ECHD 303 Lesson Plan

For this activity, you will write a lesson plan for a group activity, or for an activity with more than one station, which teaches at least one locomotion skill.

  1. Look at all slides, web pages, and videos for the week.

NOTES TO HELP WITH ASSIGNMENT

Teaching Fundamental Movement and Movement Awareness Concepts Fundamental Movement Skills help children develop the use of their muscles and can be divided into three groups: Locomotion Skills – ways of moving the body from one place to another. Stability Skills – moving parts of the body while remaining stable. Object Control Skills – moving to manipulate an object. When teaching movement skills you may choose to focus on one skill the children need to work on. However, you can also focus on more than one skill at a time. For example, you could create an activity where the children hop across the floor (locomotion skill), bend to pick up a bean bag (stability skill) then throw the bean bag (object control skill) across a tape line. Movement Awareness Concepts help children learn to control their movements.

ECHD 303 Lesson Plan

ECHD 303 Lesson Plan

These skills can also be divided into three major groups and multiple skills can be practiced in one activity. Effort Awareness – controlling the timing, the force, and the flow of their movements. Space Awareness – controlling the space, the directions, the levels, and the pathways of their movements. Body Awareness – controlling the parts of their body, moving alone or with others, in various locations, through various roles. For example, the activity described above could also focus on hopping forward (direction) at a sustained (force) medium speed (time), with a group (role). Then throw the bean bag straight (pathway) with their arms and hands (body parts). An observant teacher will note which locomotion skills and which movement awareness skills each child has mastered and which could use more practice. *END OF NOTES*

ECHD 303 Lesson Plan

  1. Review the Sample Lesson Plan with notes on the previous page to see the format and how a lesson plan can be written.
  2. Print the Fundamental Movement Skills and Movement Awareness Concepts tables.
  3. Select at least one Locomotion skill to design a lesson around. Also, select Awareness Concepts.

5.Open the Lesson Plan Template for Physical Activities and fill in the information to describe a developmentally appropriate physical activity lesson. You may describe a learning idea of your own or modify an idea you have seen somewhere else. APA.

The Business of Art

The Business of Art

INTRODUCTION: ART, FEDERAL FUNDING AND PHILANTHROPY: 1920S/1930S

The recent recession and an economic downturn due to the pandemic have prompted employees of various professions, including the arts, to take to the streets. Thus studying support for the arts in the Great Depression era is especially interesting, as both governmental and private sponsorship was crucial at a time of hardship. However, both, government agencies and wealthy philanthropists had their own agendas and put their “ideological stamp” on artworks produced, or even censored them.

KEY TERMS

Federal Funding: Federal funds are all monies received directly from the federal government, the expenditure of which is administered through or under the direction of any agency/department.

Philanthropy: generally refers to the goodwill to one’s fellow people, as well as to the active effort to promote the welfare of people. In modern use it refers specifically to the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for others. A person who practices philanthropy is called a philanthropist.

The Business of Art

PART I: ART AND FEDERAL FUNDING IN THE UNITED STATES, 1920S/1930S

The Works Progress Administration (WPA), renamed Work Projects Administration in 1939, was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of people – men, women, and youth – to carry out public works projects. It was set up by presidential order in 1935, as a key part of the second stage of the New Deal programs of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The WPA became the most famous, because it affected so many people’s lives. At its peak, it supplied paid jobs for 3 million unemployed men, women, and youth. Sub-projects were the Federal Writers’ Project, the Federal Music Project and the Federal Art Project (FAP). [See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_New_Deal]

YOUR TASKS FOR PART I

Read: -Alissa Wilkinson: “Artists helped lift America out of the Great Depression. Could that happen again?”(2020): https://www.vox.com/culture/21294431/new-deal-wpa-federal-art-project-coronavirus

Please answer the following questions in about 4-6 sentences each:

The Business of Art

Summarize the main points of Wilkinson’s text.

Explain the role the Federal Art Project, part of the WPA, played for visual artists during the Great Depression and beyond, according to Wilkinson’s text.

After reading Wilkinson’s text, what is your opinion: Should visual artists be supported by the government and can artists help lift up society in times of economic crisis? Explain your opinion.

PART II: MODERN PHILANTHROPY AND THE CASE OF ARTIST DIEGO RIVERA

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a famous Mexican Muralist, one of the Los Tres Grandes with David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco. Rivera was a member of the Mexican communist party and married the much younger painter, Frida Kahlo, as his third wife, who came to international fame in her own right posthumously. After the Mexican Revolution (1910-20), Rivera was commissioned by the Mexican government to paint murals on several public buildings such as the Ministry of Education and the National Palace in the center of Mexico City. After being expelled from the communist party for working for the Mexican government, Rivera took on public and private commissions in various US cities, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City.

The Business of Art

During his time in the US, accompanied by Kahlo, Rivera found himself again in the crossfire of politics and opposing world views, at odds with both, his left-wing peers and his wealthy patrons.

Edsel Ford (1893-1943) was an American business executive and philanthropist who was the only child of industrialist Henry Ford and Clara Jane Bryant Ford. He was the president of the Ford Motor Company from 1919 until his death in 1943. Ford was one of the most significant art benefactors in Detroit history. As President of the Detroit Arts Commission, he commissioned Diego Rivera to paint the Detroit Industry Murals in the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in 1932.

Nelson Rockefeller (1908-1979) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and politician who served as the 41st vice president (1974-1977 and 49th governor of New York (1959-1973). He was a grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller and a noted art collector, who was crucial in the planning of the new Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York City, in the early 1930s.

The Business of Art

A controversy was caused when Rockefeller commissioned Diego Rivera to paint a large-scale mural for the lobby of the new Rockefeller Center center with the title, Man at the Crossroads in 1933.

All MUST answer 1):

The Business of Art

In a paragraph, please summarize the video, The Frescoes of Diego Rivera, focusing on Rivera’s relationship to his public (Mexican and US government) and private (Ford and Rockefeller) patrons.

Select and answer only EITHER 2) OR 3):

What interest prompted Rivera to accept Edsel Ford’s commission to paint a cycle of 27 panels, Detroit Industries, at the Detroit Institute of Arts (1932/33), depicting the Ford Motor Company? How did Ford’s company directly influence Rivera’s mural designs? Please explain with an example. How was celebrating the auto industry during the Great Depression at odds with his communist ideals?

Briefly explain the controversy that ensued when Rivera painted his mural, Man at the Crossroads, commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller for the lobby of the new Rockefeller Center in New York City. What provoked Rockefeller to dismiss Rivera before the mural was finished and have it destroyed? Why did Rivera defend his original design rather than change it and bow to his patron’s wish?

Where did Rivera eventually repaint the mural under the new title, Man, Controller of the Universe?

Analyzing Sears/Wal-Mart case

Sears, Roebuck and Co. vs. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

The Sears/Wal-Mart case is a good opportunity for you to dive into financial statements and begin looking closely at corporations. Put yourself in the shoes of Don Edwards, who we learn is a newly hired analyst at a big investment bank. His assignment, as is yours in this case, is to compare Sears and Wal-Mart using the materials that are included with the case study. The topics we will have covered in class will prepare you to effectively evaluate these companies.

My role in this exercise is as your supervisor at the investment bank. I will be reviewing your case write- up as a supervisor might review an analysis you’ve prepared for your job. Ultimately, for this assignment you will be evaluated based on how well you respond to the questions below as well as the thoughtfulness of your overall analysis of the case.

Analyzing Sears/Wal-Mart case

Analyzing Sears/Wal-Mart case

Please address the questions/considerations below in your write-up of the Sears/Wal-Mart case study.

  1. How are the retailing strategies for Sears and Wal-Mart similar? How are they different? Be sure to also look at their financial statements when addressing this question, noting anything that might stand out.
  2. You are told in the case introduction that Don Edwards conducted an ROE analysis and found that Sears’ ROE (22%) was greater than Wal-Mart’s (20%). How might Don/you probe deeper into the companies’ ROE results using any of the financial statement analysis tools from Chapter 4 of the textbook?
  3. For any/all financial analyses you conduct in evaluating the companies, you should be prepared to explain why you choose to perform the particular analysis, what the results of the analysis suggest, and what limitations there might be in using the analysis. Remember, you are writing this to assist Don’s/your supervisor (that’s me!) in determining whether the firm should recommend a buy or sell for the companies.
  4. When you perform the analysis/analyses, be sure to show your math so I can follow how you arrived at your result(s). For instance, if you were to use the Current Ratio in your analysis, and let’s say that current assets = $120 and current liabilities = $100, I would expect you to write your results as follows in the text of your assignment: “The Current Ratio is 1.2 ($120/$100).”

Analyzing Sears/Wal-Mart case

Additionally, I am expecting you to structure your case study assignment with the following sections:

  • Introduction/Background: Introduce the case and provide brief background details to help setup your analysis. This is also a good time to tell your reader how you plan to
  • Analysis: Provide data or other analysis to arrive at an informed recommendation or recommendations.
  • Recommendation(s): Provide the reader with your recommendation(s) based on your well- reasoned analysis from the prior section. Be sure that your recommendation(s) is/are supported by your Analysis section.

Your case study assignment must be formatted using standard font sizing (11), margin sizing (1 inch), and line spacing (not more than double spaced). Assignment length is 5-7 pages. APA.

Accounting Projection NPV Assignment

You will use the information completed in Case Study: Projections, NPV, Compilation Assignment final document.

Your Case Study: Projections, NPV, Compilation Assignment paper must include

  1. Executive Summary – this should be no more than one page and provide the reader with an overview of what will be contained in the following pages. The problem and strategic solution being recommended should be in this summary. Details for the choice and implementation and data to support the decision should be contained in the following sections.
  2. Alternative strategies (giving advantages and disadvantages for each). There should be at least two alternative strategies identified and discussed.

Projected Financial Statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Statement of Cash Flows) for 3 years into the future. This must be broken down by year into two (2) columns: 1 column without your strategy and 1 column with your strategy. The without column should serve as the basis for your with strategy column and only those financial statement accounts that will be changed, based on your strategy, should be impacted.

Accounting Projection NPV Assignment

Accounting Projection NPV Assignment

  1. Include Projected ratios for the without and with strategy by year. Discuss how these ratios compare and contrast with the historical findings.
  2. Cost Analysis completed on an Excel tab that outlines the cost that will be incurred to implement the strategy. This information should correspond with the With Strategy on the Projected Financial Statements, linking of cells to the financial statements is encouraged.
  3. Net Present Value analysis of proposed strategy’s new cash flow – you may also use Excel to solve for this. From the income statement the change in operating income between your with and without strategy should serve as your cash inflow for each year.

NOTE: To construct the first cash flow (cf1) the new revenue from your strategy(s) must be discounted back to the present value by calculating EBIT (Operating Income on the Income Statement) and that figure will be your cfn for each year. cf0 (initial cost of your strategy), cf1 (discounted cash flow first year), r (opportunity cost of capital, the rate of the next best alternative use of cash/debt/equity resources).

Accounting Projection NPV Assignment

  1. Implementation strategy – how and when will the strategy be implemented, this should outline the who, how, what, and when of the implementation process.
  2. Specific recommended strategy and long-term objectives. Explain why you chose the strategy, discuss the advantages/benefits to organizational success and sustainability. Include a discussion of the challenges or disadvantages that may arise as a result of the strategic choice.
  3. Text must follow this order with current APA level headings for each component. Place the results of the case study analysis in a Word document include matrices as appendices and a reference page. Submit a separate Excel document for your Historical financials, Projections, NPV, and Cost of the strategy. Use APA referencing style.

Scientific Literacy Essay

Task 2: The Essay
Scientific writing can be quite different from other writing formats that you may have experienced in other non-science or social science classes. In this assignment, you are going to utilize the research on an environmental issue in scientific literature from Task 1 and synthesize that research into a mini-review essay (1200-1500 words).
Learning objectives:
 Effectively research the existing scientific literature
 Convey detailed information about an environmental topic to a non-expert
 Synthesize the current primary academic research and identify key information gaps

 Integrate at least 3 topics from this course (ex. Topic/ Environmental issue:
Elephant extinction. Topics: evolution, climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems of the world)

Scientific Literacy Essay

Scientific Literacy Essay

Your essay should include but is not limited to:
1. Name of the environmental issue
2. Source/ cause of the issue
3. What is the cause of environmental change
4. How to minimize the issue/change
5. Future developments
6. A clear statement of which topics from this course you have integrated

Scientific Literacy Essay

Task 3: Response to Reviewer
Scientific literature is created through a process of peer-review, where colleagues and peers review work to suggest and make changes. One of the most important aspects of effective feedback is that it “feeds forward” on to further assignments. In this case, you will be using the feedback from your peers to update your essay.
In scientific literature, reviewers write a summary about their thoughts on the essay (“The reviewer’s comments”) and based on those comments you are asked to revise a rough draft of your essay before you submit it for grading.
You will have an opportunity to use the peer feedback given and update your essay before submitting it for grading. During this time you can expand the text of your essay to accommodate your updates and changes (for a maximum of 1500 words total). Importantly, this gives you an opportunity to reflect upon and respond to feedback
you’ve been given on your assignment and improve the final copy before you submit. Your Response to the Reviewer task will be graded on how well you give feedback using the feedback form, respond to the feedback, and update your rough draft. A feedback form will be provided as part of your reviewer task. Use APA referencing style.

Scientific Literacy and Communication

This assignment consists of three tasks. Each writing task in this assignment connects together in succession to help you gradually build your scientific writing skills from initial research to final revision. Your main goal with these assignment tasks is to create a thorough and thoughtful review of a pressing environmental issue by using the most up-to-date/recent publications in scientific literature.

Your task for this assignment is to research an environmental issue of your choice. There are many issues that cause damage to the environment. The following list is a small selection of these issues. Some examples include:
 Global warming
 Climate change
 Increasing population
 Animal extinction
 Ozone layer depletion
 Deforestation
 Pollution (air/ water/ soil)
 Plastic garbage
 Drinking water and sanitation
 Issues affecting the food industry and agriculture

Scientific Literacy and Communication

Scientific Literacy and Communication

You may choose an environmental issue of your choice. You may also select an environmental issue that is not currently on this list. However, make sure that the issue you choose to research has sufficient recent publications before you proceed with your assignment. If you are unsure if the environmental issue you would like to research is
appropriate, please reach out to your instructor.

Task 1: Annotated Bibliography (5%)
The first step to completing a review on a topic is to conduct thorough background research. In an annotated bibliography, you are expected to give a short outline (150 – 200 words) of the identified paper/research. You must include a minimum of five (5) primary academic sources. Your summary should include at least one piece of
information that clearly shows how the article contributes to the point you are trying to make in your final paper (Note: no more than 250 words per source). During this task you will choose one Environmental issue to explore in greater depth. You will then develop an annotated bibliography containing five (5) primary academic
sources and a thesis or topic idea. You may choose to use the template provided or use one of your own formatting.
Your annotated bibliography must use APA 7th Edition and the appropriate uses of formatting and citing.

Scientific Literacy and Communication

What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to sources (books, articles, films, websites, etc.) that you’ve used when researching a topic. An annotated bibliography includes a summary and evaluation of each source usually between 150-200 words. These annotations are written in paragraph form and for the purposes of this class
should include the following information:
1. An explanation of the main purpose of the source
2. A short summary of key findings or arguments of the source
3. The academic/intellectual credentials of the source. Does it appear in peer-reviewed
journals? Is the author someone who has expertise in the area?
4. Are there any shortcomings or biases?
5. The value of this work as a contribution to the topic you’re exploring.

Global Entrepreneurship & New Venture

Task:
In developing a new business venture, the process begins with recognising an opportunity from a business problem and creating a business concept that articulates it. For the first steps, the entrepreneur (1) builds a concept to solve the business challenge; (2) presents a story that conveys the meaning of the new venture, and (3) and be able to explain the concept to potential customers, investors and partners. After testing the concept with stakeholders, the entrepreneur may go on to develop a complete business plan. To help you build these skills you will be required to undertake the entrepreneurial process of opportunity recognition and concept development. You will be asked to identify possible commercial opportunities for an innovation and then articulate the opportunities into a
100% NEW business concept. You will submit a 2,800 – 3,000 words business concept report that identifies and describes your innovative business idea. You must research and select one of the cities/ countries from the list for your targeted market: France, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa, Dubai, Japan, Malaysia,
Vietnam, Taiwan and Singapore.

Global Entrepreneurship & New Venture

Global Entrepreneurship & New Venture

Some of the issues that will help you in developing and evaluating your business idea are:
1. the problem or need and identification of the customers and market
2. the proposed solution and the uniqueness of the solution
3. why the customer will pay for the solution
4. feasibility, marketing, finance, and operational issues
Report:
In your business concept report you should:
• Identify the problem and recognise a business opportunity to solve it.
• Assess the business opportunity (undertake a feasibility analysis).
• Identify and explain the business model/strategy, based on the assessment of the
business opportunity.
References: Chapter 3 Creativity and Innovation, Chapter 4 Feasibility Analysis and
Chapter 5 Strategic Plan

Global Entrepreneurship & New Venture

Your business concept report may be structured around all three elements above or you can devise your own approach. See below for a suggested approach:
1. The business opportunity: The problem and solution (Identify the ‘problem’ and discuss the business opportunity that may address it, showing an understanding of the particular market and potential customers.)
2. Business opportunity assessment
(This is your feasibility analysis. In this section, assess the feasibility of the business idea in relation to the following: industry/market, product/service, and the organization and its management.)
3. Business model/strategy
(Based on your assessment of the business opportunity, explain the business model/strategy that you will use to realize the opportunity.)
Here are some questions to help GUIDE you in developing your business concept (and later when expanding it into a full business plan for the final group project in week 11).

Global Entrepreneurship & New Venture

• What are the key factors in determining if your idea is a viable business opportunity? Is this just an idea or a real business opportunity? Can the new product or service work?
• What contextual (economic, regulatory, industry) factors should you be aware of? What markets and market drivers should you focus on? What are the specific competitive advantages will the product or service offer? Who are the customers likely to be?
• Who would make up the team? In your opinion, what is the greatest risk? Why and how should this risk be mitigated? What resources you will need? Who is going to finance it?
• What would be the business strategy? Briefly describe your business strategy. What partners and alliances (important stakeholders) will you need in order to be successful in production, distribution, marketing, and overall? What distribution channels will be used?
Please note you must ensure that to correctly cite any information you use from other sources and provide a reference list at the end of your report. There is no requirement for minimum number of the sources that you should use but you should utilise correct referencing techniques and do not plagiarise (use the APA Intext Citations
and Referencing System). If you fail to provide appropriate referencing, students will be penalised.

Child & YouthCare – Literature Review

Your submission will be submitted on e.centennial and will include:

  1. APA title page and APA formatted paper (this means using paragraphs, citations, a title page and a reference page)
    1. you will complete the Writing Expectations Checklist before you submit your paper, *you will not have access to the assignment folder unless you have completed this checklist*
  2. Research regarding a children’s rights issue or advocacy issue
    1. you will write four full pages, not exceeding six pages of content about your topic
  3. You will have at least four APA formatted references
    1. your references will be peer reviewed journal articles from the last 10 years only

Writing a literature review is a big undertaking. This paper is a full four pages, so do remember that you have to write quite a bit, but if you pick your topic well, this should be quite easy to do.

Child & YouthCare - Literature Review

Child & YouthCare – Literature Review

You should start by identifying an issue that you feel passionate about. Look at the topical outline for some ideas, the sky is the limit here folks!

I know this “pick your own adventure” can be stressful for people. So some ideas are included here *Please Note: I have attached Googled articles that you can all access but when completing this paper you MUST use literature, this means peer reviewed journal articles

  1. Human Trafficking in Indigenous Youth Populations in Ontario (idea article )
  2. The Emotional Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Youth in Canada (article )
  3. Transracial Care Systems and the impact on Black Youth (idea article )
  4. Links between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and Wellbeing Outcomes in Youth in Ontario (idea article )
  5. Education Crisis in Attawapiskat (article ) – so many themes you could pull out here, but I would just focus on this community not Indigenous communities broadly. So, you can do the Education issues (Shannens Dream  came out of this) you can also do the suicide crisis, water crisis, housing crisis (but obviously tie it back to youth).
  6. The School to Prison Pipeline in Canada (idea article)
  7. Impacts of Ableism on the Health and Wellbeing of Disabled Young People (article )
  8. Barriers to youth Accessing Mental Health Services/could also focus on Migrant Youth (article ) /or specify for Black Youth (article ) – could also discuss cultural stigma

You will need to read more than four articles so that you can find four to pick that are most relevant to your topic. If you want to use more than four you are welcome to.

Child & YouthCare – Literature Review

Your paper should work to explore the topic you’ve selected by presenting literature that you have found that relates to your issue. For example, if you selected homeless youth, you might want to research the barriers that impact females who identify as homeless such as education, health care, employment, addiction, mental health, etc. Let the research guide you! Ensure you have in-text citations and have followed APA throughout your paper. A paper without in text citations, a title page, or a reference page will not be accepted. You must complete the checklist for APA formatting before submitting this assignment.

The only rules for the topic selection of your assignment are:

A) It must be about children and youth

B) You cannot write about child abuse of any kind

C) Please include issues particular to Canada
