek preventative care, which results in poorer health outcomes over time. Financial barriers also limit access to necessary medical treatments. Many insurance policies fail to cover gender-affirming treatments, mental health services, or fertility treatments for LBT individuals. High out-of-pocket costs make healthcare inaccessible for those with unstable employment or income.

LBT Health and Social Context

Mental health services are another area of concern. LBT individuals experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use, yet mental health services are often inadequate or unavailable. Many providers lack cultural competency in working with LBT individuals, further limiting their access to effective support.

Health Care Disparities

LBT individuals experience significant health disparities due to discrimination, lack of culturally competent care, and social determinants of health. One of the most pressing concerns is mental health. Compared to the general population, LBT individuals have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Transgender individuals, particularly trans women of color, face extreme levels of violence and psychological distress, further exacerbating mental health struggles.

HIV/AIDS and sexual health disparities are also prevalent. Bisexual women and transgender individuals have higher risks for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to limited access to LGBTQ+-inclusive sexual health education. Lesbian women often receive inadequate sexual health screenings because healthcare providers assume they are at lower risk. Additionally, routine cancer screenings are less commonly accessed by LBT individuals due to provider bias or discomfort in discussing sexual history. Transgender individuals who undergo hormone therapy may require specialized cancer screenings, yet many healthcare providers lack guidance on proper screening protocols.

LBT Health and Social Context

Substance abuse rates are also disproportionately high among LBT individuals due to stress, trauma, and discrimination. Tobacco, alcohol, and drug use are common coping mechanisms in this population. However, many addiction treatment programs do not offer LBT-inclusive support, reducing successful recovery outcomes.

Conclusion

Lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals face unique health challenges due to systemic barriers, discrimination, and social determinants of health. Addressing these disparities requires comprehensive policy changes, improved medical education, and inclusive healthcare practices. Health professionals must receive specialized training to provide affirming and competent care, and policymakers must ensure legal protections that promote equity in health access. Through these efforts, health outcomes for LBT individuals can be improved, fostering a more inclusive and just healthcare system.

US & UK DEI Comparative Analysis

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are key principles aimed at creating fair, just, and inclusive environments in workplaces, educational institutions, and society at large. In the United Kingdom, a similar framework is used, but it is commonly referred to as Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) rather than DEI. While the goals of DEI and EDI align closely, their implementation and emphasis differ due to variations in legal frameworks, cultural priorities, and historical contexts. This essay explores the terminology used for DEI in the United Kingdom, examines its meaning in comparison to DEI in the United States, and discusses the implications of these differences.

US & UK DEI Comparative Analysis

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the United Kingdom

The term Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is the most commonly used term in the United Kingdom to describe efforts related to fairness, representation, and inclusivity in organizations and institutions. The concept of equality takes precedence in the UK framework, reflecting a strong commitment to legal protections against discrimination. The Equality Act 2010 serves as the foundational legislation that protects individuals from unfair treatment based on nine protected characteristics, including age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation (Equality and Human Rights Commission, 2010).

US & UK DEI Comparative Analysis

In contrast to the U.S. focus on equity, the UK’s EDI approach underscores equality, ensuring that individuals have the same opportunities and are not subjected to discrimination. Diversity and inclusion are also critical components of EDI, promoting representation across different demographics and fostering environments where everyone feels valued and respected.

Comparison of EDI in the UK and DEI in the U.S.

Although EDI in the UK and DEI in the U.S. share a common purpose, there are notable differences in their focus and implementation:

  1. Legal Foundations and Emphasis on Equality vs. Equity
    • The UK approach to EDI is strongly influenced by legal requirements, particularly the Equality Act 2010, which legally mandates organizations to prevent discrimination and promote equality.
    • The U.S. DEI framework, while influenced by laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, tends to emphasize equity, meaning that individuals may require different levels of support to achieve fair outcomes.
  1. Focus on Systemic Change vs. Legal Compliance
    • In the U.S., DEI often addresses historical injustices and systemic disparities, particularly in relation to race and socioeconomic status. Equity-focused initiatives aim to level the playing field by recognizing and addressing disadvantages.
    • In the UK, the focus is more on ensuring compliance with legal equality standards rather than addressing systemic inequities in the same way as the U.S. model.
  1. Approach to Affirmative Action and Positive Action
    • The U.S. employs affirmative action policies, particularly in education and employment, to actively redress past discrimination.
    • The UK does not use affirmative action but instead allows for positive action, which permits targeted support for underrepresented groups without mandating quotas or preferential treatment.
  1. Cultural and Historical Differences
    • The U.S. DEI framework is deeply shaped by racial history, particularly the legacy of slavery and segregation, leading to a focus on race-conscious policies.
    • The UK’s EDI framework is shaped by its colonial past and migration patterns, with a focus on anti-discrimination laws and multiculturalism.

The Role of EDI in UK Workplaces and Institutions

In the UK, EDI is a legal and ethical responsibility for employers, educational institutions, and organizations. Many institutions have developed EDI policies to:

  • Ensure fair recruitment and promotion practices.
  • Create inclusive workplace cultures.
  • Address unconscious bias in decision-making.
  • Improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

A good example is the National Health Service (NHS), which integrates EDI principles into healthcare policies to ensure equal access to quality care for all patients, regardless of background (NHS, 2023).

US & UK DEI Comparative Analysis

Conclusion

While DEI in the United States and EDI in the United Kingdom share the same fundamental goal of promoting diversity, inclusion, and fairness, their approaches differ due to legal, historical, and cultural contexts. The UK prioritizes equality and legal compliance, while the U.S. emphasizes equity and systemic change. Understanding these differences is crucial for organizations operating in both countries, ensuring they tailor their diversity strategies to align with local policies and social expectations. Ultimately, both models aim to create inclusive societies where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.

Hypertension in African American Adults

Hypertension is a significant public health concern that disproportionately affects African American adults. According to Healthy People 2030, one of the key objectives is to “Reduce the proportion of adults with high blood pressure” (HDS-04). Hypertension contributes to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure, making it a critical issue requiring targeted interventions. This paper explores the significance of hypertension in African American adults, the rationale for selecting this issue, evidence-based nursing interventions, and a quality improvement (QI) initiative aimed at improving patient outcomes. Additionally, the discussion highlights the importance of nursing involvement in quality initiatives and the role of professional nursing values in enhancing patient care.

Hypertension in African American Adults

Rationale and Importance to Nursing

Hypertension is particularly prevalent among African American adults due to genetic, environmental, and social determinants of health. Research indicates that African Americans develop high blood pressure at an earlier age, have more severe hypertension, and are less likely to achieve blood pressure control compared to other racial and ethnic groups (Wright et al., 2021). Given these disparities, it is crucial for nursing professionals to implement targeted interventions that enhance patient outcomes. Addressing hypertension aligns with nursing’s commitment to promoting health, preventing disease, and reducing healthcare disparities.

Nursing Interventions and Outcomes

Two evidence-based nursing interventions have shown effectiveness in improving hypertension management among African American adults:

  1. Culturally Tailored Patient Education Programs
    • A study by Ogedegbe et al. (2020) found that culturally tailored education focusing on dietary modifications, physical activity, and medication adherence significantly improved blood pressure control. The intervention included personalized counseling sessions and group workshops that emphasized the importance of a low-sodium diet and regular physical activity.
    • Outcome: The study reported a 15% increase in medication adherence and a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure by an average of 10 mmHg among participants.
  2. Nurse-Led Home Blood Pressure Monitoring (HBPM) Programs
    • Another study by Brown et al. (2021) demonstrated that nurse-led HBPM, combined with regular telehealth consultations, improved hypertension control rates. Patients were trained on self-monitoring techniques, and nurses provided ongoing feedback and medication adjustments as needed.
    • Outcome: The intervention resulted in a 20% increase in hypertension control rates and reduced emergency department visits related to uncontrolled hypertension.

Quality Improvement Initiative and Patient Care

Based on these findings, a hospital-based QI initiative should focus on implementing a Culturally Tailored Hypertension Management Program (CTHMP). This program would integrate patient education and HBPM into standard hypertension care for African American adults. Key components would include:

  • Nurse-led educational workshops that address cultural dietary habits and lifestyle modifications.
  • Home blood pressure monitoring kits provided to patients, with nurses offering telehealth follow-ups.
  • Collaboration with community health workers to ensure continuity of care and adherence to treatment plans.

Implementing this QI initiative would improve medication adherence, increase patient engagement, and enhance hypertension control, ultimately reducing hospital admissions due to hypertension-related complications.

Nursing, Quality, and Outcomes Nurses play a critical role in driving quality initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes. Their frontline position in healthcare allows them to identify patient needs and implement evidence-based strategies for better health management. Two professional nursing values—advocacy and patient-centered care—are essential in improving patient outcomes:

  1. Advocacy: Nurses advocate for equitable healthcare access, ensuring that African American patients receive culturally competent care that addresses specific risk factors contributing to hypertension.
  2. Patient-Centered Care: By prioritizing individualized treatment plans and engaging patients in their healthcare decisions, nurses empower patients to take an active role in managing their hypertension.

Conclusion

Hypertension among African American adults is a critical healthcare priority that requires targeted nursing interventions. Culturally tailored patient education and nurse-led home blood pressure monitoring have been shown to improve hypertension control rates. Implementing a hospital-based QI initiative integrating these interventions can enhance patient outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities. Nursing’s involvement in quality initiatives, guided by values of advocacy and patient-centered care, is essential in addressing this pressing public health issue and improving the overall well-being of patients.
