Prison Culture. A Guardian reporter, speaking about England, wrote: “Anyone going to jail in this country has to adapt to a cynical, corrupt, antisocial lifestyle which does little to encourage change in post-prison behaviour” (James, 2015). This quote implies that prison culture is notably different from the culture at large, and though it speaks specifically of England, we can apply it to U.S. culture as well. For this discussion answer the following questions. What do you see as the key elements of the convict code in prison culture? What are the key elements of our culture’s moral code? Are there differences as well as similarities?  Do some subcultures of the United States reflect the convict code more closely than others? The Value of Auctions. Auctions can be an important tool for selling goods and gathering information. Write an assignment examining the value of auctions in the economy by addressing the following items. Explain the difference between oral auctions and second-price auctions, including how they work and their results. Use the expected value information to illustrate how having more bidders in an oral auction will likely result in a higher winning bid. Explain how the number of bidders in a common value auction affects the outcome of the auction. Relate this to the effect on price in different market structures based on the number of producers. Auctions can be an important tool for selling goods and gathering information. Judicial Program Evaluation. Program evaluation is an essential skill with the multitude of new programs from across the country that are designed to support justice-involved individuals as well as fill-in gaps in services in the current system. It is important to be able to analyze evidence that could show whether a program would be effective in your local community with your specific population and their specific needs. For this assignment, you are the probation officer supervisor and have just attended an industry conference. You have been asked to present what you learned about current trends in programs and interventions with the rest of your department. Lau Versus Nichols. Lau v. Nichols was a class-action lawsuit that led to the eventual implementation of English immersion as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. For this week’s discussion, please respond to the following according to your focus in Higher Education. In Higher Education, institutions can require that students pass a test, known as the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, to ensure English proficiency. What barriers might the use of TOEFL create for students? What might be some valid reasons that Higher Education institutions should use this test to ensure English language proficiency? Lau v. The Influence of Peers. “If Johnny jumps off a cliff are you going to jump, too”? This is a cliché used often by parents wanting to convince their children that doing what “everyone else does” is not always a good idea. For example, binge drinking is an increasing problem on college campuses, often with dire consequences (e.g., alcohol poisoning, unprotected sex, expulsion from school). Given the consequences, one wonders what compels college students to engage in such risky behavior. We know that fitting in—being accepted by others—is a primary motive for doing what others do. In this case, conforming to one’s referent group’s norms (i.e., getting drunk is cool) gains one’s acceptance to that group (Talbott, Wilkinson, Moore, & Usdan, 2014; Wardell & Read, 2013). Refusal to comply means rejection by the group. Binge drinking, clearly, is not in the best interest of individual college students, unless you consider the importance of belonging to and acceptance by the group. For this Discussion, you explore persuasion strategies with respect to the effects of peer influence on behavior.

TO PREPARE

Review the Learning Resources for this week and examine how social psychology theory and research explain the effects of peer influence on behavior. Consider persuasion strategies that a social psychologist might use to convince someone to defy peer pressure.

BY DAY 3

Post an explanation for how you might persuade someone to “do what is in her or his best interest” when it means defying group demands. Use social psychology theory and research to support your persuasion strategy.

BY DAY 5

Respond to at least one colleague and explain whether or not you found your colleague’s response persuasive and why. Support your explanation with social psychology theory and research.

The Influence of Peers. Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the social psychology theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or Internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your post and responses. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources.

Social Loafing. Brian, a class colleague, is someone who counts on the group’s high achievers to do the majority of the work. This behavior is known as social loafing. Social loafers thrive because they know the high achievers cannot do less than their best; that is precisely what makes them high achievers. Adding to the problem, if it is the group product that is evaluated rather than individual contributions—then Brian will be less motivated to participate. That is why social loafing is rampant in university classrooms where grades are based on the finished group product. For this Discussion, you examine methods to motivate social loafers.

Social Loafing. Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider motivation methods that a social psychologist might use to encourage a social loafer to do his or her share. Recall a time when you observed social loafing. By day 4, post a situation when you experienced or observed social loafing. Informed by social psychology theory, suggest ways to motivate social loafers to carry their weight. By Day 6, respond to at least one of your colleague’s posts and offer additional suggestions.
