Discussion – Role Conflicts

Discussion Question 1

Topic: Role Conflicts

  1. Review Heltzel’s (2007) discussion about role conflicts between psychologists as therapists also acting as forensic experts.
  2. Select a side in the debate and defend your stand using supportive examples and additional research.
  3. In your conversation with peers, argue for or against other students’ reasoning.

Discussion Question 2

Topic: Prediction of Future Violence

In criminal court proceedings in which an individual has committed a crime against society, forensic psychologists may be asked to determine an individual’s competency to stand trial and his mental state, assess potential of future violence during sentencing or treatment of sex offenders, among other tasks. A debate in the forensic area is whether psychologists should be charged with assessing future violence or focused on preventing future violence by managing risk. Listen to NPR’s audio clip (2007) on predicting violence. Select a side in the debate and defend your stand using supportive examples and additional research.

Psychology – Phenomenological Research Methods. The quest to understand the lived experience and the philosophical structures of experience and consciousness is the focus of a movement that began in the early years of the 20th Century. The movement is called phenomenology because the movement explores the lived experience of phenomena. Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger were two of the prominent philosophers who developed this method of inquiry though each took a significantly different philosophical approach to understanding human experience. In this assignment, you will discuss the psychology research methods that emerged from the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger and the researchers who developed those methods.

Psychology - Phenomenological Research Methods

General Requirements:

  • This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA 7th style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral level writing. The Manual contains essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.
  • This assignment requires that at least two scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.

Directions:

Psychology – Phenomenological Research Methods. Write a paper (1,350-1,500 words) in which you discuss both the phenomenological research methods in psychology that emerged from the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger and the theorists/psychologists who developed those methods. 2. A discussion of at least two phenomenological research methods that emerged from the phenomenological philosophy of Heidegger. What were the central tenets of each method? What is known about the theorists/psychologists who developed each method?
  3. A contrast of the primary differences among the phenomenological research methods identified above. How does each method address approach to data gathering, data analysis, and the role of the researcher?
  4. A research-based statement of and rationale for the method you believe allows the best understanding of human experience. Use APA referencing style.

Exegetical Paper – Final Assignment

Overview

The Exegetical Paper: Final Assignment is important for applying what you have learned about hermeneutics to a specific passage. In this final paper you will interpret a particular passage using the method learned in this class and apply to some degree all five steps of the Interpretive Journey. This assignment will provide an opportunity for you to evaluate a particular passage while also comparing your interpretation to those of scholars. This assignment will provide an opportunity to formulate your own thoughts on your passage while also providing a practical application. You will need these skills as you attempt to interpret Scripture and explain it to others.

Instructions

You will submit a final exegetical paper on a passage of your choosing. The passage you will use should be the same as used for the Exegetical Paper: Passage and Bibliography Assignment. Using the materials from your four Exegetical Paper assignments (and the discussion on principles), you will build an exegetical paper investigating the text you chose. You may find instructions for a basic exegetical paper in Appendix 2 of the textbook Grasping God’s Word, but please use the information below as your primary guide. Submit a .doc or .docx file of your paper and be sure to include the following:

  • The exegetical paper should include an outline of the passage under consideration, a clear thesis statement, an introduction, a clear statement of the exegetical problem in the passage, some discussion of context issues (i.e., historical context, literary context, etc.), an exegesis of the passage, an overview of the place of this passage in the story of the Bible, specific and measurable application of the passage to contemporary Christian life, and a conclusion. Exegetical Paper – Final Assignment.
    • All papers should include an Introduction (with a clear thesis statement) and a Conclusion (with suggestions for further study).
  • The paper must be 2,500 – 4,250 words, e.g., 10 to 17 pages (Note: Your title page, table of contents, and bibliography are not included as part of your total word count).

Case – The Subway Family. In 1965, a young man named Fred DeLuca wanted to become a medical doctor. Looking for a way to pay for his education, a family friend – Peter Buck – advised him to open a submarine sandwich shop. With a loan of $1,000, Peter offered to become Fred’s partner. Their first submarine sandwich shop opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Soon after opening their first shop they set a goal of having 32 sandwich shops opened in 10 years. Business went well and in 1974, Fred and Peter owned and operated 16 submarine sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. However, they realized that they would not reach their goal – 32 shops – in time.

Case - The Subway Family

Therefore, they began franchising, launching the Subway brand into a period of substantial growth. Today, Subway is one of the fastest growing franchises in the world with approximately 34,695 restaurants in 98 countries as of June 2014. Franchising is the practice of using another firm’s successful business model. For Fred and Peter, franchising was an alternative to building ‘chain stores’ to distribute submarine sandwiches; they allowed others to use their business model and to run a Subway submarine sandwich shop in return for an agreed-upon fee.

Case – The Subway Family. Subway’s main operations office is in Milford, Connecticut, and five regional centers support Subway’s growing international operations. The regional office for European franchises is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Fin Green is a Senior Manager at the regional office for European franchises. Fin’s main challenge is how best to maintain control over Subway’s franchisees in Europe without excessively constraining their entrepreneurial spirit. He has asked Bart Veldkamp, a master student from Tilburg University specializing in Strategic Management, to investigate this issue. Bart has developed a conceptual model based on a paper of Strutton, Pelton, and Lumpkin (1993). The dependent variable in the model is “Satisfaction with the Franchisor”; the independent variables in the model are “Innovation”, “Pressure”, “Cohesion”, “Recognition”, “Autonomy”, and “Fairness”. To test this model Jan has created the following questionnaire.

QUESTIONS

  1. Before Bart can start analyzing the data, some preliminary steps need to be completed. Discuss these steps briefly.
  2. To get a feel for the data Bart wants to obtain some measures of central tendency and dispersion for each single item in the questionnaire.
  3. Which measures would you use to provide an overview of the items representing the dependent variable and the independent variables of Bart’s model (question 1-24)? Why?
  4. Which measures would you use to provide an overview of the sample characteristics. (question 25-28)? Why?
  5. In hindsight, Bart is not happy with the way he has measured the age of his participants and for how long they have been a franchisee. What could be the problem?
  6. Bart has made 28 pie charts to provide a visual display of the data. Fin Green has told Bart that he also would like to see histograms and box-and-whisker plots for all the items.
  7. What is a histogram?
  8. What is a box-and-whisker plot?
  9. Do you believe that it is a smart idea to provide histograms and box-and-whisker plots for all the items? Why (not)?
  10. Because the variables in Bart’s model were measured with multi-item scales, the consistency of the participants’ answers to the scale items has to be tested for each measure. Bart has decided to use Cronbach’s alpha to test the inter-item consistency of his measures. However,

before submitting the data for reliability tests Bart has to reverse the scores of some of the items in his questionnaire.

  1. What is reverse scoring and why is it necessary?
  2. Which of the items in the questionnaire have to be reverse-scored?

Case – The Subway Family. Grammatically correct paper, no typos, and must have obviously been proofread for logic. Questions must be typed out as headings, with follow up answers in paragraph format, and a summary or conclusion at the end of all answers  as in the outline (Sample provided in Course Resources). Case analysis must be in APA format.
