One of the biggest complaints among managers is the huge amount of time they have to spend in meetings. Ideally the purpose of meetings is to put everyone’s heads together to solve a problem or make a decision. But far too often they can lead to unproductive, time-wasting conversations and even conflict.

For this assignment, think about some recent meetings you’ve attended where a significant decision had to be made. Think carefully about how some of the problems regarding group decision making that were discussed in the background readings apply to what you’ve experienced. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following issues:

  1. Are all voices equally heard and is diversity of the group reflected within the feedback?,
  2. Is time spent at the meetings productive or is a lot of time wasted?,
  3. Are the decisions that are made solid ones?, Or do they suffer from problems mentioned in the background materials such as groupthink?,
  4. Are ideas expressed at meetings creative and original or are original ideas discouraged?,

Then think about your own job and workplace and how these concepts apply to your own work life. Once you have finished reviewing the background readings and have carefully thought about how these concepts relate to your own job, write a 2- to 3-page paper answering the following questions:

The issue of access to quality healthcare remains a challenge in the United States. Inadequate access is more pervasive in rural communities. Most efforts to improve access have not yielded the desired results. Studies suggest that rural healthcare has changed significantly within the past decade as a result of healthcare financing, the emergence of new technologies, and the clustering of health networks and services. A lack of financial resources in rural communities coupled with provider shortages continue to have negative impacts on health outcomes.

Affirmative Action for Unemployed Veterans

 

Unemployed veterans, take heart: Walmart wants YOU. In a historic move, the retailing giant vows to hire any returning U.S. veteran who applies. Projections are that Walmart will extend job offers to 100,000 veterans from 2013 to 2018. Other businesses are launching similar initiatives, such as JPMorgan Chase’s 100,000 Jobs Mission, which aims to hire that many veterans by 2020. Is this an ethical choice all businesses should be emulating, or a form of reverse discrimination?

 

 

 

Few people would disagree there is a need to address the plight of returning soldiers in America. As a rule, veterans say employers don’t want them. “There are a lot of companies that say they want veterans, but that conflicts with the unemployment numbers,” said Hakan Jackson, a former technician in the Air Force. He’s right: unemployment rates remain higher for veterans. The suicide rate for veterans is also sharply higher than for active-duty soldiers, and the “hopelessness of unemployment almost certainly plays a role,” reports Georgette Mosbacher, CEO of the Borghese Cosmetics Company and board member of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Veterans need jobs. But is affirmative action justified, or are these former soldiers not competing well in the job market?

According to some veterans, the returning solders are not competitive in the marketplace. Erik Sewell, an Iraq war veteran, suggested the reason the veteran unemployment rate is poor is partly because vets often don’t market their strengths well or showcase their transferable skills to potential employers. Bryson DeTrent, a 12-year veteran of the National Guard, observed that one of the key reasons vets haven’t found jobs is that they aren’t working hard at it, preferring to collect unemployment instead. However, he also found that companies are reluctant to hire veterans, especially National Guard members, fearing these employees may later be recalled to duty. Employers also worry that veterans may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though some managers report that veterans’ work ethic, team outlook, and receptivity to training are greater than among the general populace.

 

 

 

Sometimes, affirmative action is needed to give an unfairly disadvantaged workforce segment an opportunity to succeed, whether it is done through percentage quotas, number quotas, or hiring all prospective employees from the desired groups. But any affirmative action program risks including under-qualified individuals from the target group while excluding qualified individuals from other workforce segments, creating reverse discrimination. Resources are always scarce, and there are only so many jobs to go around. If a manager must choose between a qualified civilian candidate and a qualified veteran, the manager might favor the veteran without discrimination. But if a manager must choose an under-qualified veteran candidate over a qualified civilian candidate due to an affirmative action policy, the manager is forced to discriminate against the qualified candidate. Managers must balance the ethics of affirmative action against the responsibility of strengthening their workforces for the good of their organizations.

CSR is a narrower concept than ESG. CSR is focused on philanthropy and community engagement. CSR is often undertaken voluntarily to improve a company’s image. ESG is more comprehensive than CSR. ESG combines environmental, social, and governance considerations into a company’s core operations and strategy. ESG often uses standardized reporting mechanisms for more transparency and comparability. ESG creates long-term value for both the company and its stakeholders by making sustainability and social responsibility fundamental business priorities.

 

CSR is a Narrower Concept than ESG

Much of your analysis for this milestone will focus on communication strategies. For a company to change its culture, all members of the organization must understand the vision. Everyone must believe in the vision and adapt behaviors to create a positive working environment. You are to analyze the strategies your selected company employed to create change. You will focus on specific examples that helped the company adopt or change CSR and ESG policies and practices.For the third milestone, you will continue your analysis of the company you selected for the final project. Each year, the directors of federal agencies testify before Congress to convince lawmakers that their agency truly needs funds being requested for the following year’s budget. However, Congress wants to know how that money is being spent. Typically, agency directors testify before Congress regarding the nature of the budget request and answer questions from lawmakers. Agencies also provide a large report called a Budget Justification. Finally, lawmakers often have “Questions for the Record,” which require agencies to conduct additional research and provide follow-up written reports that address Congress’ questions.
