Week 10 Discussion- The elected office.

What does it take to run for the elected office? What are the resources you may need?

Anyone who wants to run for an elected office must first understand the roles and expectations for the position they desire. The first step is to confirm the eligibility requirement for the position that you desire to pursue. For a nurse, this means being familiar with the responsibilities of the position and how they interact with healthcare policies.  A strong professional background in nursing, leadership experience, and knowledge of public health issues are vital tools for a nurse seeking a leadership position.  Solid leadership qualities are critical because they equip the leader with the expertise and skill needed to lead the team and manage the resources, and challenges in the dynamic healthcare setting. (Mrayyan MT, et al., 2023).  Leaders must develop a platform of clear policy priorities that address healthcare challenges, such as access to care, patient safety, and nursing workforce issues. (www.ncsbn.org). Networking and Support are vital tools for seeking a public office. Nurses in leadership must establish connections with professional organizations, community leaders, and advocacy groups. Nurses possess unique insights into healthcare challenges and can bring valuable expertise to the elected office. (Restivo, V., et al., 2022).  Running for office requires understanding the role, developing a platform, building a network, securing funding, and engaging the community. Resources such as professional organizations, campaign staff, and policy advisors are critical for success. (Chiu, P., et al., 2021). Healthcare Policy and Analysis

Congresswoman Lauren Underwood serves Illinois’ 14th Congressional District and was sworn into the 116th U.S. Congress on January 3, 2019. She is the youngest African American woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives. Before her election to Congress, Congresswoman Underwood worked with a Medicaid plan in Chicago to ensure it provided high-quality, cost-efficient care. She served as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), helping communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterror threats, and public health emergencies. As a career public servant at HHS, she helped implement the Affordable Care Act — broadening access for those on Medicare, improving healthcare quality, and reforming private insurance. She also taught future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University’s online master’s program. that prioritize patient care and workforce development. (www.ANA.org)

Importance of Nurses Running for Office Healthcare Policy and Analysis

Nurses in elected roles can directly impact healthcare policy tackle systemic challenges such as staffing shortages and patient safety and enhance the profession’s representation in policymaking., Their leadership can cultivate a more equal and efficient healthcare system. (ANA.org, 2023)., Motivating nurses to seek political leadership is crucial for establishing a healthcare system that addresses the needs of both patients and providers.,

Running for elected office is a complex and multifaceted process that requires a blend of resources, skills, and commitment. One of the most significant requirements is time commitment. Campaigning takes a great deal of time, as it involves public speaking, attending events, and engaging with voters. Candidates often must balance their professional lives with the demanding schedule of a campaign. Financial resources are also crucial, as running a campaign can be quite expensive. Funds are necessary for advertising, travel, staff, and other campaign-related expenses, and candidates often rely on donations, fundraising events, or their own savings to cover these costs (Pitsker, 2019). In addition to finances, a strong team is vital for a successful campaign. This team typically includes campaign managers, communication strategists, fundraisers, social media experts, and volunteers who assist with canvassing and spreading the message. A deep understanding of the political landscape, public policy, and the issues that matter to voters is also essential, which means candidates must be well-versed in these areas and have effective public speaking skills. The ability to connect with diverse groups of people is equally important. Finally, endorsements and networking can play a pivotal role in a campaign’s success. Support from influential individuals or organizations can build credibility, while networking allows candidates to reach a wider audience and gain the necessary momentum for their campaign. Together, these components outline the extensive resources and efforts required to run for elected office.

Nurses should consider running for office for several compelling reasons. First, their in-depth understanding of healthcare systems, the challenges faced by patients, and the realities of working in healthcare uniquely positions them to advocate for policies that improve public health, expand healthcare access, and address the working conditions of nurses. Additionally, nurses are trained to be effective leaders in high-pressure environments, often managing teams and making critical decisions. These leadership skills can easily translate into government roles, where decisive and compassionate leadership is key. Nurses are also driven by a passion for improving the lives of others, and running for office offers them an opportunity to influence political decision-making on important issues like healthcare, education, and social justice. By running for office, they can ensure that the needs and concerns of the healthcare community are addressed, providing a vital and informed perspective in the political arena. Ultimately, nurses can make a significant difference by using their expertise and values to advocate for policies that benefit both their profession and society at large.

Nurses Who Have Become Elected Officials: Healthcare Policy and Analysis

Nurses often bring a unique perspective to politics due to their hands-on experience with healthcare, community well-being, and the challenges faced by both patients and healthcare professionals. Congresswoman Jen Kiggans is an example of a nurse who has successfully entered the political arena (Kiggans, n.d.). She is a Veteran Navy Helicopter pilot, who served 2 tours in the Persian Gulf. After retirement, Congresswoman Kiggans returned to school to become a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (Kiggans, n.d.).

In conclusion, running for office requires significant resources, dedication, and expertise. Nurses who run for office can offer invaluable insights, advocate for improved healthcare policies and represent their communities in ways that directly align with their values and expertise., This makes political involvement a meaningful and impactful way for nurses to extend their service to society beyond the clinic or hospital., Healthcare Policy and Analysis

Cancer Public  Service  Announcement Project

The local chapter of the American Cancer Society has learned that you are taking a Cancer Biology college course and have asked you to help them develop a public service announcement. The goal of the announcement is to educate the general public on the biology of one specific type of cancer and to encourage people to get screened, look for signs themselves, or implement lifestyle changes that will reduce their chance of developing that specific type of cancer.

Cancer Public  Service  Announcement Project

In this multi-step assignment, you will throughout the semester create a public service announcement brochure, article, poster, video, podcast, or narrated presentation.   Cancer Public  Service  Announcement Project

If you choose a video, podcast, or narrated presentation, you must also include a written script as part of your presentation. If a presentation or video is uploaded to YouTube (unlisted); you can download an automatically generated transcript – see more information below.

This assignment addresses the following course outcomes:

  • Identify properties involved in maintaining homeostasis in order to recognize how certain factors contribute to cancer.
  • Recognize the complexity of cancer and assess current approaches for screening, diagnosis, and treatment in order to adopt appropriate lifestyle strategies.
  • Apply knowledge of causes, development, and progression of cancer to ask questions and make informed decisions about personal and public health.
Step 3:  Submit an Outline Week 5 Cancer Public  Service  Announcement Project

The outline should be in alphanumeric format with numbers for the main sections and letters for the sublevels under each main section/level (the outline should not be a draft with full sentences and paragraphs). The more tiers/levels and supportive details you include in the outline, the more you will likely benefit from the feedback.

Include at least one numbered main tier/level for each of the required sections of the service announcement (introduction, genetic/environmental factors, development/progression, screening/diagnosis/treatment, public health, conclusion). Include enough lettered sublevels for each main tier/level to clearly outline what you plan to include in each section. Depending on the section, enough sublevels for each main level may vary, for some two may be enough, and for others, you may include five or more. You may also include additional levels of supportive detail when that is beneficial.

If you would like feedback on the images you plan to use. you can include them in the outline document as well (Optional).

Here are some resources that you may find helpful when writing your outline:

Important: If you use a Generative AI tool to assist you with this assignment, it must be acknowledged. Please review the statement about Generative AI use under Academic Policies in the syllabus, and the UMGC Artificial Intelligence Guide, especially in regard to the importance of acknowledgement and citation. The large majority of your assignment must be your own work, and any Gen AI output incorporated into the assignment must be cited as such. An important aspect of responsible AI use, and academic integrity, is honesty. Your own voice, your own thoughts, and supportive detail from each of the information sources cited, should be evident throughout all your submitted work.  Cancer Public  Service  Announcement Project

Due in Week 7 (included for required information needed when preparing the outline):

Step 4: Submit Public Service Announcement

Regardless of the chosen format, your public service announcement should contain the following information:

  • Introduction: Share a few statistics about the chosen type of cancer and introduce what will be covered.,
  • Describe the known genetic and environmental factors that cause this type of cancer., Include details about genes inherited and spontaneous mutations proteins hormones and known carcinogens that are involved with the development of this type of cancer.,
  • Using your knowledge of cancer cell and tissue biology describe the development and progression of this type of cancer.,
  • Discuss the current approach for screening diagnosis and treatment for this type of cancer., Include either an explanation of how one type of treatment works at the cellular level or discuss an emerging innovative approach to treatment.
  • Discuss what can be done from a public health perspective, and from an individual perspective, to reduce the risks associated with the development of this type of cancer.
  • Conclusion
  • A minimum of 5 informative and relevant images are required, regardless of the chosen format. More than 5 is fine. These images should be referred to in the text and/or narration and should be explained as needed. Include the source below each image (just the url is enough). See suggestion for type of images under Step 2.
  • Length Requirement: 1200-1800 words  (for the article, brochure, or narration transcript – fewer words on the slides themselves for the presentation option).
  • Mechanics and organization of content will account for 10% of the assignment grade.

Your announcement should be fully paraphrased in your own words, with your own writing style, and structure. Changing just a few words in a sentence is not fully paraphrasing.

Use in-text citations within your assignment and a reference list at the end. Text from outside sources either needs to be fully paraphrased in your own writing style (in-text citation is still needed), or needs quotation marks around the copied text, plus an in-text citation after. There should be a minimal need for direct quotes in this assignment (less than 10%).

Remember that your audience is the public. Although you may be using some technical information resources you should explain everything so that people who have not completed BIOL 304, or attended college, can understand it.

Submit your public service announcement to the assignment folder by the due date listed in the syllabus.

Submission formats:

  • Submit a narrated presentation as an unlisted YouTube link (see instructions below), and a written transcript in a Word document.
  • Submit a popular science article or a scientific brochure as a Word, PowerPoint, or PDF file.

Turnitin: The originality of your assignment will be checked with Turnitin. Please review the originality report, and if needed, submit a revised assignment before the submission deadline.

Coca-Cola Racial Discrimination Response

  • The Civil Rights Act of 1964

Coca-Cola has been sued for race discrimination and racial harassment by 16 black and Hispanic employees located in Queens and Westchester, New York. These employees claim that they were forced to perform low-level jobs that were not assigned to white workers.

Coca-Cola Racial Discrimination Response

One of the victimized employees, Sondra Walker claimed that she was subjected to degrading racial slurs.

The plaintiffs allege that their complaints went unheeded, no disciplinary action was taken against their aggressors, and, in fact, they were subject to retaliation.

Walker cited two particular incidences that were quite egregious: on one occasion, a white employee was permitted to wear a Confederate flag bandana on his head, and on another occasion, a white employee who was asked to clean a sewer uttered a racial slur.

Guillermo Nunez, a plaintiff who is claiming he suffered infliction of emotional distress, retorted that it was his belief that Coca-Cola was an ethically minded employer prior to its indifference to racial harassment.

Coca-Cola spokesman Toney Anaya stated that Coca-Cola was aware of the allegations and was in the process of conducting an in-house investigation.

1 A.  How could a global company like Coca-Cola have allowed such a serious incident of racial harassment to occur? What could have been done to avoid it?

1.B Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Affirmative Action

This is the practical assignment where you will practice skills related to employment law that will translate into real-life skills that will be utilized in your career as a human resources specialist

The assignment is as follows:

Ray and Debbie are the owners of a technology company with over one hundred employees.  Their company has hired you as an HR Specialist.  Your first task is to complete a memorandum:

    1. Creating a new company policy pertaining to race discrimination that complies with the terms of the civil rights act and all applicable laws;,
    2. Discussing potential employee training that can be enacted to help avoid or reduce any company legal liability associated with racial discrimination; and
    3.  Addressing steps that should be taken in the event a complaint is received pertaining to race discrimination.

**Please cite the textbook reference below and other scholarly authors! Moran, J.J. (2014). Employment law: new challenges in the business environment. (6th Ed.). Boston: Pearson

ZV, 1C. Coca-Cola’s strategy for handling harassment and discrimination among its employees has serious flaws, as evidenced by the racial harassment allegations made against the business., A global company such as Coca-Cola ought to have implemented the required procedures training and policies to stop this kind of activity., Coca-Cola has numerous rules in place to prevent discrimination and racial harassment., However, employees could not completely comprehend the seriousness of these behaviors or the company’s objectives if there were no continuous, efficient training and awareness initiatives in place. (Inclusion and Diversity and Anti-Harassment Policy, 2024).

The mere fact that complaints were allegedly disregarded and no disciplinary action was taken raises the possibility that Coca-Cola failed to enforce its standards which may have prohibited racial discrimination and harassment., To support the impacted staff and ensure that proper disciplinary actions were taken against those implicated in misbehavior Coca-Cola should have launched an immediate and impartial investigation into the claims., This would show workers that the business is dedicated to upholding an inclusive and courteous work environment and takes racial harassment seriously., The effectiveness of anti-discrimination policies is undermined when there are no repercussions for the offenders such as allowing racist slurs., This meant that management did not respond in a timely manner and/or that there was a cultural tolerance of discriminatory behavior (Coca-Cola Bottling of Mobile to Pay $35000 to Settle EEOC Sex Discrimination Suit 2016).,

Coca-Cola should have used routine audits of workplace culture and employee feedback systems to spot any discriminatory or harassing trends early on and stop future incidents., The organization needed to make an effort to establish a culture at work that values inclusion and diversity. Additionally, in order to ensure that workers felt comfortable using the reporting channels, the organization ought to have a greater knowledge of them. For accusations of harassment or discrimination, Coca-Cola needed to make sure that staff members had easy access to a private, impartial, and confidential reporting system (Findlaw.com, 2024).

In closing, to resolve these concerns, Coca-Cola must act quickly and forcefully in the future. This includes strengthening reporting procedures, providing more thorough employee training, and holding all staff members responsible for fostering an inclusive and courteous work environment. This will allow them to restate their commitment to diversity and inclusion and work toward ensuring that such instances never occur again. This will help the company to gain the trust and credibility of the employees again (Coca-Cola, 2024).

KW, 1.D, Discrimination of race is an occurrence when one race of employees receives preferential treatment over another race (Moran, 2014).  Coca-Cola has not been new to discrimination accusations and lawsuits. In 2001, Coca-Cola was involved in the nation’s biggest class-action settlement due to race employment discrimination.  The allegations against Coca-Cola involved pay variances between races and a glass ceiling that kept African Americans from obtaining any positions in their company past entry-level management (Mehrit, n.d.).

In the situation with Sondra Walker and Guillermo Nunez, there was another occurrence of racial discrimination.  Title VII does not allow for racial discrimination and when allegations arise, the company must investigate the allegations in a prompt manner (Moran, 2014).  Coca-Cola had knowledge of the allegations as stated by spokesperson Toney Anaya.  Due to the fact that there was more than one incident, it can appear as though an in-house investigation by Coca-Cola did not occur urgently.

Coca-Cola allowed for such an incident to occur by not responding to the complaints quickly.  According to Walker and Nunez in their complaints to Coca-Cola, their complaints were not addressed, leading to professional policies being enforced poorly, relationships and organizational culture not centered around ethical practices.  It is evident that training was inadequate to the employees of the organization.  If their discrimination prevention practices and procedures were properly attended to, it could have established with the employees that they should not be targeted at any time, thereby decreasing their motivation and productivity levels.  The EEOC provides that approximately 75% of employees who have faced harassment do not report it to their superiors.  This can lead to financial detriments to the company, along with negative reputations (Grace, 2023).  The employees of Coca-Cola did report the discrimination and harassment, which indicates that either Coca-Cola did not perform regular training of its employees, or if they did, actions were not taken to cease problematic and discriminatory behaviors.

In order to avoid the discriminatory practices at Coca-Cola, they could have implemented mandatory discrimination and harassment training and also provided protections against retaliatory behavior. According to McHugh (2021), the sole intent of instilling proper behavior is not the correct way to combat discrimination, while routinely evaluating and updating their policies that arise promptly is beneficial.  Practices such as regular audits of discrimination policies to ensure that all protected categories are recognized and visibly presenting information to report incidents made clear to employees is essential (McHugh, 2021).

Coca-Cola also could have extended their training to include external resources if needed and mandated training on a consistent, regular basis as well as part of all on-boarding of new employees.  Proper training would have taught the employees what is permitted or discriminatory and established clear and concise boundaries of what is not tolerated in the workplace.  The administering of time-sensitive guidelines for investigating claims instead of delayed reaction time prevents additional incidents to transpire.

Summary of Criminal Justice

You must submit a 3 page summary of the assigned readings from this week (approximately 1 page per article). This is not the appropriate place to discuss whether or not you enjoyed the material but is instead a means to assess whether or not you understood the material well enough to briefly summarize it.

Summary of Criminal Justice

In other words, do not make your own argument in the summary papers (you will do that on your exam), instead summarize the study or key arguments the author(s) is making.

Psychiatric Case Study

  • Present the full complex case study. Include chief complaint; history of present illness; any pertinent past psychiatric, substance use, medical, social, family history; most recent mental status exam; current psychiatric diagnosis including differentials that were ruled out; and plan for treatment and management.

Psychiatric Case Study

  • Report normal diagnostic results as the name of the test and “normal” (rather than specific value). Abnormal results should be reported as a specific value.
  • Be succinct in your presentation, and do not exceed 8 minutes. Specifically address the following for the patient, using your SOAP note as a guide:
    • Subjective: What details did the patient provide regarding their chief complaint and symptomology to derive your differential diagnosis?, What is the duration and severity of their symptoms?, How are their symptoms impacting their functioning in life?,
    • Objective: What observations did you make during the psychiatric assessment?,
    • Assessment: Discuss their mental status examination results. What were your differential diagnoses?, Provide a minimum of three possible diagnoses and why you chose them., List them from highest priority to lowest priority. What was your primary diagnosis, and why? Describe how your primary diagnosis aligns with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and supported by the patient’s symptoms.
    • Plan: In your video, describe your treatment plan using clinical practice guidelines supported by evidence-based practice. Include a discussion on your chosen FDA-approved psychopharmacologic agents and include alternative treatments available and supported by valid research. All treatment choices must have a discussion of your rationale for the choice supported by valid research. What were your follow-up plan and parameters? What referrals would you make or recommend as a result of this treatment session? Psychiatric Case Study
    • In your written plan include all the above as well as include one social determinant of health according to the HealthyPeople 2030 (you will need to research) as applied to this case in the realm of psychiatry and mental health. As a future advanced provider, what are one health promotion activity and one patient education consideration for this patient for improving health disparities and inequities in the realm of psychiatry and mental health? Demonstrate your critical thinking.
    • Reflection notes: What would you do differently with this patient if you could conduct the session over? If you are able to follow up with your patient, explain whether these interventions were successful and why or why not. If you were not able to conduct a follow up, discuss what your next intervention would be. Psychiatric Case Study

IRBs Case Study

The Case: IRBs in Conflict you are presented with a case, please see below.  Review the case and answer the following questions.  Your answers can be bulleted.

IRBs Case Study

  1. In your introductory statement include your position on whether or not the IRB should approve the study. (5 points),
  2. What are the ethical issues and points of conflict in this case? (15 points) (limit to 1 paragraph),
  3. Who are the interested parties affected by the issues/conflicts and what are their reasonable expectations?, (5 points) (list and summarize the reasonable expectations)
  4. Depending on on your position on whether or not the IRB should approve the study what would be the probable consequences?, REMEMBER: Consequences can be multifaceted. (10 points) (limit to 1 paragraph),

Researchers in a developing nation in South America (SA) have been studying a hereditary disorder found only in an isolated, indigenous population living deep in the jungle. They now hope they can identify the gene(s) that may be associated with the disorder in order to identify causative factors and to find interventions and targeted therapies. To accomplish this, they will need to collaborate with a qualified US researcher, Dr. Herod I. Tarry. Dr .Tarry is a world-renowned molecular biologist who is utilizing a genomic technology that is not widely available. The SA researchers would send subject blood samples to Dr. Tarry’s U.S. lab for testing. IRBs Case Study

The SA researchers submitted a protocol amendment to the South America Institutional Review Board (SAIRB), which is the IRB of record for the study. The protocol amendment added Dr. Tarry to the study team and added the genomic research. In addition, the SAIRB-approved informed consent form (ICF) was revised to include information about the blood draw for genomic analysis. The SA researchers’ revised protocol and consent form were approved by the SAIRB in compliance with South America’s research regulatory requirements.

Per his institution’s requirements, Dr. Tarry must get approval for his work on the international study from the institution’s IRB (Amazing IRB). Dr. Tarry submits the SAIRB-approved documents in a proposal to the Amazing IRB. Dr. Tarry is asked to present the SA hereditary disorder study at the next convened meeting for Amazing IRB. IRBs Case Study

The Amazing IRB members are not receptive to the proposal, in large part due to the perceived quality of the ICF. The SAIRB-approved ICF is a single-spaced, typed page (about 550 words). It includes a description of the study, the procedures (including the blood draw for genomic analysis), risks, benefits, and confidentiality protections. However, the details are more limited than the Amazing IRB usually sees. IRBs Case Study

While the consent technically meets all the required US regulatory elements for informed consent, the Amazing IRB members feel it is far below US standards for consent documents. Dr. Tarry acknowledges the consent document is not written like consents are in the US. He states he is not consenting subjects for this study and he will not have any contact with them. He points out to the IRB members that the consent document is acceptable by the SA research regulatory standards and he hopes the Amazing IRB will approve the study and the consent as is. In final comments, he notes his role in the research can be very beneficial to the study population and as such it is extremely important for him to participate in the genomic research.
