Citizens Rights Part One

Overview

It is important to understand your responsibilities as a criminal justice professional when engaging with citizens. This piece is broken into three parts and you must complete each part. Each part includes a text or video scenario to which you will respond by writing 1-2 pages for each scenario that examines specific information regarding the events using your knowledge of the United States Constitution.

Instructions

Part 1: Law Enforcement Officer Arrives at the Scene Scenario

An 18-year-old high school student walks to class carrying a backpack. He is stopped by the school security guard and his backpack is searched. A loaded handgun is discovered. The school security guard takes the student to the principal’s office. The principal calls the local police. In the state where the school is located, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit and all weapons are prohibited on campus.

Citizens Rights Part One

Officer Smith arrives at the school approximately 10 minutes later. Officer Smith takes a statement from the school security guard and searches the student’s backpack. He seizes the gun and places the student under arrest. Officer Smith then asks the student if he would like to make a statement to explain why he was carrying a concealed weapon on campus.

The student replies, “What weapon? That’s not my backpack and I never saw that gun before.”

The student is then transported to the local jail. However, on the way to the local jail, Officer Smith asks the student again why he brought a loaded gun on campus. The student admits that it was his gun and stated that he needed it for protection. Upon arrival at the local jail, the student is booked. Six hours later, the student is interviewed by a Detective Columbo. The detective reads the student his Miranda warning and asks the student if he would like to make a statement.

The student replies, “No, I want a lawyer.”

Citizens Rights Part One

Write 1-2 pages in which you:

Examine the constitutional amendment or amendments that would relate to this situation. Outline the appropriate procedures you would need to follow to comply with the associated amendments to ensure admissibility of evidence. Evaluate the officer’s actions and determine whether his search, the student’s confession, and the weapon discovery were lawful and/or admissible. Provide a rationale for your opinion.

Use at least two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time. Consider using Cornell Law’s LII U.S. ConstitutionLinks to an external site. (https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/index.html). Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as academic resources. Use APA referencing style.

Parole – Plan of Action. Details of the Program You are Designing. You are to design a program to prepare a group of 20 incarcerated men OR women to be released back into society. It cannot be a program for both men and women—select one or the other. You will design and present your program as a power point presentation (PPP).

These inmates have been incarcerated for between 10 and 15 years and are to be released on parole; that is, if they are not successful in their release, they will be returning to prison. Keep in mind that they were model prisoners, participated in the prison work programs and completed all rehabilitation and skills programs that they were allowed to complete. Think about what society was like for them before they were incarcerated and what might have changed. Parole – Plan of Action. Think about how fast technology has changed. How are you going to prepare them during the last six months of their incarceration? You can determine how long the training program will last; from 2 weeks to 6 months. This is one time where you will submit your power point presentation as an attachment in the Discussion area.

Parole – Plan of Action

Parole – Plan of Action. I want you to come up with an innovative plan of action. However, your goal is to “sell” your plan to your classmates. Your classmates serve as the committee who is funding the program and will release $500,000 to each of the best 3 presentations. (Disclaimer: You will not actually receive the funds, this is an exercise for this class only.) Keep the presentation simple as you address these points.

Guidelines for the Power Point Presentation

  1. Put the title of the program and names of those who worked on the power point presentation on the first slide. Don’t forget the names!
  2. List the goals of your program. Remember, use action words. Here’s an APA document to writing goals or objectives: Writing Behavioral Learning Objectives and AssessmentsLinks to an external site.
  3. Specifically list what you would put into your training and preparation program.
  4. Explain how you would carry out the training.
  5. Present a one-page budget of how the $500,000 funds will be allocated. For example, would you need a manager to oversee the program, would you hire outside specialists, would you purchase educational material, or how would you spend the money.
  6. Keep the power point within 6-10 slides. Do not go over 10 slides. Be concise.

Workplace Legal & ethical standards

Accurate documentation and record keeping are vital to the profession. Documenting that the research subject (client/patient) has read and understood both 1) informed consent to research participation (treatment), and 2) the legal ramifications of mandated instances in which treatment-related information must be released are ethically imperative. In the workplace, it is critical to apply due diligence by continually monitoring, reviewing, and investigating current practices performed, to confirm that they adhere to the APA code of ethics and standards of the profession.

Workplace Legal & ethical standards

  • Analyze the ethical issues related to documenting informed consent and ethical release of treatment and assessment records.
  • Which enforceable standards are relevant to the release of treatment-related materials and disclosure of information arising out of treatment?
  • Provide specific examples of what each enforceable standard requires or prohibits.
  • Provide a rationale for your proposed actions in your example and why they are consistent with ethical guidelines.
  • Evaluate the legal issues associated with assessment, testing, and diagnosis documentation in professional psychology.
  • What specific legal issues can arise in documenting assessment, testing, and diagnosis?
  • Provide specific examples that support your evaluation.
  • Provide a rationale for your proposed actions in your example and why they are consistent with legal requirements.

Safety Training Program

SAFETY FIRST: CASE STUDY

BNSF Railway is a North American freight transportation company with over 32,000 miles of routes. BNSF Railway hauls agricultural, consumer, and industrial products and coal. BNSF Railway puts safety above everything else it does, including productivity. BNSF Railway recognizes that safety is based on having well-trained employees who share BNSF Railway’s vision for an injury- and accident-free workplace and who are willing to look out for one another. Thanks to its employees’ commitment, a carefully maintained network and equipment, and well-prepared communities, BNSF Railway is a safety leader in the rail industry.

Safety Training Program

Approaching Others About Safety (AOAS) is a training program for all BNSF Railway employees. Four hundred and fifty BNSF Railway employees train their peers. Employees serve as trainers because page 200BNSF Railway believes they are in the best position to keep themselves and their peers safe.

The goal of the program is for BNSF Railway employees to be confident about giving feedback to each other about safe behavior and avoiding unsafe situations. Employees need to learn the value of providing feedback when they see unsafe behavior or situations, including positively recognizing when someone is working safely or correcting them when they perceive another employee is at risk. Training should focus on the types of exposures that tend to result in the most injuries, including walking/path of travel around trains, rails, and equipment, pinch points between the railway cars, and climbing or descending locomotives and railway cars.

Safety Training Program. Describe the different types of instructional characteristics that this program should have for learning and transfer to occur and for a decrease in injuries and accidents to result. Would these characteristics vary depending on who was attending the program (e.g., managers, train crew, employees who maintain track, structures, or signals)? If so, how would they vary? Explain how a community of practice (COP) could be beneficial for this program.

Behavior

Overview

Before researching a behavior, it is important to first identify and define it. All experiments must have a behavior (dependent variable), at least one participant, and a setting where they take place. For this assignment, you will start writing the Introduction and the Methods section of your hypothetical behavior analytic study. Consider an area of research that interests you. Then, select a specific action, population, and setting for your hypothetical study.

Instructions

Complete the following sections of your hypothetical behavior analytic study. Use the Hypothetical Behavior Analytic Study Template [DOCX] to complete this assignment. For each assignment you will add new sections.

Behavior

Introduction

Select and operationally define a dependent variable (action). Your operational definition should be brief (1¿2 sentences), objective, clear, and complete.

  • Objective refers to unambiguous description of the actions; void of mentalistic words. An operational definition that meets the objective criteria is one that is observable and measurable.
  • Clear refers to what a person says or does; the topography is clearly defined in such a manner that two observers will have a high agreement when the behavior is observed.
  • Complete refers to the boundaries of what is included and excluded. To discriminate the boundaries of the operational definition, include examples and nonexamples with minimal differences.

For more information about writing an operational definition, review the following information in your Applied Behavior Analysis text.

  • Hawkins and Dobes’s three characteristics (top of page 70).
  • Morris’s three criteria for testing a definition (page 70).

Discuss the social significance of the actions and why your research should address it.

Methods: Participants and Setting

Identify the participants that were targeted in the hypothetical study (diagnosis, age, other important information) and the setting where the study took place. This will be the start of the methods section (participants and setting).

Additional Requirements, Behavior

Your assignment should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Writing is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: References and citations are formatted according to current APA style guidelines. Review Evidence and APA Links to an external site. For more information on how to cite your sources.
  • Resources: A sufficient number of scholarly or professional resources.
  • Length: 2–3 double-spaced pages, not including the title page or reference page.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 points.

Competencies Measured, Behavior

By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Apply techniques of behavioral measurement and data display.
    • Select and operationally define an appropriate action for a hypothetical behavior analytic study.
    • Explain the social significance of the behavior chosen.
    • Describe the participants and setting used in the hypothetical study.
  • Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology.
    • Demonstrate an academic writing style through well-organized prose that follows assignment guidelines.
    • Demonstrate compliance with current APA style, citation, and referencing guidelines. Use APA referencing style.

Country Report 2.

The starting point for this assignment is your first country report. This time, choose a product or service that you might sell there. The choice of product will not be graded (there are no wrong options) so choose one that is interesting or easy to talk about for you.

Country report 2.

Start your report with a sentence of the type “I want to sell (your product choice) in (country).” This is meant to keep you focused on information that is relevant for that product category. You will redo your old country report in light of your newly acquired knowledge about culture and your choice of product. This will mostly mean adding new information and using the right terms and concepts to discuss culture. It may require that you delete old information if you feel it doesn’t belong in your new country report.

Think the type of actionable, relevant information that a manager would want if they knew nothing at all about the country and tasked you with putting them up to speed. It should be a short (approx. 3-4 single-spaced pages) bullet-point report of facts, two or three visuals are acceptable if relevant. Country Report.

This time you are expected to use your knowledge of international marketing, in particular the lessons in the recent modules, to craft the report. Make sure to update your PEST Analysis based on any changes or new information. At the end of the report, add an OT (Opportunities-Threats) table based on the updated PEST. The submission must also include references, cited at the end of the write-up.

Country Report 2. The challenge of this assignment is in summarizing an entire human community and reducing it to a considerably short list of sentences, numbers and visuals. You will be graded on how well you summarize a culture through a sound and validated set of dimensions such as the ones learned in this course. Use APA referencing style.
