Reviewing Johari Window

The Johari window (Interesting that the name “Johari” is actually based on the creators FIRST names – psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham, back in 1955) is used to help individuals understand each other. Their window is made up of four segments:

  1. What is known to me but not to others?
  2. What is known to others but not to me?
  3. What is known to me as well as others?
  4. What neither one of us know – i.e., a collective ignorance

Reviewing Johari Window

Developing a more close-knit organizational culture, begins with co-workers bonding over various things. Many of these things have nothing to do with work, but are of common interests. The more we know about each other, the more connection points we create bonds with people of different demographics and peer groups. This helps create and foster a stronger culture. There are exercises that can help move the ignorance of what is known to that which is known. This is what we will explore with your discussion group:

For this discussion post:

Conduct a meeting with several of your co-workers, letting them know that this is for school and should not take more than 15 minutes, (this can be a Zoom meeting or in person). Give them the following instructions using this script: “To create more connection points, it is important that we share bits of ourselves so that we can see each other as more than just our job function. Reviewing Johari Window.  Who we are is as important as what we do when it comes to developing stronger bonds and better organization culture.” “For this exercise, we will go around and tell each other something that people would not guess looking at us. For example, hobbies, odd jobs, et cetera.”

Reviewing Johari Window. “I will start first (i.e. the student/you) then we will go around the group and share.” “As each member of our group shares, make note of what connects you with that person.” “Now let’s discuss how we now see each person through a different light, as more than just their job/ function is.” Post to your discussion group how this exercise has demonstrated to be effective in increasing communication, openness, and creating a stronger, more resilient culture. Use APA referencing style.

Definition Argument Essay Assignment

Goal

Write a 1,500-1,750-word essay using five to seven academic resources in which you argue that a contested “case” fits (or does not fit) within a given category. Follow the directions of your instructor as to what topics are acceptable.

Directions

Follow these steps when composing your essay:

Start by selecting a controversial or contested definitional case. Decide what category you think your case belongs in, with the understanding that others may disagree with you about the definition of your category, and/or whether your chosen case matches your category. In the opening of your essay, introduce the case you will examine and pose your definition question. Do not simply summarize here. Instead, introduce the issue and offer context. To support your argument, define the boundaries of your category (criteria) by using a commonly used definition or by developing your own extended definition. Definition Argument Essay Assignment. Defining your boundaries simply means naming the criteria by which you will discuss your chosen case. In the second part of your argument (the match), show how your case meets (or does not meet) your definition criteria. Perhaps by comparing or sizing up your controversial case to other cases can help you to develop your argument. This essay is NOT simply a persuasive essay. It is an argumentative essay where the writer explains what a term means and uses a specific case to explore the meaning of that term in depth.

Definition Argument Essay Assignment

Sources

Include in-text citations and a references page in APA Style for FIVE to SEVEN scholarly sources outside of class texts.  These sources should be used to support any claims you make and should be present in the text of the essay.  Use the GCU Library to help you find sources.   Include this research in the paper in a scholarly manner.

Body Positivity Movement. If the body positivity movement had to select its unofficial MVP, it would definitely be Lizzo. Known for her catchy songs like  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P00HMxdsVZI and  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmbmeOgWsqE this singer-songwriter, rapper, and flutist unabashedly celebrates her own body and urges fans to accept themselves, no matter their shape, size, color, gender, or sexuality. Recently, though, celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels (famous for her tenure on the reality television show The Biggest Loser) drew ire from Lizzo’s fans by expressing concern about Lizzo’s health on social media. Little did she know that she was treading on controversial ground in the body positivity movement: the intersection between size and health. Enter into this debate yourself by reading Katelyn Esmonde’s Vox article “What Jillian Michaels Got Wrong about Lizzo and Body PositivityLinks to an external site.” and answer the following questions.

Body Positivity Movement

In response to praise of Lizzo’s self-acceptance, Jillian Michaels declared, “Why are we celebrating her [Lizzo’s] body? … ‘Cause it isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes. I’m just being honest. Like, I love her music. … But there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘And I’m so glad she’s overweight!’” Do you feel that Michaels is justified in her comments? Why or why not? Also, consider Michaels’s potential authority on the topics of health and body. Do these lend more credibility to her comments on Lizzo? Why or why not? Esmonde (the author of the article) argues that “by publicly speculating about Lizzo’s susceptibility to diabetes or other chronic diseases, Michaels is doing more harm than good.” What specifically does the writer mean by this? How exactly does she see Michaels’s comments as causing harm (sometimes even literal) to fat people?

Body Positivity Movement. The author also explores scientific research that complicates our understanding of the relationship between health and weight. Explain how Esmonde argues that poor health is not always related to fatness (and vice versa), using specific examples from the text. Lastly, the author attempts to distinguish expressing concern for someone’s health and fat-shaming. What do you see as the difference between these two things? Do you believe that Jillian Michaels was legitimately worried about Lizzo’s health or was she engaging in a type of fat shaming (or even something else entirely)? Explain your reasoning. Answer the following questions in MLA format, including a title. MINIMUM of 250 words, MAXIMUM of 260 words
