Definition Argument Essay Assignment

Goal

Write a 1,500-1,750-word essay using five to seven academic resources in which you argue that a contested “case” fits (or does not fit) within a given category. Follow the directions of your instructor as to what topics are acceptable.

Directions

Follow these steps when composing your essay:

Start by selecting a controversial or contested definitional case. Decide what category you think your case belongs in, with the understanding that others may disagree with you about the definition of your category, and/or whether your chosen case matches your category. In the opening of your essay, introduce the case you will examine and pose your definition question. Do not simply summarize here. Instead, introduce the issue and offer context. To support your argument, define the boundaries of your category (criteria) by using a commonly used definition or by developing your own extended definition. Definition Argument Essay Assignment. Defining your boundaries simply means naming the criteria by which you will discuss your chosen case. In the second part of your argument (the match), show how your case meets (or does not meet) your definition criteria. Perhaps by comparing or sizing up your controversial case to other cases can help you to develop your argument. This essay is NOT simply a persuasive essay. It is an argumentative essay where the writer explains what a term means and uses a specific case to explore the meaning of that term in depth.

Body Positivity Movement. If the body positivity movement had to select its unofficial MVP, it would definitely be Lizzo. Known for her catchy songs like  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P00HMxdsVZI and  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmbmeOgWsqE this singer-songwriter, rapper, and flutist unabashedly celebrates her own body and urges fans to accept themselves, no matter their shape, size, color, gender, or sexuality. Recently, though, celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels (famous for her tenure on the reality television show The Biggest Loser) drew ire from Lizzo’s fans by expressing concern about Lizzo’s health on social media. Little did she know that she was treading on controversial ground in the body positivity movement: the intersection between size and health. Enter into this debate yourself by reading Katelyn Esmonde’s Vox article “What Jillian Michaels Got Wrong about Lizzo and Body PositivityLinks to an external site.” and answer the following questions.

Body Positivity Movement

In response to praise of Lizzo’s self-acceptance, Jillian Michaels declared, “Why are we celebrating her [Lizzo’s] body? … ‘Cause it isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes. I’m just being honest. Like, I love her music. … But there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘And I’m so glad she’s overweight!’” Do you feel that Michaels is justified in her comments? Why or why not? Also, consider Michaels’s potential authority on the topics of health and body. Do these lend more credibility to her comments on Lizzo? Why or why not? Esmonde (the author of the article) argues that “by publicly speculating about Lizzo’s susceptibility to diabetes or other chronic diseases, Michaels is doing more harm than good.” What specifically does the writer mean by this? How exactly does she see Michaels’s comments as causing harm (sometimes even literal) to fat people?

Body Positivity Movement. The author also explores scientific research that complicates our understanding of the relationship between health and weight. Explain how Esmonde argues that poor health is not always related to fatness (and vice versa), using specific examples from the text. Lastly, the author attempts to distinguish expressing concern for someone’s health and fat-shaming. What do you see as the difference between these two things? Do you believe that Jillian Michaels was legitimately worried about Lizzo’s health or was she engaging in a type of fat shaming (or even something else entirely)? Explain your reasoning. Answer the following questions in MLA format, including a title. MINIMUM of 250 words, MAXIMUM of 260 words

Source Review. Select one of your sources that you will use for your Review. You will be making notes (annotating) this text so that you can see how it is written and use it as a model for techniques you want to employ or avoid in your own writing.

This assignment is due midnight Sunday 9/24.

I need to be able to see the original text of your source AND your comments. The easiest way to achieve this may be to copy/paste the text of your source into a Word document so you can easily make notes using the “comments” function or by inserting your comments in a different color using the highlighter function. If you choose that route, be sure to copy/paste the title and author names. Alternatively, if you have Adobe Acrobat, or another way to create comments/notes on a text that would be legible to me, that works. If you submit a document that does not display your comments, your assignment will not be considered complete.

Source Review

Make the following annotations/notes on your source:

Source Review. At the top of your document, use your own words to indicate what kind of text is this. Another review? A scholarly article? A newspaper or magazine article? Identify the thesis or main point and comment on its placement in the text (is it at the beginning? in the conclusion? why?). Identify reasons that support the thesis. Identify examples that support the reasons and comment on whether these examples are convincing. Identify any moments where the writer establishes their authority (expertise in the form of education, experience, or research?). Identify any moments where the writer discusses the intended audience of the text they are writing. Identify any use of other sources or other voices and comment on how they contribute to the overall text.

You will include your own reflective paragraph (200 words) after your annotated source. Did you find this source helpful? Why or why not? What strategies do you plan to steal in writing your own writing? Did this writer make any decisions you’d like to avoid in writing your own writing? What suggestions would you have for the writer to improve their text? The last page of the document will be an MLA works cited page including the information for the source you chose. Be sure to include the URL in your citation so I can go find it online if I need to.

Developing A Marketing Journal. In this assignment you are asked to author a self-reflexive journal about how the culture you are immersed in affects you. This requires you to examine your daily routines in a new light, adopting the point of view of a foreigner for whom many of your actions and words would be puzzling. As you live your normal everyday life, try to make notes (mental or otherwise) of any normal actions, expressions, and habits that would be strange, maybe even inappropriate, to someone not familiar with your culture. This may include also reflecting on your cultural heritage or context and how it influences you. As a goal, try to make one of these notes a day.

Developing A Marketing Journal

Periodically (I recommend weekly but the minimum frequency due will be approximately every other week), write your notes and reflections down on a Google doc or word document. The syllabus has detailed rubrics, but plan for approximately 2 (double spaced) pages of content per submission. Developing A Marketing Journal. The journal entries are the periodic summary of your normal life experience, and thus should not be hard to create. The difficult part is the switch in mindset! The format of this assignment can be very informal and relatively unstructured (like a real journal), but you will be graded on your ability to recognize your own culture’s influence over your life. Bullet points format is acceptable, but full sentences and some depth of explanation is required.

Fishing for New Customers. Brenda Smith has been very successful at getting existing customers to upgrade or purchase new copiers during the past two months. She is, however, disappointed in her efforts to get new customers. To add more new customers, Brenda has been spending a great deal of time prospecting. These efforts have produced a large number of leads. Once she generates a lead, she contacts the firm and tries to set up an appointment. Unfortunately, most of these leads are not interested in talking about copiers and are not willing to schedule a meeting with her. This has been so frustrating that she decided to make several cold calls this week to see if this would be a good way to get to meet with prospective customers. The cold calls were also not very successful and were extremely time consuming. Brenda did finally get a few leads to agree to meet with her, but these appointments were not very productive. The leads were typically satisfied with the copiers they were using and were not interested in learning about NCC copiers.

Fishing for New Customers

Pat Brady, her sales manager, accompanied her on a recent sales call to a lead. After the sales call, Pat expressed his disappointment that they had really wasted their time with this meeting. Pat then asked Brenda about her prospecting process because it was clear that she was not identifying and spending her time with the best sales opportunities. Her approach was not working well and was taking a lot of time. If she continued doing the same things, Brenda was not likely to generate many new customers and might lose some existing customers because she was spending too much of her time prospecting. Brenda realizes that she must improve her prospecting process, but is not sure exactly how to proceed.

Fishing for New Customers. During the past three months, Brenda had improved her prospecting process. She was identifying more prospects that represented better sales opportunities. Brenda knew that it was important to plan her sales calls in advance to maximize the time she spent in face-to-face selling. In this selling environment, most customers were not interested in all of the features of Brenda’s products. Brenda had to determine what was important to each customer and customize her presentations accordingly. Further, she had to clearly communicate the benefits of her products, and not overwhelm potential buyers with too much technical language. Assume that Brenda has an appointment with EFP, a nonprofit organization that raises money to promote environmentally friendly practices such as recycling. The organization uses e-mail, Web-based communications, and direct mail campaigns to reach potential donors. EFP is currently using an older-generation copy machine that frequently needs maintenance.

When EFP needs high-quality color copies, they rely on a local company to produce the copies. This works fairly well, although sometimes there are delays in getting the copies back from the local copy shop. EFP has a fax machine. Although it is rarely used, EFP’s management has told Brenda that a fax capability is important for communicating with some clients. Currently, EFP does not have a good way of scanning documents. Fishing for New Customers. This is a big problem, as using scanned documents in client e-mails is increasingly preferred. Given these circumstances, Brenda believes that EFP could benefit from a multifunction printer. A multifunction printer consolidates the functionality of a printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine into one machine. EFP has agreed to consider a multifunction printer, but their management is concerned about cost and the reliance on a single machine if there are breakdowns.

  1. What is Brenda doing wrong?  What would you recommend Brenda do to improve her prospecting efforts?
  2. Explain the strategi prospecting process to Brenda and discuss how she can implement it.
  3. What secondary lead sources would you recommend Brenda use to identify the best attorneys, architects, accountants, and medical professionals as prospects?
  4. What specific types of information should Brenda obtain before contacting a qualified prospect?
  5. How could Brenda use social selling to improve her strategic prospecting?
  6. Using an Internet search engine, find the general benefits of multifunction printers.  You might enter “benefits of multifunction printers” in the search engine, or examine data from copier providers such as Ricoh, Canon, or Xerox to find these benefits.  List 5 to 6 potential benefits of a digital copier to EFP.
  7. From the listing developed above, select three benefits.  For each benefit, write a sentence or two that Brenda might use to communicate those benefits during sales calls with EFP.
  8. For the three benefits listed above, describe what information Brenda should have on hand when she makes the sales call on the EFP buyer.  Also describe how this information would be best communicated, i.e. what support materials will Brenda need to enhance her verbal communications?
  9. Assume that the buyer acknowledged the value in at least two of the benefits identified in #7.  Write a realistic buyer-seller dialogue of Brenda’s interaction with the EFP buyer concerning these benefits.

Fishing for New Customers. Respond to the questions including at least two outside references to add to your knowledge.  Be sure to complete this in APA with appropriate citations/references.  Due Saturday by 11:59pm.

Marketing Mix Project. Please take the time to read and re-read these instructions for your final project. There are 20 points in the grading rubric for following instructions. There are another 20 points spelling, grammar, and for having at least three references, citing all of your references and having references for all of your citations and APA formatting. Please reach out to me with questions.

It is a minimum of 7-8 pages including a separate Title page and a separate Reference page. There is no maximum number of pages. Pick a good or a service that you are interested in and prepare a report on the Marketing Mix actually used for that product. You are required to choose a product by brand name. You may choose a well-known name like Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, and Coke or a lesser-known brand such as Louisville Slugger, Peavey, or Furby. It can be a familiar product such as a soft drink, automobile, backpack, a piece of sports equipment or a computer; or one that is of special interest to you that is less familiar to most of us such as deer stands, paint ball equipment, or a musical group. Marketing Mix Project. The choice is yours but my one criterion is just to ensure that there is enough marketing information readily available on the good or service.  Discuss this product/service/brand/product line in a single report describing Product, Place, Promotion, and Price.  There should be at least one page for each of the 4P’s.

Marketing Mix Project

Product

This section is the heart of the marketing mix and should describe the product offering and product strategy. The product includes not only the physical unit but also its product depth and breadth of the line/service, package, warranty, after-sale service, brand name, company image, value and many other factors like the products life cycle stage.

Place

This section should describe the Place associated with your product. Place is concerned with making products available when and where customers want them.  A part of place is physical distribution, which involves all the business activities concerned with storing and logistical transporting of the finished products distribution channel and channel management. The goal is to make sure that the products arrive in usable conditions at designated places where they are needed.

Promotion

This section should describe the Promotion associated with your product. Promotion includes advertising, public relations, sales promotion and personal selling tactics that create attention, interest, desire and action. Promotion’s role in the marketing mix is to bring about mutually satisfying exchanges with target markets by informing, educating, persuading and reminding them of the benefits of an organization or product.

 Price

Marketing Mix Project. This section should describe the Pricing strategies associated with your product. Price is what a buyer must give up to obtain a product.  The “value” they see associated with it versus competition which fosters lower pricing. What pricing strategy is used also relates to distribution availability (supply and demand).  It is often the most flexible of the four mix elements- the quickest element to change. It is an important competitive weapon and is very important to the organization because price multiplied by the number of units sold equals total revenue for the firm. PAPER FORMAT- USE APA Style.

Business Research Proposal. This is the concluding project for this Graduate Business Analytics and Research Methods course. It offers students the opportunity to show mastery of all key elements of Research Design, Research Methods, Analytics, and mastery of designing and executing a business-related research proposal. The big picture is for students to assume the position of a research analyst for a corporation or being an independent research analyst, tasked to understand a corporate problem and offer solution(s) via a professionally conducted proposal that would mitigate or alleviate the problem or issue. Three phases fulfill this project:  weeks 3, 5, and 7 (Phase III is a combination of all phases to make a full document). Therefore, phase content scoring less than 75 percent will result in a redo of some parts of the phase or complete phase.

For Phase II:

Do not combine with Phase I content. Address the below:

Introduction to your paper… Since the first paragraph or section of a document is assumed to be the introduction of the paper, the word ‘Introduction’ is not needed. Do not begin a paper with the word ‘Introduction’ as a heading (APA, 2020, p. 47). The paper’s title should be the first heading above the first body paragraph of your paper and must be bolded – Check Sample Student paper (APA, 2020, pp. 61-67)

Business Research Proposal

The Scope of the Study (full details – chapter 1-4, & 19). In the situation of a project report on some business, or industry, the scope of the study covers the upper and lower limits of the area you have studied. Business Research Proposal. The scope covers what, how, when, and where the study was done or will be done. What data were/will be taken as  inputs, what criteria were used/to be used for comparing the data, what  was/will be the outcome of the comparison, etc. a) The details of the  scope depends upon the area you have selected, the bigger the industry  the more details are in the scope. b) This scope of the study will be the basis for the business decision.

Literature Review (Comprehensive – chapter 5) A literature review is a comprehensive summary of previous research on a topic (the problem already discussed). The literature review surveys scholarly articles, books, and other sources relevant to a particular area of research. The review should enumerate, describe, summarize, objectively evaluate, and clarify this previous research/problem.

Theoretical Framework (well detailed – chapter 6) The theoretical framework in a study is based on an existing theory or theories (e.g., a theory of motivation). Theories are formulated to explain, predict, and understand phenomena and, in many cases, to challenge and extend existing knowledge within the limits of critical bounding assumptions. The theoretical framework is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a research study. The theoretical framework introduces and describes the theory that explains why the research problem under study exists. Do not develop your own conceptual framework from an existing theory because it will take you a long time to complete the project.

Business Research Proposal. Research Design (be very specific – chapters 7-17) Research design is a plan to answer your research question(s). The design of a study defines the study type (descriptive, correlation, semi-experimental, experimental, review, meta-analytic) and sub-type (e.g., descriptive-longitudinal case study), research problem,  hypotheses, independent and dependent variables, experimental design,  and, if applicable, data collection methods. Summary for Phase II and projection of Phase III. The paper must have a minimum of 5 references and in APA format.
