Assessment1 Assessing the Problem

Leadership, Collaboration, Communication, Change Management, and Policy Considerations

For this assessment, define the patient, family, or population health problem that will be the focus of your capstone project. Assess the problem from a leadership, collaboration, communication, change management, and policy perspective. Before you complete the instructions detailed in the courseroom, first select one of the following to be the problem you focus on for your capstone project:

  • Patient Health Problems

COVID-19:  A novel coronavirus that emerged in late 2019, leading to a global pandemic. COVID-19 primarily spreads through respiratory droplets and can lead to severe respiratory illness. Prevention strategies include vaccination, mask wearing, and social distancing.  Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): A condition where the force of the blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Management includes lifestyle changes and medications.

Assessment1 Assessing the Problem

Assessment1 Assessing the Problem

  • Family Health Problems

Reproductive Health: Concerns related to sexual health, family planning, fertility, pregnancy, and childbirth. Issues might include unplanned pregnancies, infertility, or sexually transmitted infections, all of which can influence family dynamics.

Family Conflict: Disagreements or disputes among family members that can stem from various sources, including financial stress, differing values, or external pressures. Prolonged conflict can erode family bonds and well-being.

  • Population Health Problems

Reproductive and Sexual Health: Concerns related to sexual well-being, family planning, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. Population-level strategies might focus on education, access to contraceptives, and safe childbirth practices.

Assessment1 Assessing the Problem

Malnutrition and Food Safety: Issues related to inadequate or excessive intake of nutrients and concerns about the safety of consumed food. This can lead to diseases, compromised immunity, and developmental issues, especially in vulnerable populations.

These health problems are significant challenges for healthcare providers and public health experts. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that includes preventive measures, early detection, and effective treatment strategies. Education and awareness campaigns, community engagement, and policy changes are also essential to improving population health outcomes. After you have selected one of the problems from the list above, return to the detailed instructions in the courseroom to complete your assessment. APA.

ENC 1101 Diagnostic Essay

Please read the article below then answer the prompt that follows it. Please remember to discuss the answer with appropriate grammar, language, descriptions, and details. Remember, this diagnostic is not graded but will be looked over carefully to ensure that you are placed in the appropriate class. Results of this essay will be discussed in a forthcoming class.

The following is an article by Ginia Bellafante on the New York Times titled “Using DNA to Fight Dog Owners’ Discourtesy in Brooklyn.” This article was published on July 30, 2015:

ENC 1101 Diagnostic Essay

On a frigid Wednesday evening in January, 40 residents of One Brooklyn Bridge Park, a condominium complex converted from an old printing factory on the Brooklyn Heights waterfront, gathered at Wag Club, a dog grooming and training service on the ground floor, to discuss an issue that had been stirring tensions in the building. Dispersed among the 440 or so apartments are about 175 dogs of varying sizes, breeds and dispositions. As it happened, some of their owners had been behaving badly.

Something had to be done, but what precisely? For some time, dog waste had been a persistent problem, especially during inhospitable weather, when people were allowing their pets to relieve themselves in stairwells and corridors.

ENC 1101 Diagnostic Essay

Because there was no “hard data” on the issue, as one memo from the building’s board of managers to residents put it, the staff had been instructed to keep a record of incidents for the month of December. During that time, the memo revealed, there were 52 reported occurrences, “a mix of diarrhea, feces, urine and vomit: found on virtually every floor including the main lobby and north and south lobbies; found in all five elevators and with the staff cleanup time ranging from 10 to 50 minutes (average time roughly 20 minutes) per incident.” What was happening wasn’t merely gross, it was also getting expensive. So in December the board decreed that all dogs in the building had to be registered and have their DNA tested, allowing stealth excrement to be matched to what we’ll euphemistically call the dogs’ wayward owners.

The condominium that has begun using DNA testing of the animals to punish owners whose pets have left waste in the building. Science was going to be the new sheriff in town because appeals to courtesy were not working.

ENC 1101 Diagnostic Essay

In the way that some conservatives worry that marriage equality will ultimately lead to people walking down the aisle with their goats or their half-sisters, some dog owners feared that DNA testing would open the gates to a new era of unstoppable oppression and tyranny. At the building meeting in January, which lasted about two hours, one woman, according to some of the residents who attended, wondered aloud whether the new testing policy would encourage nefarious conspiracy. What if someone didn’t like her, she speculated, and what if that person decided that the best way to express that distaste was by framing her with fecal evidence?

Theoretically you could get back at the person who had the last glass of punch at the Christmas party by following her as she walked her dog, retrieving the waste she deposited in the garbage and leaving it relatively close to her door.

Is forensic investigation the only effective combatant against the outsize entitlement that inevitably infects life in so many buildings in New York? When the board of managers and staff at One Brooklyn began researching DNA testing, they found a product called Poo Prints, the subsidiary of a biotech company in Tennessee. Since its introduction four years ago, more than 1,000 apartment and condominium buildings around the country have started to use it. In Italy last year, the City of Naples began a genetic-testing program to deal with dog waste, fining violators $685.

ENC 1101 Diagnostic Essay

Since enforcement of DNA testing began at One Brooklyn in May, seven matches have been made, and fines of $250 attached to each. One resident has been found in violation twice. But overall the program has proved to be a significant deterrent. “There’s a shaming aspect, no question,” Mr. Eisenstein said. “Just knowing that we’re going to find you, that the board will know who you are and that we’re not going to be sympathetic about why it happened, that’s a lot.” APA.

Essay Prompt

Please summarize the article in 1-2 paragraphs, and then respond in a paragraph whether you agree with the condominium’s decision to DNA test dogs as a preventative measure, whether you disagree with the decision, or if you have a more complex position.

Psychopathology – Mental Health Issues

Analyze and apply critical thinking skills in the psychopathology of mental health patients and provide treatment and health promotion while applying evidence-based research.

J.T.  is a 20 year-old who reports to you that he feels depressed and is experiencing a significant amount of stress about school, noting that he’ll “probably flunk out.” He spends much of his day in his dorm room playing video games and has a hard time identifying what, if anything, is enjoyable in a typical day. He rarely attends class and has avoided reaching out to his professors to try to salvage his grades this semester. J.T. has always been a self-described shy person and has had a very small and cohesive group of friends from elementary through high school. Notably, his level of stress significantly amplified when he began college.

Psychopathology - Mental Health Patients

Psychopathology – Mental Health Issues

You learn that when meeting new people, he has a hard time concentrating on the interaction because he is busy worrying about what they will think of him – he assumes they will find him “dumb,” “boring,” or a “loser.” When he loses his concentration, he stutters, is at a loss for words, and starts to sweat, which only serves to make him feel more uneasy. After the interaction, he replays the conversation over and over again, focusing on the “stupid” things he said. Similarly, he has a long-standing history of being uncomfortable with authority figures and has had a hard time raising his hand in class and approaching teachers. Since starting college, he has been isolating more, turning down invitations from his roommate to go eat or hang out, ignoring his cell phone when it rings, and habitually skipping class.

Psychopathology – Mental Health Issues

His concerns about how others view him are what drive him to engage in these avoidance behaviors.

Remember to answer these questions from your textbooks and NP guidelines.

  1. Generate a primary and differential diagnosis using the DSM-5 criteria.
  2. Develop a biopsychosocial plan of care for this client.
  3. Compare and contrast fear, worry, anxiety, and panic.

Your initial post should be at least 500 words, formatted and cited in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources.

Cardiovascular Case Study

Mr. W.G. is a 53-year-old white man who began to experience chest discomfort while playing tennis with a friend. At first, he attributed his discomfort to the heat and having had a large breakfast. Gradually, however, discomfort intensified to a crushing sensation in the sternal area and the pain seemed to spread upward into his neck and lower jaw. The nature of the pain did not seem to change with deep breathing. When Mr. G. complained of feeling nauseated and began rubbing his chest, his tennis partner was concerned that his friend was having a heart attack and called 911 on his cell phone. The patient was transported to the ED of the nearest hospital and arrived within 30 minutes of the onset of chest pain. In route to the hospital, the patient was placed on nasal cannula and an IV D5W was started. Mr. G. received aspirin (325 mg po) and 2 mg/IV morphine. He is allergic to meperidine (rash). His pain has eased slightly in the last 15 minutes but is still significant; was 9/10 in severity; now7/10. In the ED, chest pain was not relieved by 3 SL NTG tablets. He denies chills.

Cardiovascular Case Study

Case Study Questions

  1. For patients at risk of developing coronary artery disease and patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarct, describe the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.
  2. What would you expect to see on Mr. W.G. EKG and which findings described on the case are compatible with the acute coronary event?
  3. Having only the opportunity to choose one laboratory test to confirm the acute myocardial infarct, which would be the most specific laboratory test you would choose and why?
  4. How do you explain that Mr. W.G temperature has increased after his Myocardial Infarct, when that can be observed and for how long? Base your answer on the pathophysiology of the event.
  5. Explain to Mr. W.G. why he was experiencing pain during his Myocardial Infarct. Elaborate and support your answer.
